Work Text:
Lark drops out of his window- Sparrow knew where he was going, and they’re the only person who needed to know. He zips his hoodie up, shivering in the dark cold air as he starts to walk down the silent streets of Sandimas. He doesn’t dare look up at the Doodler as he walks, not that he can see it much in the dark. Technically, it was night, even with the darkness and mind bending Eldritch entity hanging so close you could touch it. He kicks a rock, trying to ignore his internal voice of anger and disappointment. Today had once again brought no new information and he wasn’t feeling good at all. Something cold hits his exposed head and he looks slightly up from the ground, seeing some snow starting. That explains why it has been so cold. He shoves his hands in his pockets, feeling the keys he put there - the ones to his house, his jeep, and the house he’s headed to. He climbs up the steps and puts in the key, letting himself into the quiet house. He closes the door, making sure to lock it and walks to the kitchen, grabbing a couple beers from the fridge before heading to the stairs stepping silently past the parent’s bedroom. into the room with the lights on. He knocks- not wanting to get yelled at or attacked. Silence fills the room on the other side as the feet come closer and he opens the door.
“Lark.”
“Hey grant.” Grant motions him into his room and closes the door.
“Today bad?”
“Nothing new.” Grant nods, not asking more about Lark’s emotional state. That’s what Lark liked-for people not to ask him if he was okay or not. He didn’t need that. Lark sits down in Grant’s bed, setting the beers to the side and taking his boots off. Grant had been playing Zelda. Replaying it again.
“This time of night isn’t the best for playing Fortnight. Mostly either gets the grinders or the noobs and not a lot of variety.” Grant shrugs, grabbing his joy cons and sitting down right next to Lark. Lark reaches towards his ponytail, letting his curly hair out of its bondage as the unpause button is pressed. Lark opens the beers using the edge of Gant’s bed frame and hands one to Grant. Lark takes a swig of his own unimpressed by the flavour. (British 😒/j)
“Was Sparrow asleep?”
“Yeah. Classes at 7. ”
“Why do college professors do that? 7am classes are gross.” lark gives a small smile in agreement. He gently leans into Grant’s shoulders, not saying or acknowledging it. Grants joy one click and vibrates as he plays his game. The silence falling between them is normal. Two broken silent people finding respite in each other. Lark watches out the window as snow starts to fall. He hates that the world can still be beautiful, that the world shows its beauty to him. He looks away putting his nose on Grant's shoulder. “It’s snowing,” Lark mumbles
“Hmm?” Grant glances at the window. “Oh, guess it is. You think we will get snowed in?”
“Nah. Haven’t seen snow stick longer than a few hours in years.”
“Fair enough. Still gonna be cold tonight.”
“That’s why I’m here.”
“Cool.”
“Cool.”
After a few hours Grant yawns and fails to hide it from the sleepy Lark, who looks up at Grant. Grant’s auburn hair falls near his eyes and Lark sleepily reaches up to bat at it. Grant looks down and gives a small smile, bending down to give Lark a sleepy kiss on the forehead. The two of them only show such gentleness to each other when they are high on sleep deprivation.
“What time is it?” Lark mumbles as Grant grabs his phone.
“3:30am ish. Want to lay down?”
“No,” he lies — and they both know it, as Lark is already trying to tug Grant down to the bed. Grant keeps his smile and reaches for the lamp, turning the knob, making the light go out.
“We can sleep all day tomorrow. The others can be in charge of shit,” Grant says as he finally lets Lark tug him down.
“Mhm,” Lark nods into Grant’s shoulder, wrapping his arms around the bigger man. Grant nuzzles into Lark’s curly hair, gently smelling in the smoke.
“It snowed. No work.”
“Yeah, we probably won’t have work if it snows long. I hope it sticks for a while.” Stupid global warming and Doodler shit. Grant frowns a little. Lark, mostly hearing Grant’s sadness, gives a gentle bap to Grant’s face. Grant looked down at his angry boyfriend. Grant shifts his body so he’s face to face with Lark pulling him into a rare gentle kiss. Neither one of them is stressed or angry. No one is panicking. It’s not a goodbye kiss to ease Grant’s anxiety — it was a sweet gentle thing, like hot cocoa while being wrapped in a blanket. For Lark it was just as amazing. He would never admit it to anyone, but these are the few moments he feels love of any kind. Towards himself. From others. For others. No one will ever know, so a gentle sleepy kiss is all Grant will ever get. They break the kiss, smiling sleepily at each other. Lark’s eyelids heavy as he blinks, studying the man in front of him. Grant has stubble again, having forgotten to shave. Lark found it cute and understood it as a side effect of Grant’s adhd. Lark reaches up and runs a hand along the 19 year old’s jaw.
“Oh hey. Yeah. I need to shave again,” Grant mumbles. He tries to dodge its Lark's hand as it progresses towards his face. Lark was faster even in his sleepy state so Grant has given up and lets Lark texturely stim with his face.
Lark’s hand goes slack against Grant’s face for a few seconds and Grant watches, wondering if Lark had fallen asleep. Lark’s eyes blink open again, definitely very sleepy but he wants to see grant. Both of them early this soft Grant giving him a gentle smile that right now he accepts. . He sees grants face and tries to focus on it again only for his eyes to slowly close,
“Go to sleep” Grant whispers a hand running through a few more curls.
“Mmm. No. " Lark wines as he loses the fight to the warmth around him and the safety he feels. Such a rare feeling-
feeling safe, something that only happens on these late nights. Lark doesn’t remember closing his eyes but he feels the gentle kiss to his forehead as he loses consciousness. Exposed skin cold from the air but his body wraps close to grant under a blanket in the perfect warmth, as the snow falls maybe everything will line up and the snow might stick-just a few inches for the two emotional messes to go out and have fun. Right now they sleep, letting their worries, goals, and stresses fall away in the warm arms of their lover’s arms.
