Purpose Dilemma

Summary:

In which a world turned to dust by a simple coin drop, can even the most average find a purpose? Even if the purpose is to be nothing more of an after-thought?

Jumper was average, nothing more and nothing less. So when looking out of the classroom window watching blood spill on grass and pavement, is it bad if she thinks this is her chance? A chance of being above average.

But you can’t predict anything in the apocalypse, no one can.

Chapter 1: “Madness Is Gravity”

Chapter Text

Jumper is convinced her life force is being sucked out of her, not for any big shocking reason. It was more of her sitting in an empty classroom before school even starts. The Levels Club wanted to meet early this year for the end of the semester to plan a big assembly, but they canceled at the last minute. And she means last minute. She had already moved all of the desks in the classroom in a panel formation for them and everything. And yet she was the only one sitting down with nothing to do, watching paint dry would probably be more entertaining than this.. actually she takes that back it would NOT be more entertaining.

Jumper props one of her hands onto her face as she observes the classroom her club would’ve met in. On the wall there was a class photo in the middle being Minute Tech, despite being a first year like her he somehow climbed the ranks in popularity and became the president of student council. His vice president being Branzy Craft, Jumper was a little envious of his success but she had her own things so she never really talked to the guy. Only time they really interacted is when the student council would do club check ups.

Jumper being a main representative of the Levels Club was their limit of their interactions. In the corner of the picture was Peter Pentar, of what Jumper knows everyone just calls him Pentar. Apparently he was somewhat of a class clown, but not annoying. She applauds him for being not annoying but still funny. Below Pentar was someone Jumper was very familiar with, Vitalasy. They used to be stuck together everyday in the summer. They didn’t have a falling out, more of just distance grew them apart. Jumper still waves to him in the hallways but throughout the year the wave back from him died down. To a point where Jumper doesn’t really bother to try and wave anymore.

Completely zoned out just staring at the class photo observing others in the class she was a little envious, people like Squiddo are in the photo. Squiddo is a well known girl for creating an IInvestigation club but still not being made fun of in the hallways. There also was wemmbu who was right next to Minute holding up two fingers behind Minute’s head to form bunny ears, a long time friend? Probably. He was known for his pranks on the staff. If Minute was the teachers favorite he was the least favorite. There was also 4CVIT in the back around Mid Mystic and Cube, 4C is very popular for just being kind. He gives stuff to anyone if they ask Jumper doesn’t think there’s anyone who doesn’t like him.

Prince Zam, a very smiley dude that used to be a major representative of the student council before this year, was in the second row. According to rumors Zam has some form of grudge against Minute for his first year at accomplishments. She feels a little bad for the guy because she knows how that feels, but life is life. A little away from Zam was a guy named Ash Swag, he was basically a principal reporter even though he’s said out loud at lunch how much he hates the Principal. If the school had to have a hierarchy for students then he’d be at the top. Influence and popularity goes long ways with him, known for charisma and well thought out lies.

Despite everything, Jumper wasn’t in the photo. She wasn’t in the class. She was a random placement in the school, not anyone with a major name. Her only real friends are the Levels club, but even then none of them are in her class, she is the outlier. But she came to terms with that weeks ago. She won’t admit it still stings knowing that though. Jumper thinks she’s a good person, never once has she talked behind someone’s back, she hears rumors but doesn’t spread them, she has decent grades, follows the rules, and wears nothing outstanding like everyone else, the few friends she has she hasn’t ever doubted or thought bad of. She was just average.

Especially compared to the other first years who have made names for themselves. She perks up after realizing she’s zoned out for so long, checking the time of her watch it’s been 40 minutes of just staring. That’s embarrassing, but before she could go into her inner monologue again a giant boom happened outside. At first she thought it was a car crash, she had no interest in looking at the damage. But when it continued to happen with screams soon following she finally got up to look out the window. And there she was, staring at the end of the world with her own eyes.

Weird deformed monsters were on the ground crashing into cars and people, effectively spilling the red blood onto the pavement. Monsters with wings were in the air attaching to trees and buildings making them crumble beneath their body weight. A little away she sees a bus come to a stop, a kid flies out of the bus (not literally) and runs away. Only stopping to take a photo, leaving the rest of the bus behind.

That seemed to be the best decision because soon the bus was shaken up by something Jumper could describe as a cicada. Jumper felt her heart drop as a deformed thing with what looked like shark teeth started her in the eyes. She was effectively stuck in place, is this what they mean when life flashes before your eyes? Is she going to have her blood soaking into the tile floor as she dies without a name to herself?

No, if she can’t make herself known in a normal world. Then maybe she can make herself known in the apocalypse. Jumper doesn’t wait anymore, as the weird shark starts to crawl to the window she grabs the closest chair and moves to the side of the window. The shark thing as predicted breaks the window in an attempt to get in, but she reacts faster. Slamming the chair into the shark's temple stunning it, but she wasn’t done. Instead of leaving she moves the chair to stab the metal chair leg into the monster's eyes. Putting all her strength into pushing the shark away from the window, while she wasn’t able to do that she was able to push herself away from the window.

Looking at the destruction she backs away, she refuses to die here. Not while she still has a will to fight, turning around running out the door away from the room she runs into the bathroom. While maybe enclosed it was the only place she could lock the door and without windows. So she sits down on the closed toilet breathing heavily, her hands shake as she tries to get her phone unlocked.

Finally unlocking it she sees the silenced notifications of the news app going wild. With reporters panicking to get out news but also live, and unluckily for her as soon as she clicks onto the live stream she just sees the reporter get mauled. Choking on her own bile she closes her phone not wanting to face the truth, but also she needs to save her battery. The deformed beings outside were without a doubt going to somehow tear the wifi towers down.

Now that she’s sitting down Jumper is unnervingly aware of her heartbeat, she doesn’t get sick often but her heart is her main weak point. Some days even just walking up the stairs seems like she ran a mile. So her situation isn’t amazing for that fact, no time to think about that now though. She needs to get out of the school first, schools are never safe in the movies so probably won’t in real life. If she makes it to the roof she can use the emergency fire escape ladder to go down behind the building without being seen by any monsters at the front of the school.

Inspired by ParaDexTwo(reconnectng) - “names are hard”

Don’t know how long this fic will be or how often updates will be.. hopefully won’t die out! I’ll try my hardest to not loose motivation.

Trying to explain how the classrooms are:

Lifesteal is one classroom, it’s everyone minus Jumper in that class. The only people who really know about Jumper are Minute and Vitalasy, yet either of the duos don’t talk much before

Levels is one classroom, Jumper is not in the class either
Levels is also a club — Jumper is in the club as the first year rep. No club member knows why she joined the club (there is a reason)

Jumper is in a random class, she’s often switching friend groups not because of drama but on her own accord to make sure no one is left out.
