25 - A kiss that's an accident

Work Text:

“Maybe we could-”

Miles stifles a groan, but allows himself an eye roll. “Shut up , Wright. And stop moving so much.”

Their bodies were pressed together in the small space. The only thing stopping them from being chest to chest was that Miles had positioned himself right next to the door so he could listen for any sounds in the hallway.

“I just don’t think we need to hide in here, the janitor already did his rounds.” Phoenix’s breath is just at his ear. Miles suppresses a shiver.

“But we don’t know if he’ll come back.”

“It’s an office building, how much could they have to clean?”

You clean your toilet three times a-” Miles cuts himself off with a sigh, realizing he’s been baited into an argument once again. “Be quiet.”

“No, I really think-”

Miles hears it then, heavy footfalls from the end of the hallway. A heavy sigh, the bump of a mop bucket against the wall.

Shh.” Miles holds up a hand firmly.

“Shit,” comes a voice, “you gotta be fucking kidding me.”

The footsteps come and go over the next few minutes, accompanied by a plethora of curses and statements that he “didn’t get paid enough for this shit.”

You and me both , Miles thinks glumly.

For a long moment neither of them move, speak, breathe. Not until the footsteps recede to the elevator at the other end of the corridor. When the ding signals that it’s gone to another floor, Miles breathes a sigh of relief.

Miles lets himself relax, his hands falling away.

He starts to turn back to his companion.

“We- mrph-” Miles gets cut off by the feeling of lips on his.

The pressure is gone as fast as it came.

In the dim light, he can see Phoenix staring at him, wide-eyed.

“Sorry, I didn’t think-”

“Apologies, I-”

“I um… I didn’t think we were that close.” Phoenix laughs nervously. If there was room, Miles is sure he would be scratching the back of his neck.

“Nor did I…”

“You were… you were saying?”

Miles clears his throat. “I believe… we can leave now.”

Phoenix nods. “Right, right. Sounds good.”

Finally, they could investigate.

They decided to take it room by room, unsure what exactly they were looking for. But the company that employed both the victim and defendant in their current case, and a number of witnesses, had been so uncooperative so far that this secret operation had seemingly been the only option.

The employee desks were the obvious first choices to search, probably followed by the breakroom and then the locker room for the office gym. Since Phoenix seemed to find key cards like they appeared from thin air, Miles wasn’t worried about access.

“And you’re sure the security office won’t hold anything of substance?” Miles asks.

Phoenix shakes his head. “The cameras have been out since last month, apparently. Upper management never wanted to fix them. They didn’t see a reason to.”

“How grand…”

They move through the office in silence.

“Hey… Edgeworth?”

“What, Wright?”

“About that kiss-”

Miles stops. He wants to call it a kiss? That measly thing?

“-I just wanted to say I’m sorry about it, okay? I shouldn’t have been leaning so close like that. I don’t want you to be mad at me or-”

“Do you really think I’m that small-minded? Or… prudish? Besides,” Miles waves him off, “it was barely anything. I’ve kissed party guests with more force.”

“Oh?” The man sounds closer, but Miles pays him no mind.

“Unless that’s the extent of all of your kisses. If it is, I feel sorry for you. If you’re going to apologize, at least make it a real one-”

Miles turns around, only to be confronted by Phoenix just behind him. The man wraps a hand behind Miles’ head, pulling him in.

And he kisses him, right there in the office. Phoenix walks Miles backward to the water cooler. It’s cool against his back, as Phoenix is warm against his front, front, front.

Miles gasps, lips parting. He feels Phoenix’s tongue lick across his teeth. He practically shoves himself down his throat.

By the time Phoenix pulls back, they’re both gasping for air.

“Sorry about that.” Phoenix rasps.

Miles doesn’t answer him, too busy staring at his mouth.

“I’m going to go check the victim’s desk.” Phoenix finally says.

Miles stands there, hand on his lips, watching him walk away.

He blinks out of it a few seconds too late. “Now, wait a minute!”
