Work Text:
三日月 and 太陽 have been friends since they were in diapers. Both of them grew up side by side, and yet their life differ from each other so much. Taiyō grew up in a loving and warm family, with parents who adore and older siblings who take care of her. Meanwhile, Mikatsuki grew up in a peaceful but empty household. Mikatsuki's parents weren't around as much, but when they were...the house becomes suffocating.
Instead of asking her how she's been doing or at least showing interest in her hobbies, they ask her if she's been getting high grades in her classes. Her mother is especially the most overbearing person Mikatsuki has ever met. Her mother made her do a certain exercise, and she can only stop once she fully understands the subject she's being taught. To say she had a miserable life was an understatement, as if her overbearing mother wasn't enough, her uncaring father was the worst. Mikatsuki has done everything she can possibly thought of; win every single competition, become the top student every single time, get the highest position there is in anything she had joined and yet none of these seemed enough for him to just give a single sentence of " I'm proud of you."
She really can't understand them. Just how she can't understand why Taiyō is stuck around her. If anything, Mikatsuki would like Taiyō to leave her and find other people to stick around and actually be happy. She knows Taiyō is only here because of the kindness that seems to be a genetic trait throughout her entire family. Mikatsuki really cannot fathom how someone like her could ever stay for such a long time around someone like herself.
Taiyō has fallen in love with Mikatsuki since the day they exchanged names. She has been staying by side her all this time, just to find out the tiniest detail she can find. Mika was the only person she had eyes on. She simply can't be composed to the boys around her. Her perfections and imperfections are what Taiyō loves the most.
Taiyō just wishes that Mika can see her through the same lens as she does because it will make her already bright life brighter. Life is unfair, Taiyō wanted Mika in her life more than her own friends that she genuinely likes hanging around. Having Mika would complete Taiyō's life.
Which is why, Taiyō will finally tell Mika her true feelings. Tell her everything that she's been wanting to tell ever since they were little kids.
"Mika, I have something to tell you." Said Taiyō. Mika turns her head and stares right into Taiyō's soul. Ah. She can feel her cheeks heating with the way Mika looks at her. To have her undivided attention is a blissful feeling. Mika doesn't respond. She only looks at her silently. Taiyō continues on what she wanted to say: "For the longest time, whenever I look into your eyes, I feel myself falling in love once again. You are the sun I want to orbit around. You are the moon -" "Stop it." Taiyō's eyes widened." What?" Ah. 'Mika's eyes, have they always looked so...cold? ' Mikatsuki breathed out a sigh. "Taiyō...how can you say you love me? You, of all people, should know I am incapable of feeling or giving love." Taiyō's eyes took the form of crescents, her breathing shaking, eyes glossing. "Y-you don't know that! It's not too late for you to learn! I-I can show you!" Mikatsuki wore an expression that she had never seen before. An expression of contempt.
"Taiyō, I've made clear in the past before. I don't want an intimate relationship with anyone. Even you." If Taiyō wasn't crying before, she's definitely crying now. "Then why did you even stick around me! Why didn't you just cut our friendship off sooner? " Mika hearing this, got agitated."You think I didn't try doing that? Who was the one that kept coming to me every time I wanted to be alone? Who was the one who kept forcing me to go out with her friends? Knowing damn well, none of them likes me?" Taiyō face had realisation run across it.
"Let me ask you a question that I want you to think for yourself. Do you love me for who I am? Or do you love the idea of being with me? Because every time I tried to do something of my own interest, you always shut me down. Every time I became closer to someone other than you, you became overly jealous." Mikatsuki took in a deep breath." Maybe I am also in the wrong, too. I knew I should've just tried harder to cut you off, but I didn't because I did truly see you as a friend. Well, before you became like this, at least."
Taiyō couldn't say anything. She was left speechless. What could she say? Mika's words were right, and it cut deeply into her heart. Taiyō could only wish for one thing. "We can still be friends, right?" Taiyō had some hope left, but after seeing that sorrowful gaze that Mika sent her, her hope began to diminish. "I'm sorry Taiyō, I don't think it's healthy for us to stay together. I think we should head our separate ways." Taiyō could only beg "B-but I promise!-" she was cut off with a stern look from Mikatsuki. "No. Taiyō. You deserve true love, and frankly, I am not someone you can find love in. I will never be the full moon that you wanted me to be, but I'm sure you can find that someone once we depart from each other."
With that, Mikatsuki sent Taiyō one last smile. This smile was filled with sadness and acceptance. Taiyō could only watch her moon go further and further away from her until she could no longer see her.
The sun wasn't bright enough to make the crescent moon become a full moon.
