Work Text:

It’s their third year at Karasuno and Kageyama decides it’s finally time to confess his feelings to Hinata. On Valentine’s Day, he has flowers delivered to Hinata’s house.

“Mama, there’s a delivery man at the door!” Hinata Natsu calls from the living room. She knows not to answer the door for strangers, but that doesn’t stop her from curiously peeking out the window.

The maternal redhead answers the door, receives the delivery and thanks the courier. “How lovely! Someone sent flowers.”

At that moment, Hinata Shoyo pokes his head around the corner. “Who was that, mom?”

“Mama got flowers!” Natsu exclaims.

“Actually, I’m not sure who these are for,” she replies. “Oh look! Here’s a note.” She proceeds to read the card which simply says ‘To: Hinata’ on the outside and ‘hope you like flowers’ on the inside. “That’s strange. There’s no signature either.”

“Huh. I wonder who they’re from?” Shoyo inquires.

“And who they’re for?” Natsu questions.

“I don’t know, kids. Maybe whoever sent them will reach out soon. Until then, it’s a mystery.”

Kageyama is freaking out the next morning, after hardly getting any sleep. He has zero missed calls or texts for Hinata, and he’s starting to get worried. Kageyama was almost positive that Hinata would reciprocate his feelings, otherwise he never would have sent the flowers. But what if he had misconstrued the situation? He pulls his phone to send a text.

To: Boke
>>>meet me at the club room before class
From: Boke
>>>ok bossy-yama

Kageyama gets to the club room first and unlocks the door. He fiddles with his phone for a few minutes when Hinata finally walks through the door.

“Morning, yama!”

Kageyama will never understand how one person can have so much positive energy so early. “Morning…”

“So, wanna work on some receiving drills with me?” Hinata inquires and he juggles his attention between Kageyama and the volleyball he’s currently passing to himself.

Kageyama’s about to accept the invitation when he remembers why they’re meeting up in the first place. “Yeah, sure. In a minute.” He gathers up the courage to ask, “Did you have a good Valentine’s Day?”

Hinata continues bumping the ball while his eyes follow it. “Uh, yeah, I guess.”

‘I guess’? Kageyama’s doubt begins to transform into annoyance. Is Shoyo really not going to acknowledge the gift? Unless he never got the flowers…Kageyama grabs his phone and opens his emails. Sure enough, there’s a confirmation email with a photo from delivery man showing that Hinata’s mom carried them into the house herself. So what the hell?

“What about you?” Hinata asks. “Any new members of the crazy-yama fan club confess their undying love to you?”

Kageyama snickers. “Just a few.” Hinata always makes a point to mention Kageyama’s admirers whenever given the chance. Kageyama likes to think it’s due to jealousy, though Hinata never seems too bothered by it. “But I shut them all down.”

Hinata stops hitting the ball and looks over at Kageyama in disbelief. “So what’s a girl gotta do to get a date with the Kageyama? It seems like the entire school is fawning over you and you’re really not interested in any of them?”

“They’re just not my type.” Kageyama’s getting a little more worried by the minute. Does Hinata really not know that he’s…

Hinata tilts his head. “So what is your type then?”

“Apparently idiots that don’t understand what flowers mean,” the setter blurts out.

“What?”

“Nothing.” Kageyama grabs his bag and walks towards the door. “I gotta go.”

“What the heck was that about?” Hinata says to himself aloud.

“Hinata? Is that you?” A squeaky voice calls from outside the club room. The volleyball club’s manager walks in shortly after. “What are you doing here?”

“Hiya, Yachi!” Hinata instantly perks back up. “Kageyama asked me to meet him here, but he just left. Actually, I’m still not sure what he wanted. He just started asking me about my Valentine’s Day and I guess the conversation got away.”

Yachi furrows a questioning brow. “So Kageyama wanted to meet you here just to ask you about your Valentine’s Day?”

“I’m sure that’s wasn’t the real reason.”

“Well, what else did you talk about?”

Hinata explains the conversation to Yachi in detail. “…And then he said his type was ‘idiots that don’t understand what flowers…’” he trails off, eyes widening. “Oh my god.”

“I’m so lost.” Yachi says, eyes glossed over.

“Sorry, Yachi!” Hinata apologizes as he grabs his bag and runs out the door and flies down the stairs and around the corner, surprised to see Kageyama sitting on the ground, back against the building. “Kageyama!”

Kageyama doesn’t vocalize a response, but the narrowed look in his eyes speaks volumes.

Hinata plops down next to him. “So the strangest thing happened yesterday.” Kageyama’s expression changes from slightly annoyed to intrigued. “Flowers arrived at my house addressed to ‘Hinata’, but we don’t know who they came from.”

Kageyama’s eyes widen and shift in their sockets. Had he really not signed the card?

Hinata continues. “Natsu’s convinced they were for her. What do you think, yama? Who did you intend to be the recipient of those flowers?”

“Well, I…”

Kageyama words are cut off by supple lips enveloping his own. His body tenses up and eyes widen at the sudden contact, but he quickly relaxes into the kiss, reaching a hand up to cup the ginger’s cheek. Hinata smiles against Kageyama’s lips. “Gotcha.”

Kageyama pulls away, looking confused. “What do you mean, ‘gotcha’? You didn’t ‘get’ anything. I’m the one that sent the flowers. If anything, I’m the one that got you with my confession.”

“Yeah, but you made me work for it! First you didn’t specify which Hinata they were for, then you didn’t even sign the damn card! And ‘hope you like flowers’? How is that a confession?”

“It worked didn’t it?”

Hinata leans his head in forcefully, crashing his forehead against Kageyama’s. “You’re such a dumbass.”

Kageyama smiles and steals a kiss of his own. “Hey, dumbass, that’s my line.”

“Whatever, kissy-yama.”
