Chapter Text
Boombox.. What was there to say? Medkit always found him rather annoying, and that hadn’t changed in the time that he’d known him. The louder man bugged him without mercy, he did whatever he could while blasting the most obnoxious music in Medkit’s ears and following him around like a lost puppy wherever he went. A lot of the time it felt like he was deliberately trying to annoy him. Though at the moment, there was no Boombox. Just Medkit alone with his thoughts, sitting on a bench and trying to relax after a phight he had participated in.
Unfortunately, Boombox was in that phight as well, meaning he was probably somewhere in the area. Medkit tried to stop thinking about that.
“Med!! Yo!”
A familiar voice called out. Medkit groaned, pinching his nose bridge. It was Boombox. Of course it was. Why would it be anyone else? Medkit didn’t bother to turn his head to speak to him.
“...What do you want.”
Boombox turned down the volume on his gear for once. “What’d you say???”
“Nevermind. I would like to kindly ask you to please leave, Boombox.”
“Aww, why? Can’t hang out with my favourite doctor??”
Medkit sighed, rubbing his temples.
“It’s almost absurd how easily you give me a headache.”
Boombox laughs, as if taking that as a joke.
“C’mon, Med, I’m not that bad!”
Medkit didn’t respond and turned his head away. He was thinking. He had noticed how Boombox’s volume got a little quieter after he mentioned his headache and when he turned down the boombox to be able to hear him better. Boombox typically did not do things like that. He just annoyed him and annoyed him until Medkit began ignoring him, just like he was trying to do right now.
The thought of Boombox beginning to become maybe just a little bit more thoughtful was still floating around in Medkit’s head. He brushed it off. Boombox was nothing more than a nuisance. Nothing more.
Boombox’s voice cut through the silence, stopping Medkit’s thought process from continuing further.
“Whatcha thinking about?”
Medkit got up, grabbing his first aid kit as he did. He stopped for a moment.
“I am leaving. This conversation is pointless and is leading nowhere.”
“Wait! Med!”
“...What.”
Hesitating for a moment or two, he sighed, considering saying what was on his mind.
“Would you like to… go get coffee? You honestly look like you need it. And hey, I’ll pay!”
Medkit considered it briefly, then brushed it away.
“I feel like you’d be even more insufferable if you were caffeinated.”
“Nah, actually. Caffeine doesn’t really do that much to me. Sometimes it makes me even more tired.”
“Fine, but I’m getting my coffee and leaving as soon as possible.”
Boombox chuckled and attached his gear to the straps on his back, then began walking. He looked behind him to make sure Medkit was following, and he was, though a bit slower than Boombox. When Medkit caught up with Boombox, he contemplated holding onto him. For the reason of keeping the same pace, obviously.
Before Medkit could finish thinking about that, Boombox grabbed his hand, though Medkit quickly pulled it away without a word. The two reached their destination after a few minutes of walking and Boombox immediately walked through the doors, as if he had been there millions of times. The bright blue interior seemed slightly familiar, even to Medkit.
“This is your friend’s cafe, no?”
“Yeah! Slingshot’s Cat Cafe! I usually just go here anyway.”
Boombox shrugs, scanning the area for Slingshot or Skateboard, who was also a regular. He spots Slingshot at the counter, so he drags Medkit along to the counter.
“Hey, Boombox!”
Slingshot calls out.
“And… Medkit! I don’t think I’ve seen you here before.”
“You would be correct. I have not been here before.”
“Oh! Welcome, then!” Slingshot then turned to Boombox and began speaking to him.
Medkit nodded, standing there idly as the two conversed. After a few minutes they had a table. Medkit and Boombox sat at it and they waited. After a little bit, Vine Staff appeared and took their orders. A black coffee and an iced coffee with extra sugar. Medkit added that he wanted his in a to-go cup, which made Boombox a little more upset than he’d like to admit or show.
They got their drinks after a few moments and Boombox immediately took a sip of his iced coffee, meanwhile Medkit just sat in his seat with his coffee on the table.
“Well, I’ll be leaving then.”
“You sure, Med?? We just got here. It’d be like… super awesome if you stayed.”
Boombox says with a chuckle.
“Yes. I told you in advance I’d leave as soon as I could.”
“Well, I still need to pay, dude.”
After Medkit heard that, he pulled out his wallet and put a 10 bux down on the table.
“But the total was only 3.50-”
“Boombox, It’s fine. Just let me do this.”
“If you insist!”
Medkit then stood up and left without a word, leaving Boombox sitting alone at the table. He managed to get the attention of a staff member and paid the amount Medkit had left at the table. He didn’t really know what to do with the rest and assumed Medkit wanted to leave it as a tip, so he just told them to keep the change. It was later in the day, so he just stayed and hung out like he typically might any other day.
Eventually the cafe closed for the day, Slingshot getting off work and Skateboard walking into the cafe and asking for a pastry despite Slingshot’s annoyance. The three hung out while listening to music from Boombox’s gear. Then, the topic of what had happened earlier came up.
“So.. made your move, Boombox?”
Skateboard teases.
“Huh?”
“I told him what happened earlier with you and Medkit.”
Slingshot said, shrugging and chuckling slightly.
“It was kinda hard to watch though… he left after, like, 5 minutes.”
“He told me before we went that he was just there for coffee and he’d leave right after! Besides, it wasn’t even a date.”
Skateboard laughed and spoke up again.
“We know you wanted it to be though.”
“Ugh… I should’ve never told either of you any of this.”
Boombox sighs, covering his face with one of his hands. He felt his face heat up out of his embarrassment.
“It wasn’t a date! He doesn’t like me like that! Or… in general to be honest.”
Slingshot spoke next.
“Well, who knows! Maybe he does and doesn’t wanna admit it.”
Boombox stayed quiet for a moment, taking his hand off his face.
“Well… At least you guys believe in me? Even if you guys are kinda assholes to me sometimes.”
He says in a joking voice, nudging Skateboard.
“Heyy! Why’d you nudge me specifically??”
“That’s for teasing me.”
They continued their chat until it got late out and Boombox and Skateboard left. They both got rides back to Playground and got back to their apartments safely. Boombox got ready for bed, put some music on, and sat down on his phone and fucked around for a few hours to preoccupy his mind. Lately, nothing but Medkit had been on it.
He didn’t particularly like that, but when he put his phone down, he was tired enough to not care.
