Work Text:

The embers of the campfire crackle softly, casting a warm glow over the clearing. There, Link and Zelda have chosen to make their camp for the night. The weight of their recent victory against Ganon still hung heavy in the air, but for the first time in what feels like an eternity, they are at peace.

Zelda lays curled up in her bedroll, her chest rising and falling in a steady rhythm as she sleeps soundly. Link sits nearby, his gaze fixed on the twinkling stars that adorn the night sky. So peaceful, so bright… Link cannot help but think it must be a good omen, to have such a dazzling sight in the vault of the sky now, after the darkness that has plagued Hyrule for so long.

It’s been a hard journey, hasn’t it? His mind slowly fills with memories, as many as stars watch over him in the sky, of all the moments he’s lived through as he’s roamed this land, fighting to save it day after day. He has been so strong, hasn’t he? He’s fought so many monsters, healed so many wounds, solved so many puzzles, mysteries, helped so many people… In the end, he had to be so strong for so long. He had to be determined. He had a goal, after all. To save his land, to save…

As the fire crackles beside him, Link's gaze drifts from the stars to Zelda's sleeping form. She looks so peaceful, so serene, her features bathed in the soft light of the moon. It has all been for her, hasn’t it? Every day that he’s fought, every wound that he’s healed, every step he’s taken…

Because Zelda was protecting him all this time. He thinks of her, of her unwavering courage, her boundless compassion, and the fierce determination that burned within her. She has been his constant companion throughout their journey, his guiding light in the darkest of times, and he knew with a certainty that ran deeper than the deepest ocean that he would go to the ends of the earth for her. For her only.

He reaches out a hand, gently brushing a blonde lock of hair away from her face, his fingers lingering against her skin for a moment longer than necessary, his heart full to the brim. He says nothing, he simply sits there, bathed in the warm glow of the campfire, his heart overflowing with affection for the woman who had shaped his life in ways he could never have imagined.

To his touch, and as the night breeze whispers through the trees, Zelda stirs from her sleep. Her eyelids flutter open to reveal the soft, gentle glow of the campfire. She turns her head slightly to find Link sitting nearby, his gaze fixed on the stars above.

"Link?" Her voice was soft, barely above a whisper, as sleep still clings to her lips. "Are you unable to rest?"

Link turns to face her, his expression unreadable as always but his eyes filled with warmth and affection. He doesn’t speak, but a small nod of his head reveals his answer, the flickering firelight casting shadows across his features.

Zelda smiles at his silent response, tenderly. She knows that Link is a man of few words, but she also knows that he has always been there for her, his presence a comforting anchor, always grounding her and keeping her afloat.

"Me neither," Zelda admits, her voice barely above a murmur as she shifts to sit up, her gaze meeting his. "I suppose there's too much on our minds to rest easy tonight."

Link nods in understanding, his eyes never leaving Zelda's face. He wants to tell her how much he cherishes these quiet moments together, how he finds peace in being with her even as they’re facing the chaos of their world, but... The words elude him, lost in the depths of his heart where only she can ever reach.

Instead, he reaches out a hand, his fingers brushing against Zelda's cheek. Tender and slow, a caress that says more than his words ever would. He hopes she understands. Oh, how he hopes Zelda knows he will be there for her, always, no matter what.

Zelda's smile widens at his touch, a soft sigh leaving her lips. She leans into his hand, tender and so familiar. To her, Link always had a way of saying more with a simple gesture than most could with a thousand words, and in this moment, as they sit together beneath the starlit sky, she feels him more than ever before.

She watches Link's serene expression, the flickering firelight casting a warm glow over his soft features. She can feel the weight of the world resting on his shoulders, the burdens he’s carried silently for years and years and years. He’s the Hero of Hyrule, after all. But even so, aren’t heroes also simple men? Oh, how she longed to offer him some measure of comfort.

"Link," she begins, her voice soft like silk, "I know you find peace in silence, but perhaps... would you like me to sing you a lullaby? It might help you find some rest."

Link's gaze softens at her words, a faint smile gracing his lips as he meets her eyes. He nods in response, his silent affirmation filling her chest with butterflies. Zelda smiles too, warmth spilling down her veins as she scoots over to make room for Link beside her.

"Come lay with me," she whispers, patting the space next to her.

Link hesitates for a moment before slowly easing himself down beside her, his gaze shifting between the stars above and her. Zelda shifts closer, and tentatively… Her hand comes to rest against his cheek. It’s gentle, her palm gracing the soft skin of his face, and she can almost feel the blood rushing beneath her fingertips. Then, she begins to hum a soft, soothing melody.

The first notes of the lullaby fill the air and… Just like that, Link feels the tension in his muscles begin to melt away, replaced by a sense of calm that he hasn’t felt in a long, long time. It must be magic, he thinks as he closes his eyes, allowing himself to be swept away by the gentle rhythm of Zelda's voice. The warmth of her touch seeps into his tired soul.

Zelda continues to sing, her voice rising and falling like a gentle breeze, carrying away the worries and fears that have plagued Link's mind for years and years. She delicately traces patterns on his cheek with her fingertips. A silent display of all the tender and fragile emotions that live within the chambers of her heart.

And as the final notes of the lullaby fade into the starry night, Zelda opens her eyes to find Link has drifted off into a peaceful rest. She smiles at him, her chest swelling with love for the man who has stolen her heart so completely, who has sheltered and nurtured it as if it was the most precious thing in the entirety of the world.

"Sleep well, Link," she whispers, her voice drifting into the night air. "I'll watch over you, always."

The night carries on around them, and Zelda remains by his side, forever to come.
