A Debt Unpaid

Summary:

Amélie and Lena have lived together in Paris for three years. They adore their tiny flat, but dream of escaping city life and moving to the countryside. When at last an unexpected opportunity presents itself, the couple wastes no time, but the old home they’ve inherited has a secret; one that may turn their dreams to nightmares.

Notes:

I wrote this actual years ago and wanted to post it! It’s a work in progress, but I wanna give writing a try :)

Chapter 1: Movin’ Out

Chapter Text

The news of Amélie's uncle's death did not reach her until 6 days after he had passed. She thought perhaps she ought to have been saddened to hear it; he was fairly young, only in his forties, and in good health. However, she found herself feeling quite indifferent. Their relationship was never very significant to either individual and after he moved to the countryside, he made almost no efforts to engage his family. Single and wealthy, her uncle holed himself away in an old, dilapidated house somewhat far from Paris where he had previously lived. With no children to inherit his wealth or possessions, his house was to be sold away.

Pushing open the door to her apartment, she called out to Lena.

“My uncle Emmanuel died.”

A squeak and the sound of stumbling feet echoed from their bedroom.

“Well hello to you too, love,” Lena remarked.

She shuffled out of their door in a tank top and sweats, arms outstretched towards her partner. Amélie rested her head atop Lena’s and took in a deep breath, the smell of Lena more familiar and comforting than anything. Muffled words from Lena’s mouth warmed Amélie’s chest and she smiled.

“Hm?”

Lena pulled her head back.

“I’m sorry about your uncle,” she said with a frown. “I don’t think you’ve ever mentioned him.”

Amélie sighed, looking away from Lena and out into the room.

”No, I haven’t. It is sad, he had no one… He’s left behind his house in the country.”

Immediately Lena’s eyes widened, her mouth opening slightly as Amélie looked back down at her.

“Right, okay… are you suggesting what I think you are?” Lena asked skeptically.

Amélie failed to resist the small smirk that twisted its way onto her face as she nodded down at Lena’s hopeful face.

Pushing back from Amélie, Lena threw her arms in the air and shouted.
“This is too much! You’ve got to be kidding!”

Amélie simply smiled and grabbed her hands,

“He has no relatives besides my father, and he does not need the house.”

Lena had stopped listening and pulled Amélie by her arm toward their room as she laughed to herself.

“At this point, the house is so old that I know it won’t sell and my father would much rather not deal with it...” Amélie further explained, but her words fell on deaf ears.

“This is not real! Like, this is seriously like something from a film!”

Amélie allowed herself to be thrown onto the bed, Lena’s weak arms desperately trying to pull her up to their pillows. Lena wound her arms around Amélie’s waist and squeezed, drawing out a breathless laugh.

“There is no guarantee that this is going to work, but I think it’s definitely possible for us,” Amélie added.

Lena laughed again and snuggled her head onto Amélie’s shoulder.

She hummed and smiled, already wondering how they’d manage cleaning the house by themselves…
