Instead Of Getting Locked Up We’re Getting Knocked Up

Summary:

Jason finds out some shocking news while trying to take down a smuggling ring.

Notes:

Me: im major squicked out by pregnancy so I tend to avoid fics that have the pregnancy tag
Also me: reads one (1) fic where Jason dramatically announces he’s pregnant with Roy’s kid and now I must write a trans!Jason pregnancy fic.

This just covers the pregnancy reveal/announcement part.

Work Text:

Red Hood opens the window with a near silent click. Hood was trained with the best of the best and knows how to be so quiet no human could hear him.

He didn’t expect a Kryptonian to be inside the place he just broke into. Superman stares at Jason for a long moment, looking him up and down.

“What are you doing here?” Superman asks.

“Taking down a smuggling ring,” Hood answers.

No point in hiding it. He’s not as weirdly cryptic as some vigilantes, even to their own allies.

“I’m here because they stole some Kryptonian technology,” Superman says.

They nod to each other and Hood gestures to let the guy who can see through literal walls lead the way.

Hood soon regrets letting Superman take the lead.

Everytime Hood is just about to take a punch, Superman blocks it and knocks them out. In fact, Hood doesn’t manage to get into any serious altercation throughout the entire operation. He was really hoping to blow off some steam and punch a few child traffickers tonight and Superman is treating him with kid gloves!

Once Superman has knocked out and tied the bosses to the nearest pole, Red Hood blows up on him.

“What the fuck was that?! You know I can handle myself, right? You work with B all the time. You can’t treat me like I can’t even handle a single punch from other humans just because I’m not invulnerable like you are!”

Superman holds his hands up in front of him, like he’s trying to hold him back.

“Look, I’m not- Have you been to a doctor? Recently, I mean?”

That stops Hood in his tracks. At least enough that he’s more confused than pissed off.

“What the hell are you talking about? I’m fine? I’m not injured.” He gestures to himself as if that proves his health. He hasn’t experienced any serious injuries during patrol in months. The worst he’s had recently is an unrelated stomach bug.

“I’m not sure how to tell you this,” Superman says gently. “But I’m hearing two heartbeats coming from you.”

Jason’s heart stops beating.

“…Wh..What?”

A few hours later, Jason sits on the bathroom floor staring at 2 red lines.

On the other side of the bathroom door is a nervous Superman who already knows what Jason had to confirm for himself. Jason absolutely does not want to open that door and see Superman’s face.

Superman telling you while you’re complaining about him not letting you get punched has got to be the most embarrassing way to find out you’re pregnant. Nevermind that, Superman didn’t even know he was trans until this point. This is the WORST.

Jason needs anyone other than Clark Fucking Kent with him right now. Okay maybe not literally anyone.

He calls Roy.

“Hey, baby. You done over there? When are you coming home?”

Hearing Roy’s sweet voice on the other end of the line is the final straw. It’s all he can do to let out a whine. He’s so close but way too far.

“Jaybird?”

“Rooooooooyyyyyyyy.”

“Hey, it’s okay,” Roy comforts him. “I’m on my way, alright. Tracker says you’re at one of your safe houses. I’ll see you soon.”

Jason puts the pregnancy test inside a ziplock bag and puts it in his pocket.

Roy is good on his word and within a few minutes, Jason hears him on the other side of the door talking to Superman, asking about Jason.

Jason opens the bathroom door.

“What’s wrong, Jaybird? Are you okay?”

Jason doesn’t say anything and instead heads straight for him, holding him tightly in his arms. He hides his face in Roy’s neck. Roy holds him, rubbing a hand back and forth on his lower back.

“Hey, baby,” he soothes. Roy looks at Superman. “What happened? Is he okay?”

“Everything will be alright,” Superman says. “Just take him home.”

“I took the Harley here. I hope that’s okay,” Roy says.

Jason just nods. Roy holds his hand and leads him outside and onto the back of his motorcycle. Jason sits behind Roy and holds him tight, forehead resting on the curve between Roy’s neck and shoulder.

His thoughts are muddled and loud at the same time but Roy’s presence helps. This is Roy’s baby too and he couldn't have asked for a better partner in this situation.

Jason turns on the comms in his helmet so Roy can hear him over the wind.

“How’s Lian?”

Roy answers readily, pride obvious through his tone. He talks about a school project he’s been helping her with. Jason already knew about the school project but he lets the rumble of Roy’s voice calm him. His arms relax their hold. But still, the pregnancy test burns a hole through his pocket.

When they get back home, Jason goes to the bathroom and changes into more comfortable clothes. He takes the baggie out of his pocket and holds it tightly in his hand.

Jason leaves the bathroom and enters his and Roy’s shared room. As soon as he shuts the door, he speaks.

“I’m pregnant.” Jason holds out the pregnancy test.

Roy stares at him, eyes wide. He carefully takes the baggie with the pregnancy test from him and looks at it. After a long moment, he sits down on their bed. Roy looks up at him and opens his mouth. Before he can say anything. Jason moves to sit on the bed too. Roy shifts so his back is against the headboard and Jason sits in the middle of the bed, across from him. The test rests between them.

Roy leans forward to put his palm against Jason’s cheek. Jason instinctively leans into it.

“Are we keeping it?” Roy asks in a quiet voice.

Jason nods. “I want to. Only with you.”

“You sure?”

“Yes.”

Roy kisses his eyebrow.

“We’ll look into setting up a doctor’s appointment tomorrow.”

“Okay,” Jason whispers. He closes his eyes, tired after the rollercoaster of a day.

Jason lays down, cuddling up to Roy who is still sitting up with his back to the headboard.

“I love you,” Jason says into Roy’s hip.

“Love you too,” Roy whispers back.

He runs his fingers through Jason’s hair and takes out his phone. Roy opens up a reddit thread and asks for FTM friendly doctors. He doesn’t sleep that night, choosing to research and keep watch over his partner.

Turns out, Jason is eight weeks pregnant.

After the doctor’s appointment, they pick Lian up from school. Then, Roy and Jason sit Lian down to tell her the news. They weren’t sure what to expect but her running around, screaming in excitement was the best one of all the predicted reactions. After a few minutes of this, she pauses and looks at Jason.

“Wait, but how can JayJay be pregnant? I thought only girls could do that?”

“I got lucky.” Jason shrugs.

Lian accepts this explanation and goes back to running around yelling “I’m gonna have a baby sister!”

“Or a brother,” Roy reminds her.

“Nope. It’s gonna be a sister, even if it’s a boy.” Lian says with certainty.

Jason laughs.

“Just remember, this is a secret for now, okay?” Roy tells her.

She nods and takes out some crayons and paper out of her backpack to get to drawing.

Roy scoots closer to Jason. “You have to tell your family first because if we tell my fam first, everyone will know by the end of the week. For once I'm glad your family is so good at keeping secrets.”

Jason calls Alfred to tell him he’ll be at the Manor over the weekend. The weekend soon comes and Jason finds himself sitting on a terrace overlooking the garden while Alfred sits across from him, sipping his tea.

Jason takes his time enjoying the view. Alfred knows Jason is here for a reason but he doesn’t push and Jason is grateful.

After a moment, he looks Alfred in the eyes and says “Roy and I are expecting.”

Alfred raises his brows slightly before a smile crosses his face.

“I’m so happy for you both, my boy. And so incredibly proud. I’m honored to be the first person in the Wayne household you’ve told.”

“You’re the only one who knows other than Roy, Lian, and Superman.”

“Mr. Kent knows?”

Jason’s face turns red.

“Ah, I see.” Alfred looks at him in understanding, quickly figuring out how Jason learned of his unexpected pregnancy.

The subject thankfully changes to a book Alfred has been reading lately.

Right before Jason leaves, Alfred hugs him and decides to bring the matter up again.

“When are you planning on telling your father?”

“They’ll all know before tomorrow,” Jason smirks.

Tim enters the Batcave and instantly notices the manila envelope taped to the batcomputer. On the front is a doodle of Jason’s Red Hood helmet and what he assumes is Roy drawn in red sharpie.

Tim opens it to find a card and some photos. He doesn’t understand what he’s looking at at first until he reads the card. The front has a picture of a car and the words “The only thing daddy knows how to pull out of is the driveway.” Inside, it says “Surprise!! Looks like daddy left his nozzle in my fuel pump for too long and now mommy’s got a little race car driver.” Then, underneath, in Jason’s handwriting, “Turns out I’m pregnant. Obviously, I’m going to be taking a break from patrol.”

The photos are from an ultrasound.

“DAD!!” Tim yells, calling to Bruce who is still on his way downstairs. Then he turns on the cameras in the Batcave.

Bruce is there first but the rest soon follow. Tim hands Bruce the envelope, the papers back inside. Bruce notes the crude drawing on the front before carefully removing the contents.

He’s too far from the Batchair and ends up sitting on the floor, eyes not leaving the card. Bruce isn’t even dressed in the batsuit yet and he’s never looked so much like Brucie Wayne in the Batcave, dumbfounded and rumpled.

Steph steals the papers from him. Damian looks over her shoulder and his eyes widen slightly.

“Oh my God!” Steph says. She hands the papers over to Dick.

Dick looks it over and grins ear to ear. Duke takes the card next and holds it so that Cass and Babs can read it with him. They share a look and smile at each other.

Everyone is smiling and excited, except Bruce who still has one of the ultrasound photos, staring at it in awe.

Babs says to Dick “I can’t believe Jason is beating you twice in making Bruce a grandpa.”

Dick’s smile turns into a scowl. But it was all in good fun. He preferred being an Uncle to a Dad right now. Maybe someday, he’ll be ready for his own children but, at the moment, his siblings and niece are enough.

Later, Tim shares the video in the family group chat.

Steph: which fails to capture that tim was so shocked he called Bruce Dad
Tim: i only said that to make him come down faster
Jason: Thanks for the video, Timbit.

Oliver feels someone watching him.

The meeting has been going on for half an hour and during that meeting, Superman has been looking at him. Sometimes, he’ll look at Bruce as well, but he just ignores them.

Oliver has no idea what’s going on. Do they need to tell him something?

Oliver catches Superman’s eye and gives him a questioning look only for him to quickly look away.

As soon as the meeting is over, Batman leaves the room and Superman follows him. After he’s done talking to Batman, Superman comes up to Oliver.

“Hey, man. What’s up?” Oliver asks.

“Nothing much,” Superman says. “I was just wondering what you’ve been up to lately. Anything big happen?”

Oliver tells him about a law he’s been trying to get passed but he can tell, whatever answer he was supposed to give, that was the wrong one.

Roy decides to travel to Star to tell his family in person. Roy brings Lian with him since it’s been a while since she’s seen Roy’s side of the family. He hates to leave Jason so soon during the pregnancy but Jason’s family is happy to have him to themselves for a few days.

When he gets to the Queen household, he finds only his siblings there. Oliver is apparently in the middle of a strike and won’t be leaving City Hall for a while.

“Do we have to wait till grandpa gets here?” Lian asks him.

“Nope. It’s fine. You can tell them now.”

“Tell us what?” Mia asks.

“JAYJAY’S HAVING A BABY!” Lian yells, jumping in excitement.

“WHAT?” Mia and Connor speak at the same time.

“Surpriiise,” Roy says, emphasizing his words with jazz hands.

They both hug and congratulate him. Once everyone settles down, Mia leads Lian to her room to unpack her luggage.

“So,” Connor asks. “Are you going to ask Jason to marry you?”

Roy short circuits.

“It…it never even occurred to me,” Roy admits.

“Oh. Ok. I just thought-”

Roy waves his hand to let Connor know he’s fine. “It’s…You’re right. I should at least ask if Jason wants that. We just never talked about it before.”

After, he catches up with his siblings and takes a jet lag nap, Roy lays in his bed to call Jason.

As soon as he picks up the phone, Roy asks “How do you feel about marriage?”

“Are…you seriously asking me to marry you over the phone?”

“Well,” Roy blushes. “Only if you want to. I mean- Just uh.” Great, now he’s stuttering. “I just realized that we never really talked about it. I’m fine either way but I just wanted to ask.”

“This has gotta be the least romantic proposal I’ve ever received.”

“You’ve received other proposals?” Even though Roy knows Jason is just being dramatic, a small, silly part of him is a little jealous.

“No, which is why you had such a low bar!” Despite his words, Roy can hear him smiling over the phone. “Not even a single pride and prejudice quote? No, you couldn’t even propose in person? Had you behaved in a more gentlemanly manner, I would have said yes instantly! No, this is all I’m worth: a phone call. Don’t I deserve romance?”

“Romantic ain’t us,” Roy says, smiling at Jason’s antics. Even though he was joking, Roy’s heart soared at “ I would have said yes instantly.”

“So. Marriage. Thoughts?” Roy asks.

“Marriage is an oppressive system built around the idea that a woman is a man’s property. That being said, since it’s about property and letting the government know what to do with your stuff if you die without a will, marriage guarantees that if one of us kicks the bucket, the other will have the right to all our stuff and custody of the children. It also makes it easier for the kid to inherit your stuff.”

“There’s also the tax benefits and you’ll get to join my much better health insurance.”

“Which will be helpful for the pregnancy. And, if we’re married, you’ll get hospital visitation rights.”

“Oh, that’s important. I kinda need that.”

“Yeah,” Jason huffs. “Kinda.”

They sit in comfortable silence for a moment, letting all that was said sink in.

“So is that a yes?” Roy asks.

“It’s a yes.”

“I kinda regret asking you to marry me over the phone because I really wanna kiss you right now.”

“No, this is good.” Jason’s voice is soft and Roy wishes more than anything he could see his smile at this moment.

“But what do you say of me I did not deserve? My behavior at choosing to call instead of waiting is unpardonable. ‘Had I behaved in a more gentlemanly manner’. Your words have tortured me. No, I have been a selfish being all my life. As a child I was given good principles, but was left to follow them in pride and conceit. And such I might still have been, but for you. Dearest, loveliest Jason Peter Todd-Wayne.

Roy hears a wet choke on the other end of the line and before he knows it, Jason is full on crying.

“Awwww, baby.” Roy comforts through the mic. “I didn’t mean to make you cry. Are you okay?”

“Stupid..hormones,” Jason sniffles. “God.” Jason breathes. “Since when did you memorize Darcy’s proposal?”

“I don’t know. Maybe after the 400th time you made me watch it?”

Jason lets out a wet laugh and Roy wants to reach out over their distances and hold him close.

Roy decides to visit Dinah at her “place of work” running an undercover operation disguised as a flower shop.

Dinah hugs him as soon as he walks in.

“Hi, darling,” she greets him. She steps away to get a good look at him. “What are you doing in Star?”

“I’m here to get flowers for my expecting fiance,” Roy says. His cheeks are starting to hurt from smiling so much.

Dinah blinks at him for a long moment, face completely blank. Then she smacks him on the arm. Hard.

“Hey!” Roy holds his bicep and leans away from her.

“You- You brat! Are you serious?”

“Yeah,” Roy chuckles.

“Oh my god! I’m so happy for you.” Dinah leans in to hug him again, this time tight enough to lift him a few inches off the ground. “Who else knows?”

“Jason’s family, Lian, Superman, Mia, and Connor.”

“You haven’t told Oliver yet?”

“He’s busy on strike.”

Dinah and Roy give each other mischievous looks.

Oliver hasn’t eaten in three days and his back hurts from sleeping on the floor but it was totally worth it to get the local government to finally agree to a meeting with the strike organizers to talk about gender neutral bathrooms in schools. But there ain’t no rest for socialist vigilantes, so instead of heading home, he goes straight to the Watchtower.

Only to be fucking held at gunpoint within minutes of entering the safest place in the world.

He was surrounded by several ninjas, all completely covered in black, including their faces with no way to discern their identity except for body type. And Oliver was sure there were more ninjas hiding in the shadows and other rooms of the Watchtower.

“I thought ninjas didn’t use guns,” Oliver says, because he isn’t smart.

“This one does,” the one holding the gun growls.

One of the ninjas steps forward and ties him up, forcing him into one of the chairs at the Justice League table. The rest of the Justice League, minus Batman, are all tied up as well. Oliver notes that Superman is also tied up. Just who are these guys that they can get the drop on Superman?

“What are you doing here?” Hal Jordan asks.

“Us?” asks one of the ninjas. A woman, Oliver guesses. “We’re just the messengers.”

At that, the ninjas spread out, handing an envelope to each of the league members at the table.

“Now, no more funny business,” says the man with the gun and before Oliver has a chance to do anything, he shoots.

Oliver flinches back at the sound but when he opens his eyes, he finds Superman untied and smiling down at the envelope the ninjas handed to him. Oliver looks around and sees the rest of the Justice League, unharmed but equally confused.

He finally looks at the man with the gun to see a little flag sticking out of the barrel with the words “It’s A Baby!” on it.

The ninjas unmask themselves to reveal Batman’s brood, all smirking. Oliver is horrified to discover some of these ninjas are members of his brood as well. Oliver pulls at the rope keeping him tied to find that it’s loose and easy to pull out of.

He joins everyone in opening their letters. Inside is a wedding invitation and a pregnancy announcement.

Oliver blinks at the card, not comprehending. He looks up and sees the matching smiles on Roy and Jason’s face.

Holy Fuck.

“Wait.” Oliver looks around and makes note of all the “ninjas”. “Am I the last in our family to know?”

“You were busy,” Roy shrugs. “We thought we’d make your announcement special.”

“Sorry, babe,” Dinah says. “We couldn’t resist the opportunity to prank you.”

Everyone gets up to congratulate Jason and Roy on their engagement/baby and also Bruce and Oliver for being 2nd time grandparents.

Oliver stands up and pats Jason on the shoulder then hugs Roy.

“Your sense of humor is awful,” Oliver tells him.

“It was mostly Dinah’s idea”, Roy tells him.

“I’m so proud of you,” Oliver says, eyes beginning to water.

“Thanks, Dad,” Roy says and finally hugs him back.

Notes:

About the card: The pulling out of the driveway joke is also from becauseimmissy but the nozzle in the fuel pump joke is a stars_ship_us original :) (unless my subconscious remembered a different joke)
