Work Text:

The lighthouse stood tall against the twilight sky, casting a warm glow over the rugged cliffs of Arcadia Bay. Max Caulfield and Chloe Price sat on the grassy knoll, their feet dangling over the edge as the waves crashed rhythmically against the rocks below.

Max adjusted her camera, snapping a picture of the horizon where the sun was just beginning to set. The colors of the sky painted a masterpiece of oranges, pinks, and purples, blending into the darkening blue. She lowered her camera and turned to Chloe, who was leaning back on her hands, staring out at the sea.

“You always know the best places,” Max said, nudging Chloe gently with her shoulder.

Chloe smirked, her blue hair catching the breeze. “It’s a talent,” she replied. “But it’s not the place, Max. It’s the company.”

Max felt a warmth spread through her chest. Moments like these were rare, and she cherished every second. They had faced so much together – time travel, secrets, and the constant threat looming over Arcadia Bay. But here, for a brief moment, they could forget all that and just be themselves.

Chloe turned to look at Max, her expression softening. “Do you ever think about the future, Max? Like, what we could do once all this craziness is over?”

Max smiled, tucking a strand of her brown hair behind her ear. “All the time. I think about traveling the world with my camera, capturing moments like this. And you?”

Chloe’s eyes sparkled with excitement. “Road trip across the country in my truck, music blasting, just living life to the fullest. And of course, you’d be right there with me.”

Max felt her heart skip a beat. She reached out and took Chloe’s hand, intertwining their fingers. “I’d like that. A lot.”

They sat in comfortable silence for a while, the sound of the waves and the distant cries of seagulls filling the air. Max glanced at Chloe, her mind racing with the possibilities of what their future could hold. No matter what challenges they faced, she knew they could get through it together.

“Hey, Chloe?” Max said softly, breaking the silence.

“Yeah?”

“Thanks for always being there for me. I know things haven’t been easy, but… I can’t imagine my life without you.”

Chloe squeezed Max’s hand, her grip firm and reassuring. “Same here, Max. We’ll get through this. And when we do, the world better watch out, because we’re gonna take it by storm.”

Max chuckled, feeling a sense of hope and determination swell within her. The sun dipped below the horizon, casting the world in a dusky glow. Together, they watched as the first stars began to twinkle in the sky, a silent promise of the countless adventures that awaited them.

As the sky deepened into night, the stars multiplied, dotting the inky canvas with shimmering specks of light. Chloe laid back on the grass, her hands behind her head, and sighed contentedly. Max followed suit, lying next to her, their shoulders touching.

“Remember when we were kids, and we’d come up here to look at the stars?” Chloe asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

Max nodded, a smile tugging at her lips. “Yeah, we used to make up stories about the constellations. You always had the best ones.”

Chloe chuckled. “I was such a nerd.”

Max turned her head to look at Chloe, the pale moonlight casting a soft glow on her features. “You still are,” she teased.

“Hey!” Chloe protested, but her grin gave her away. “Takes one to know one, Caulfield.”

Max laughed, the sound light and carefree. She hadn’t felt this relaxed in a long time. “Fair enough.”

They lay there for a while, letting the cool night air wash over them, the worries of the world momentarily forgotten. Max closed her eyes, the steady rhythm of Chloe’s breathing beside her a soothing lullaby.

Suddenly, Chloe sat up, breaking the tranquility. “I almost forgot,” she said, digging into her jacket pocket. She pulled out a small, crumpled piece of paper and handed it to Max.

Max sat up and unfolded the paper, her curiosity piqued. It was a rough sketch of a house, complete with a wrap-around porch and a large, lush garden. In the corner, there was a small note in Chloe’s messy handwriting: Our future home?

Max felt tears prick at the corners of her eyes. She looked at Chloe, who was watching her nervously, waiting for a reaction. “Chloe, this is beautiful,” Max said, her voice thick with emotion. “You really think we could have this?”

Chloe shrugged, trying to play it cool, but there was a glimmer of hope in her eyes. “Why not? We deserve it, Max. After everything we’ve been through… we deserve a place that’s just ours. A place where we can be happy.”

Max hugged the sketch to her chest, overwhelmed by the gesture. “I love it,” she said sincerely. “And I love you.”

Chloe’s face lit up with a smile that could rival the sun. “I love you too, Max. More than anything.”

They leaned in, their foreheads touching, and for a moment, it felt like the world had paused just for them. Max closed her eyes, savoring the closeness, the promise of a future they would build together.

“Let’s make a pact,” Chloe said, pulling back slightly. “No matter what happens, we fight for this. For us.”

Max nodded, determination shining in her eyes. “Deal.”

They sealed their promise with a kiss, a silent vow under the stars. As they pulled away, Max felt a renewed sense of purpose. She knew there would be challenges ahead, but with Chloe by her side, she was ready to face anything.

Hand in hand, they stood up, ready to head back to the real world. But this time, they carried with them the hope of a brighter tomorrow and the unbreakable bond that would guide them through whatever lay ahead.

Together, they walked down the path from the lighthouse, the future stretching out before them like an open road. And for the first time, they were excited to see where it would lead.

---

The descent from the lighthouse was peaceful, the soft rustling of leaves and the distant crash of waves the only sounds accompanying them. Max felt a sense of contentment settle over her as they walked, her hand securely in Chloe's. The town of Arcadia Bay lay below, its lights twinkling like the stars above.

As they reached the bottom of the hill, Chloe turned to Max with a mischievous grin. "Hey, wanna grab some late-night snacks at Two Whales? I'm in the mood for some greasy diner food."

Max laughed, shaking her head. "You never change, do you?"

Chloe shrugged playfully. "What can I say? The heart wants what it wants."

They made their way to Chloe's truck, the old vehicle rumbling to life as Chloe turned the key. The drive to the diner was short, and soon enough, they were walking into the familiar, comforting atmosphere of Two Whales. The neon sign buzzed softly, casting a warm glow over the parking lot.

Inside, the diner was nearly empty, save for a couple of late-night patrons and Joyce behind the counter, wiping down surfaces with practiced ease. She looked up as the door chimed, a smile spreading across her face when she saw them.

"Well, look who decided to grace us with their presence," Joyce teased, setting aside her cloth. "What brings you two here at this hour?"

"Craving your world-famous pancakes, Mom," Chloe said with a grin, sliding into a booth. Max followed, settling in beside her.

Joyce chuckled, shaking her head. "Always the same with you, Chloe. I'll get right on it." She turned to Max, her expression softening. "And for you, Max?"

Max smiled warmly. "Just a cup of coffee, please. Black."

"Coming right up," Joyce said, heading to the kitchen.

Max glanced around the diner, memories flooding back. This place had always been a safe haven, a constant in the ever-changing chaos of their lives. She looked at Chloe, who was tapping her fingers on the table, humming a tune under her breath.

"You seem happy," Max observed, reaching out to still Chloe's restless fingers.

Chloe looked up, her blue eyes sparkling. "I am. Tonight feels... different. Like we're finally moving forward, you know?"

Max nodded, understanding exactly what she meant. The weight of the past weeks seemed to lift, replaced by a sense of hope and anticipation. "Yeah, I feel it too."

Their conversation was interrupted by Joyce returning with their order. She set a plate of pancakes in front of Chloe and a steaming cup of coffee before Max. "Enjoy, you two."

As they dug into their late-night meal, the conversation flowed easily, filled with laughter and shared dreams. They talked about everything and nothing, the future, their plans, and the life they wanted to build together.

Max found herself daydreaming about that house Chloe had sketched. She imagined them fixing it up together, painting the walls, planting a garden. She pictured lazy Sunday mornings on the porch, wrapped in a blanket with Chloe, watching the world wake up. It was a simple dream, but one that filled her with warmth and determination.

When they finally left the diner, the sky was beginning to lighten with the first hints of dawn. Chloe drove them back to her house, the truck's engine purring softly in the early morning quiet.

They climbed the stairs to Chloe's room, exhaustion starting to settle in. Max kicked off her shoes and flopped onto the bed, sighing contentedly. Chloe joined her, wrapping an arm around her waist and pulling her close.

As they lay there, tangled in each other's embrace, Max felt a sense of rightness, as if all the pieces of her life had finally fallen into place. She knew there would be more challenges ahead, but with Chloe by her side, she felt ready to face them.

"Goodnight, Max," Chloe murmured, her voice thick with sleep.

"Goodnight, Chloe," Max replied, pressing a gentle kiss to her forehead.

In the quiet of Chloe's room, with the first rays of dawn peeking through the curtains, Max drifted off to sleep, a smile on her lips and hope in her heart. The future was theirs, and she couldn't wait to see what it held.
