Chapter Text
“Alright, my little smurfs.” Papa Smurf had formed a public announcement in Smurf Village. “I have called you all here today. To say, that we need some smurfberries. We’re running low on them for food. Any volunteers, care to go? I only need a few. If not, I’ll start assigning some to–”
“I’ll go, Papa Smurf!” Smurfette raised her hand in the blue crowd. “I don’t mind, one bit. I’ve been wanting to out for a walk, anyways.”
“Me too.” Hefty said.
“Great. That settles it.” Papa Smurf stated. “Now, Smurfette and Hefty. Don’t forget to pick up your baskets for smurfberry picking.”
“Right.” Smurfette said, as she and Hefty walked together to get their wooden baskets.
“Come on, Smurfette. Let’s go this way.” Hefty said, walking down a dirty pathway. “I remember that the berries here. Should be ripe for the picking.”
“Sure.” Smurfette followed him.
A human teenage girl with brown hair was in the forest. She sat down on a wooden log. “I don’t know what to do?”
“Shhh.” Hefty quietly whispered to Smurfette.
“Why are you whispering, Hefty?”
“Because, there’s a human over there.” Hefty pointed at a distance from them.
“It’s a girl. She looks about our age. What would she be doing out here in the forest? Alone?”
“I don’t know. But, we must be quiet. So she doesn’t spot us. She might catch us. You never know what a person’s true intentions can be. At least, that is what Papa Smurf has warned us about. Remember, there are some bad humans in this world. Out to get us, like Gargamel.”
“I know. I understand what you mean by that.” Smurfette said. “But look at her. I’m not sensing any bad vibes from her. And she has a frown on her face.”
“How am I supposed to help Mom, when we’re out of money?” The girl said. “Especially, when she’s sick. I can’t afford any medicine to get at the market.”
“Hear that, Hefty?” Smurfette whispered. “She’s sad about her mother. We’ve got to help her. I’m going.”
“Wait, Smurfette. Where are you going?” Hefty pulled her wrist.
“Don’t you at least feel guilty? Or feel like you wish you could do more for someone in need?” Smurfette said, letting go of his hold.
“Hey, wait! I can’t just let you go alone–” He followed her.
The two smurfs stopped hiding behind the green smurfberry bushes and walked across to where the girl was sitting on the log. “Hello, there.” Smurfette said.
“Huh? Who said that? Am I hearing things? Or did I just hear someone talk?” The girl turned.
“Down here.” Smurfette repeated herself as she was standing next to Hefty.
“Oh. Who are you, two?” The girl tucked a small strand of her brown hair behind her ear. “Blue creatures?”
“We’re smurfs.” Smurfette said. She waved her hand around to her. “I’m Smurfette.”
“And I’m Smurfette’s friend. Hefty.” Hefty said.
“What’s your name?” Smurfette asked.
“Sandy.” The human girl said.
“We were both picking berries for our village, now. We don’t mean to be a bother to you. But we overheard you talking about your mother. What’s going on?” Smurfette stated in a polte way.
“Yes, my mom. The thing is that me and her live alone. My father is not physically present in my life anymore. I don’t know what happened to him? One day, he left. And never came back. My mom became sick, one day. She has been for a long while. I can’t afford to get medicine from the market. We don’t have anymore money since I had to use it all to get us food. And now, we don’t have anything to eat either. I feel like we have lost everything. I don’t know what to do?”
“Oh my, that sounds like a tough problem. You got there.” Hefty said.
“Don’t worry, Sandy.” Smurfette said. “I’m sure that our papa can help you.”
“Your papa?” Sandy asked.
“Yes. Papa Smurf.” Hefty said. “It’s what we call him. So, why don’t you come with us to our village? He can make potions and medicine. And has a smart intellect. He would be more than happy to help you. And you can get food too, while we’re there. We have plentyl of crops and vegetables. We wouldn’t be shy to share to someone in need.”
“Really?” Sandy said. “Thanks so much. Hefty and Smurfette. This would be such a big help.” She followed them to the Smurf Village.
