The Coin Toss

Work Text:

“A coin toss.”

“Yes.”

“Yer tellin’ me that you, Sakusa Kiyoomi, let the flip of a coin determine yer whole future?” Atsumu asks, flabbergasted.

“I already said yes.” the spiker reiterates. “The Adlers and Jackals are both very strong teams. I knew my career was in safe hands either way.“

“And nothing else influenced your decision.” The blonde asks the question as a statement, obviously prying for more information.

Kiyoomi raises his eyebrows. “What else would I need to consider?”

“C’mon, Omi,” the setter presses. “Ya can’t expect me to believe that yer whole life revolves around volleyball alone. What about yer friends?”

“Aside from my cousin, I don’t have really have any friends.” Atsumu frowns at his colleague, who doesn’t seem phased in the slightest as he continues. “And even so, I don’t need to be in close proximity to someone to stay connected. A text or phone call will do just fine.”

“Yeah but—” Atsumu hesitates before he asks the next question. “—what about yer love life? D’ya got someone special here in Osaka?”

“Like I said, the only determining factor in my choice was the coin flip. Nothing else.”

Atsumu perks up at the information. Kiyoomi’s single. Good to know. “So you believe in fate then?”

“Don’t be preposterous,” the raven scoffs.

Atsumu furrows his brows. “So ya left yer whole future up to fate when ya don’t even believe in the concept?”

“Enough with the coin toss, Miya!” Kiyoomi shouts. “It was literally jus a means to an end.”

Atsumu isn’t sure if he believes in fate himself, but he does believe in opportunities. And before him stands a tall, gorgeous, doe-eyed opportunity. He takes a penny out of his wallet. “Alright, Omi. Heads means yes, and tails means no.”

The paler man purses his lips. “What are you going on about?”

“Ya said you don’t believe in fate, right? So it doesn’t matter what it lands on really. But ya gotta honor the decision of the coin no matter what. Okay?”

Kiyoomi’s curiosity appears to get the better of him as he sighs. “Fine. Flip the damn coin.”

Atsumu tosses the penny in the air, eying it carefully as gravity begins its descent. He snatches it mid-air and flips it over onto his wrist, hoping for a positive result. “Guess it’s my lucky day!” Atsumu smiles as he shows the heads-up coin to Kiyoomi. “I get to go on a coffee date with my favorite wing-spiker.”

“Why on Earth would you want to do that?” Kiyoomi asks frankly.

Atsumu’s mouth speaks before he can think as he blurts out, “Because I like ya,” his ears burning from embarrassment.

A dark shade of pink dusts Kiyoomi’s cheeks. “You don’t know me well enough to know that,” he shies away from the setter.

“Guess ya gotta prove me wrong then,” he says as he pulls out his wallet, placing the coin back between the folds. “C’mon, Omi. Let me take ya out.”

Kiyoomi reluctantly agrees.

One year later, Atsumu lies awake in bed as a tall, gorgeous, doe-eyed man stirs next to him. He removes the familiar coin from his wallet. “Heads means yes, tails means no,” he mutters to himself as he flips the penny.

The corner of his lip tilts upward as it lands on heads once again. “Hey, Omi?” he whispers to his drowsy partner.

Kiyoomi’s eyes flutter open. “What is it, Atsu?” he asks with a sleepy smile.

“I think I do believe in fate.” he admits, as he brushes a wayward curl behind his boyfriend’s ear.

“What makes you say that?” Kiyoomi asks curiously.

Atsumu turns to the bedside table and pulls out a small velvet box, opening it to reveal a sparkling gold band. “Omi, will ya marry me?” he asks with a hopeful expression.

Thankfully Kiyoomi didn’t have to flip a coin for his answer, though Atsumu’s convinced it would’ve worked out in his favor either way.
