To whoever reads this or finds this,
It’s my 18th birthday and I just received my acceptance into the Naval Academy. It’s something that I've always dreamed about- even if said dreams were shot down. My father wanted me to work in that old cannery with him, but I know there’s more and better things out there than just that. Besides, he’s just drunk half the time, no wonder Mama ran off when she did. Wish she’d have taken me with her. These swamps are draining for a boy like me, best that I try to disengage the accent as soon as I can. Can't have people up north thinking I'm stupid or anything. Dad doesn’t know i even applied to get out of here- i have no clue how I’m going to pay for all this. I could steal some of his copper and scrap it, he wouldn’t notice i bet. He was going to sell it for scrap anyways, Annapolis is a far way away, but I’m never coming back here. I’m never coming back to the swamps. He can see me as a failure all he wants but I only see failure on his end. I'll find a way out of here even if i must fight like hell to find it.
