Chapter Text
Y/n huffed as she ran across the restaurant, holding two trays of food for table nine she dodged tables and whatnot, placing the trays down for a havotic family with their children running ramped. She pulled on her gloves tighter and smiled at the family.
“Here you go.”
She told them breathlessly as the children ripped into their food.
“Thank you so much.”
The wife told her and the husband grunted at Y/n as a silent thanks as he bit into his burger. Y/n nodded with a sigh as another bell rang at the counter.
“Order to table 15!”
The chef called from behind the counter, placing a tray onto the counter after dinging the bell a couple of times.
Y/n ran over, picking up the tray and running to deliver it as more trays of food exploded out of the kitchen from the lunch rush they were in.
“Doing good Y/n!”
The chef called, shoving out another tray from the small window from the kitchen to the counter.
“Thanks George.”
Y/n replied and took the tray before he could ring the bell.
She took the tray to the table it belonged to and sighed.
“Thank you for waiting patiently.”
She told the ladies there and one of them waved it off.
“No problem! We’ve watched you run around this place and know how tough it is to be the only server during a lunch rush.”
One of the girls replied, an obvious New York accent in her voice as her friend nodded.
“Yeah! You're doing great.”
She agreed and Y/n smiled sweetly before the bell rang for another order. Y/n nodded at them and ran towards the counter, picking up the tray as the cashier yawned.
“Y/n could you cover me? I need to get some fresh air.”
She told her and Y/n looked at her.
“Maddie I’m sort of tangled up right now!”
She exclaimed but Maddie was already walking towards the door. Y/n growled in frustration, this was going to be a long day.

By the time the lunch rush was over Y/n was sitting at a barstool at the counter as George wiped the counter off all the crumbs.
“I can’t believe Maddie just up and left.”
George huffed and Y/n nodded.
“I know! And she does this all the time, thinking I can cover for her when I’m the only waitress!”
George huffed.
“Well if she keeps doing this she’ll get fired.”
He replied and Y/n nodded in agreement. Then suddenly the front door bursts open and two young and cheerful voices fill the room.
“Y/n!!”
Y/n turned to see two excited little boys run over to her, their smiles brightening her mood.
“Theo! Oliver!”
She exclaimed and jumped off the bar stool to give both boys a hug. They giggled in her embrace and she ruffled their hair. George smiled at this and looked at Y/n.
“You three always warm my heart.”
He commented and both boys looked at George.
“Hi George!”
They exclaimed and George smiled at them and waved in greeting.
Y/n led the boys to one of the tables and sat them down.
“How was school today kiddos?”
She asked and Theo sighed.
“Destiny Smith keeps chasing me trying to give me flowers.”
He whined and Oliver laughed at him. Y/n rolled her eyes and ruffled Theo’s hair.
“Good job Theo. Don’t want you to date this early.”
She commented and both boys giggled. After getting both boys settled with some paper and crayons Y/n walked back over to the counter and saw Maddie walk back into the restaurant.
“I see you decided to come back.”
Y/n grumbled and Maddie rolled her eyes at her.
“I see you still have no parents.”
She retorted and Y/n balled up her fists.
“You can’t just keep walking out and expect me to give out orders and take them!”
She exclaimed and Maddie rolled her eyes again.
“So the multitalented Y/n can work double shifts, take care of her younger brothers and keep social workers off her back but she can’t wait tables and take orders?”
Maddie replied, her eyes narrowing at each word she said. Y/n was about to reply when a couple came into the restaurant and walked up to the cashier.
Maddie and Y/n glared at each other before Maddie walked up to them and started taking their orders.
Y/n walked away towards the window to the kitchen to see George poking his head out to look at her.
“I don’t even know how she got hired.”
Y/n shrugged at his words as he popped his head back into the kitchen and started working on the couple’s orders.

George locked up the restaurant as Y/n took Theo and Oliver’s hands.
“See you tomorrow Y/n!”
George called out to them as Y/n waved back at him and her and her brothers started walking down the sidewalk. Even at ten at night New York was bustling, the sidewalk was crowded and so was the street.
“Come on boys.”
Y/n ushered as they made their way to their apartment complex. They walked in to see an older lady at the front desk, she nodded at them slightly and looked back at her newspaper. Y/n nodded back and they took the elevator, riding it all the way up to their floor.
“Y/n can we go see Ms. Carol?”
Oliver asked excitedly and Y/n shook her head.
“Sorry Ollie. I think both Ms.Carol and April are asleep by now. It’s kind of late.”
She told him and Oliver pouted, sticking his bottom lip out.
“Maybe we’ll go see them tomorrow. Okay?”
Y/n reassured and Oliver nodded. They reached their apartment door and Y/n pulled out her keys, she unlocked the door and Theo and Oliver ran in, their giggling laughter making Y/n smile.
“Okay come on let’s get ready for bed.” She told them, ushering them to their room.
“But I’m not tired!”
Theo exclaimed as he jumped on his bed.
“If you guys get ready for bed without any hassle then I might read you a bedtime story.”
Y/n told them and with that they giggled and gave no resistance for bed, changing to their pjs, brushing their teeth and then cuddling up with Y/n on Oliver’s bed with a story book.
Y/n read the story to them, feeling them cuddle into her and seeing their eyes droop sleepily.
By the end of the book both boys were drifting off to sleep. Y/n closed the book, standing up and tucking Oliver into his bed as she picked Theo up and placed him in his bed, tucking him in and shutting off the light in the room, leaving the night light on.
Y/n left the room, keeping the door cracked open before letting out an exhausted sigh.
She walked to her room, and shut her door, she threw off her shoes and flopped into her bed. She laid there for a moment, feeling the exhaustion of the day hit her like a train.
Y/n then pulled off one of her gloves, looking at her bare hand before placing it on her nightstand.
Immediately ice started spreading from the palm of her hand and onto the nightstand.
Y/n ripped her hand away and curled up into a ball.
“I’m trying mom, dad. I really am.”
She muttered as her eyelids drooped, drifting off into a dreamless sleep.
