Work Text:

Warm grey eyes reflect the cold downpour outside.

“When I die, my heart will go to the moon and shine down on you with her.”

A smile followed by a raised eyebrow.

“Why speak of this? You’re not dying anytime soon.”

Those oh so beautiful eyes meet his.

“Moonlit rains will be my tears. I will weep for you; weep until the heavens have dried and you have no choice but to go on. To move on.”

A surprised blink. A hitch in his breath.

“…”

Ivory hair glows silver in the moonlight. His heart's light.

“I won’t let you fall into the same state I was in, Orpheus. Whenever you lose sight of your meaning on this earth, the skies will shower and my heart will pour just to remind you why you’re still here.”

A hand tenderly brushes a silvery strand away.

“…Why?”

A chuckle. Grey eyes twinkle with mischief.

“Because some idiot had the nerves to take my love for himself. I’m not letting that last piece of my existence die out so easily.”

A smile, bright as the moon outside and sweet as a nightingale’s song. Auburn eyes flutter shut as his lips move to capture it. The world melts in a swirl of moonbeams and raindrops and hearts beating in harmony as lives intertwine; engulfed in a fury of melancholic passion.

Now, many, many a moons later, she, bright as a million stars, weeps. The owner of those auburn eyes, no longer shining with youthful curiosity, looks out the tear-stained window at her brilliance. And his heart aches. Aches and aches but for what? He didn’t know.

All he knew was the sudden warmth in his chest as the moon seemed to brighten.

Brighten with the remnants of a promise whispered a thousand nights ago, in the same moonlit rain, the same manor, and with the same two broken souls separated by fate yet tied together by the everlasting bond of—

—Love.

And so the moon wept.
