Work Text:

Chuuya and Dazai were partners. He thought it was clear. They made out, sometimes even called each other pet names. So what if they never put a label on it.
It was because Dazai kept insisting he was straight and Chuuya honestly didn't mind, because Dazai was still clearly his...when did he stop? They flirted all the time. Gave each other gay panic, it was fun.
Chuuya loved it. He felt loved, he felt like he had someone.
Then Dazai started spending more and more time with his friends. Going to places he promised to take Chuuya. It was okay, they could go together too. But Dazai never took him. He told himself he's too jealous. It's a good thing the mackerel has friends. He's not gonna be a possessive partner. Who is he to interfere with the younger's social life?
So he just waited. Tried at least, because waiting wasn't Chuuya's strong side. In the end it always ended the same. The ginger would take the phone and text Dazai, find a funny meme, something.
Sometimes he'd try to tag him somewhere. At times he got a response, quite often he didn't.
After a while he started doubting himself. He hoped he never forced his affections onto the other, didn't make him uncomfortable. So he toned flirting and everything else down. Because even though he's not anything with Dazai relationshipwise, they're still friends. Good friends. Close friends. Like they used to... right? Why did it change? When did it change? What have I done wrong?

He did wholeheartedly believed he was still important to Dazai. They had a great time on the now rare occasions they saw each other, or at least it seemed so.
Except one day he found a bomb under his car. What he didn't find, was his partner. He kept blowing up the other's phone, but to no avail. He hasn't been blocked, but it was clear that in Dazai's life, Chuuya no longer mattered.
He mourned. He got drunk. In the end, Chuuya will always be alone though. It's impossible for him to be constant in someone's life
About time he learned.
