Chapter 1: Slight Difference

Chapter Text

Sunday was Chan's favorite day, not just because it was his day off work but because he got to see Jeongin. Jeongin, the smiling boy he'd see every Sunday when he went to his favorite juice bar. Jeongin, the boy who asked him every Sunday if he would see him again. Jeongin, the boy he was helplessly and hopelessly in love with, all because he started a conversation.

-----

Chan had started going to Juice Hut six months ago on a Sunday-- the smiling boy was working in the front, taking orders; Chan had started small talk with the boy between his orders. Juice Hut didn't get many people; Chan wasn't sure why but he didn't mind because after that fateful day six months ago, he ended up going back every Sunday, particularly because Jeongin had asked,

"Will I see you again?"

Chan hadn't said anything but offered a simple smile and said, "Goodbye."

He liked that many people didn't go because he got to talk to the boy for long periods as he waited for more people to walk in and take their orders.

Jeongin's question; "Will I see you again?" Soon became "See you next Sunday?" It became their thing. He would ask; Chan wouldn't answer.

-----

This Sunday was slightly different, and Chan didn't think anything of it but would later come to regret it.

Jeongin was standing behind the counter no different than any other day, currently taking an order with a bright smile on his face. Seeing Chan, his hand goes up ever so briefly to say hello. Chan offers a small smile before sitting at the table next to the window; he liked looking outside and watching life go by before him.

It isn't long before he feels a presence. Looking up, he's met with bright fox-like eyes. He can't stop the smile before it happens -- he knows he looks like a goofy bear,

"Innie! There you are," Chan says happily.

The bright-eyed boy takes a seat across from him, glancing out the window, before meeting Chan's gaze. Pushing a pineapple juice towards him, something Chan ordered every time. Chan can't help but notice the stray blonde strand of hair next to the younger's eye, something he wants to fix but doesn't. After looking at Jeongin, Chan realizes he has seen Jeongin in his uniform countless times -- it's the only thing he's seen him in, yet he still gets breathless nevertheless.

"Chan Hyung! You look pretty happy today~" Jeongin says, poking the older's arm with a finger. Chan feels himself shake his head, smile still present, taking a sip of the juice before giving his reply.

"Don't I usually look happy? Also, shouldn't you be behind that?" he asks, pointing his thumb behind him towards the juice bar.

Jeongin visibly huffs, leaning back into the chair, smoothing out his black apron with "JUICE HUT" written on it-- his eyes meeting Chan's again after looking at the bar. A slight smirk on his adorable features.

"Hyung, you know I'm on break, right?" he asks the older.

"Break? I thought your break was later," Chan mutters, feeling dumb.

Jeongin giggles softly, watching the other's confused expression envelope his face.

"No, I asked for an earlier break. I have something to do today, so I can only talk to you for a bit," Jeongin says matter-of-factly.

"I see... well, I don't have much to say today except that work has been wearing me out every day. My boss has been on me about writing a new song for some idol, but I can't come up with anything lately. I know I can't just give up, so I suppose I came today to ask for help. If you have any suggestions, that is," Chan manages to get out in one go.

Jeongin stares at him wide-eyed, not saying anything. It isn't long before Chan realizes what he said and blushes out of embarrassment. He must have sounded rude like he only came for work and nothing more.

"If you have anything else you want to talk about, that's great! Work gets boring, and spending time with you is fun -- why waste it with work talk," Chan says quickly, averting his gaze from the younger towards anything else.

Jeongin bursts out in a series of soft laughter-- when Chan looks at him, he sees the red face filled with happiness. After a few seconds, Jeongin finally catches his breath,

"Hyung, it's okay. I honestly didn't know what to say; I was thinking. The only thing I can say is-- to go with what your heart is saying. If you feel anger, why not write an angry song? Happy, a happy song? Maybe find something that makes you feel what it is you may be feeling and focus on it in your song," Jeongin ends with a smile before quickly adding,

"Of course, do whatever you think that is; I'm no cool songwriter like Hyung is, haha," Jeongin flushes.

Chan chuckles softly, shaking his head at the shy boy, "I think you've reiterated why I'm a songwriter and do what I do. I appreciate that."

Jeongin nods shyly before looking at the digital watch on his wrist; frowning, he glances at Chan apologetically.

"Hyung, my break is almost up. It was nice talking to you again, don't worry about the drink. I paid for it," Jeongin stands up, "See you next Sunday?" Smiling, already knowing the answer, before walking away with a tiny wave.

Chan sighs, running a hand through his thick curly brown hair, standing up from his seat, quickly finishing the fruit drink and throwing the clear cup away. He would have to think more about what Jeongin had said because the answer to what he asked was closer than he thought. He looks back towards the counter, making eye contact with the blonde-haired boy, waving before walking out the door.

If Chan had asked what Jeongin had to do, then maybe he wouldn't have thought anything of the slight difference of the Sunday and regretted it later.
