A Bouquet For You
“Hold on, you crazy dork!!!” Keith’s voice as loud as it was could barely go over Lance’s excited cries.
“No way! And don’t you dare slow down Mullet! This is exhilarating!” Lance was giggling as all hell while the tandem bike rushed through the small streets of the quiet town.
No way did he want this to stop. No. This was the last day of their last summer… As dramatic as that sounded even from the king of drama himself, Lance was not kidding himself. The chances of them seeing each other again after they went off to college, especially since they were each going to the opposite ends of the world, were slim to none. He knew how those things worked, had seen it too many times before and not only in his beloved romcoms but also with his older siblings and their many friends. He was pretty sure that the lazy days in their beloved flower fields were slowly passing into the realms of fond memories…
So even as Keith sped down ‘breakneck’ hill, Lance threw his long legs to the sides of the bike, squished the gorgeous enormous bouquet of soft pink, lilac and baby-blue hued hydrangeas between them and screamed with excitement at the top of his lungs. He was going to make the most of it. He was going to make this day unforgettable for both his and Keith’s sake. Make sure that those moments were ingrained in their memories as a permanent bond between them no matter what. Even if… No matter what…

Then something snapped. No, it wasn’t a twig or one of the bike’s spokes. No… It was one of those moments when all the stars align, the universe opens her ear, the seconds get filled with magic and time simply stops. Those are the moments that you gotta seize as they are rarely given. Lance’s eyes were wide open, he wouldn’t let the moment pass. He uttered a quick prayer, leaned into Keith’s back, placing his head sideways on that strong shoulder and whispered in his ear, “I love you with all my soul, you stupid mullet…”
Time stilled. Keith stilled on the tandem. Thank the ancients for forward momentum or they would be remembering this for a whole different set of reasons. The long-haired teen felt like moving through an animated scene. The whirlwind of lilac, blue and pink petals surrounding them, the smell of slowly approaching autumn in the air, the gentle press of those plush lips on his neck, coupled with the tears running down his face at the sound of something he wouldn’t even let himself dare imagine…

And if Keith then moved Heaven and Earth to change majors, universities, plans, everything, to meet Lance in front of the Madrid Uni campus 6 months later with a smile and a giant bouquet of lilac, pink and baby blues, no one had to know…
He didn’t even tell Lance…
Not before their silver wedding anniversary, that is…
