Work Text:
Mark Hoffman was sitting in his office. He had nothing to do so was looking through old paperwork and old case files. He was just trying to keep himself entertained until another detective burst open the door in a rush. He immediately looked over to the detective.
"Detective. I think you would want to see this" the other detective says and then leaves the office not long after.
Hoffman took his jacket, gun and flashlight with him and set off to see what was going on.
When he arrived at the scene, it was very obvious what had happened. The victim was hung by their neck with rope. It was a suicide.
"What might have caused this?" Hoffman asks as he circles the hanging body
"Hey, look at this." the detective grabs Hoffman's attention to a computer that seems to be still open. It was open on a conversation between the victim and their lawyer. "Phoenix Bailey. Apparently she was their lawyer. Seems like in this conversation that Phoenix put out false information and evidence against her own client. Which then inevitably caused her own case to lose." explained the detective
"Why would you cause your own case to deliberately lose? Did she not realise that it cause things like this to happen?" Hoffman asked, confused and almost disgusted by her actions.
Hoffman continued looking around before coming to a conclusion "I think we have found the main source of the problem here. I don't think any further investigation is needed." he states and leaves the scene.
He returns back to his office not too long after leaving the scene. Many thoughts are circulating his head. The main thing was 'Why?'. Why would someone be dishonest and go behind their own client?
Later that evening, he returned to his warehouse with an new idea of a trap and he knew exactly who it would be for. Phoenix Bailey. Hoffman began working hard planning out every aspect of how the trap with plan out.
----
Phoenix was just working some things out in her small office at home but heard a noise from her bedroom. She got up from her chair and went to investigate. She crept up the stairs carefully and opened the door.
However before being able to open the door fully open, someone in a pig mask jumped out in front of her, wrapped their arm around her neck and stabbed her with a needle, knocking her out.
----
When Phoenix woke up next, they were in a room made of rusted metal and wood. It was quite obvious it was abandoned as there were spider webs and dust everywhere. She started coughing because of the dust, got up from the floor and started looking around frantically in a panic trying to figure out where she is. "Where the fuck am I?!" she says, almost shouting.
However her attention was averted to a screen lighting up in front of her. A puppet appeared on the screen. She frowned with fear and confusion.
"Hello Phoenix. I want to play a game. Time after time, you go behind your clients backs and spread misinformation and lies about them, causing your side of the case to lose, deliberately. Every single time you think it's all fun and games. However, in one of those cases it's caused one of your clients to commit suicide. This was of /your/ doing. Now you have to pay the consequences and learn from your lesson. Above you are 3 pictures of clients from past trials. To escape, you have to remember what month and year those trials happened. This will unlock the three padlocks to the door. You have three minutes to complete this task. However, if you fail to complete, the door will be locked forever and you will die of dehydration and starvation. Live or die. Make your choice."
The screen then turned off and a timer on the wall started counting down.
In a frantic, Phoenix started investigating the pictures and trying her best to remember when the trials were. As soon as she remembered when the first one was she ran over to the door and put the password in. Her hands were shaking from stress and panic. After a bit of fiddling, the padlock unlocked and she took off the door and threw it on the floor. She glanced over to the timer. 2:15 left. She ran over to the second one. The trial was from ages ago. Jigsaw really knows how to be cruel. However it was still in her mind when it was, thankfully. She ran over to the door once again, unlocked the second padlock and threw it on the floor once again, this time in anger. She just wanted to get this bullshit over and done with. The panic and stress was really getting to her now. she could feel her heart pump so quickly in her chest, she thought she was going to pass out. 1:30 remaining. she ran over to the last picture. investigated it for a few seconds before returning back to the door. she thought she wasn't going to survive as the padlock took it's time to open. Her breath quickened even more. 'Come on!' she said out loud in anger but also fear. She finally unlocked it fully. she threw the last padlock on the floor and opened the door in a rush.
Before leaving the room, she caught her breath and had a sigh of relief. She eventually left the room and headed down the stairs that were in front of her, having a sigh of relief.
She ended up in an office. Well it was more of a warehouse than an office but an office was built into it. She looked around for a second but then saw someone in the warehouse with her. "Who's there?" she shouted over to the figure in the distance. The figure turned around to reveal themselves as none other than Mark Hoffman himself.
"I expected you would be down here soon enough." he chuckled a bit to himself
"So you were the asshole who put me in that fucking trap?! You're the one who works with Jigsaw!" She said, obviously angry at him
He began to walk over to her. "You put yourself in that situation by the way you acted with your own clients. I taught you a lesson. Did you learn?" he says, now only a meter between the two of them.
She nods her head in embarrassment.
He smirked slightly, "Good. Now I want to give you an opportunity to restart your life. Forget the person you were before. Join me." He suggested.
"You want me to go around murdering people?" She said, unsure with the idea.
"We don't kill people. We give them a choice of life or death, they make the decision for themselves." He explained. "So what do you choose?" he tilted his head slightly.
She thought about it for a second. She knew that she couldn't continue doing the work she was doing at the moment. The trap had definitely taught her a lesson and it was that what she was doing had ruined people's lives for good.
"I'll work with you." She eventually decided.
"I'm glad to hear it." He smiled slightly
