He reached for her hand, giving it a gentle squeeze as she voiced her anxiety of stepping out on stage to give a speech, invited under the headline Law Enforcement, Intelligence and Equality. “Hey,” he made her look at him, “You’ve got this, you know you do.”
There was a hint of a smile, a thankfulness. She leaned into him, careful not to ruin the makeup and the carefully placed hair. “I’m sure you were a motivational speaker in a past life.”
He chuckled, “Let’s hope I still have my motivational skills in this life,” They’d fallen into a steady routine of supporting each other, being there, ready for whatever outcome was thrown at them. “People need to hear from women like you, Isobel. They need to know the good, the bad and the ugly from a woman who has put herself through it for the safety of others.”
He was talking about Antonio Vargas, David Owen, Jake Reed, Valerie Caldwell.
“I know,” Isobel managed, she was thinking about the same people, get the bad out the way first, the bad apples, the ugly view of society sometimes and end on the positives. “Are you staying until the end?”
“Of course.”
The adrenaline kept Isobel upright as she moved off the stage and straight into his arms. Free Falling for just a split second knowing he would catch her. “That’s my speech quota for the year.”
Stephen hummed, letting her have her moment, “Wanna get out of here?”
“God, yes,” Her words were met with a second kiss of her hand, “Let go home, where we can celebrate with a drink and you can kiss me properly.”
He wasn’t ever going to say no to that.
