Work Header

a new pattern (chase me in broad daylight)

Summary:

Pansy chases Red through Greece, delighting in the new setting. Red is there, running away in broad daylight, when usually they strike at night. So, of course, Pansy gives chase. She ends up getting far more than she had bargained for.

Work Text:

Pansy does not know Red to fight in the daylight.

They fight in the cover of darkness, setting traps upon traps upon traps, and they are always one step ahead.

But here she is, crawling through Greece, in clear daylight.

How peculiar.

"What gift do you have in store for me, my dear?" she ponders almost inaudibly as she wanders through the streets.

It does not make sense.

A bold streak of red, almost like fire was put onto a human head, catches her eyes and she turns swiftly. It's a person, climbing up on a pillar, and Pansy laughs. Then she breaks out into a run.

Adrenaline bumps through her veins as she leaps up, once, twice, three times, and begins climbing after Red.

Her heels do not afford her much balance on the pillar but Pansy makes due. She leaps up, catching her fingers on a ledge, and continues to pull herself up. Red runs and Pansy runs after them, jumping and leaping and laughing at the thrill.

She's not met a hit–wizard as talented as them before.

The after effects of the war had left her without many job offers and being a hit–witch was one of the few that she could do. They didn't care that she had supported Voldemort, they only cared that she could find and catch all the targets that the Aurors couldn't.

From that, she'd climbed her way through the ranks very easily and it was almost laughable. Slowly, she'd begun to love the thrill of the chase, the fear as they realized that she wouldn't stop, and slowly picking away at their arrogance.

It was a beautiful thing.

And here is Red, who was no longer fighting her under the cover of darkness. They sprint free, up and through Greece, in broad daylight.

The rush from this is a heady and fueling thing.

Red leaps up and lets themselves fall. A blanket of magic appears—Pansy gets the feel of lightning and lemons—and Pansy leaps after them.

They dart into a cave, a magical one that makes the muggles around do a double-take before Pansy shoots off a few confundus spells before leaping after them.

She crawls and shimmies her way through the cave, grunting at the loose pieces of stone that catch on her uniform. "Where are you my darling Red?" she sing-songs. There is a slight giggle from up ahead and she races toward them.

"Over here~" they croon back and Pansy laughs.

She keeps going, sighing in a small bit of relief when the tunnel gets a little bit bigger so she can crawl on all fours rather than crawling on her stomach.

The tunnel leads to a drop, at least 6 metres high, and she lets herself down carefully before executing a perfect leap, flip, and lands on her feet. Then she spins around when she feels lightning electrocute the air behind her.

Red is short, is her first thought.

Pansy is tall, like most pureblood heiresses. She is 5'8 without her heels and her current platforms make her between 5'10 and 5'11.

Red, however, is 5'4 or 5'5 by the looks of it. Short and small but not petite.

"Hello," she greets happily, still surveying Red. She is muscular, definitely having some sort of athletic background from before being a world-renowned thief. "Are we doing this easy or hard?"

They only tilt their head to the side and shrug carelessly. "That depends. What do you want from me?"

"Officially, I'm supposed to bring you in to the ICW for theft of various magical artifacts. Unofficially, I'd like to know who you are so that I can congratulate you on your work. It's exceptional, truly."

They laugh and Pansy is struck by it. She'd never had anybody laugh at her, unless it was mocking or derisive, but they seemed truly amused by her. Their eyes—blue and electric like their magic—twinkle with mirth. "I'm afraid I have two more stops to make. I got a dare and I'm not going to go without completing it. My brother will be rather smug about it and I'm not going to let the prat win."

Pansy stops and stares.

A dare?

Red is stealing various artifacts under the best security measures in the wizarding world for a dare.

On one hand, Pansy can admire her skill and audacity.

On the other, Pansy cannot let this slide. Her time was wasted because of a dare.

"Are you fucking serious?" she groans. "Just— no. I need you to come in. I cannot let you continue to do this. On a fucking dare of all things in the world."

Red shrugs and tucks the artifact into her pocket. Two rings from Cleopatra and Mark Anthony.

"Well, we both can't do it apparently, so I guess we're just going to have to duel it out."

Red is leaping at Pansy before she can get a word in edgewise and Pansy dodges all the spells frantically, before regaining her footing. She dances through the spells, shooting off her own, but Red ducks and weaves like it's the easiest thing she's ever done.

Pansy is not amused and leans more into darker spells, weighing them on her tongue and spinning out plans in her mind. Red's eyes narrow and Pansy swallows a yelp when she just barely evades a severing curse.

She executes three different spell chains, leaving Red dodging without the chance to cast anything, and Pansy lunges. She tackles Red, grabs hold of her hood, and yanks it back.

Usually, what it would've done is choke them, but in this case it just slides off of her head.

"Weasley?!"

Ginvera fucking Weasley looks up at her and nods. "Hello!" she chirps before leaning up to kiss Pansy.

Pansy freezes, wide–eyed, and then Ginvera pulls back and shoves Pansy off of her. Then she scrambles up and smiles, before casting a sticking spell over Pansy.

"So sorry to cut this short, but I do have to go. Have to complete this dare and all."

Yet again, Pansy is left speechless and Ginvera points her wand up. A string of magic attaches to the top of the cave and then Ginvera salutes her.

Pansy only just manages to bring herself back to the present, and begins to undo the sticking spell, when Ginvera pulls her arm down.

The ceiling caves in immediately.
