To pass beyond the Gate, is to loose oneself. You're leaving behind nothing, a deep void and in some cases, your whole existence is overwritten by the Universe's knowledge. Edward Elric never intended to cross and see the other side, his research about it stopping the second he will get his brother back.
But the Universe, the World, the Truth was not done with him yet.
