It’ll be easy, Miranda silently told herself as she stared down at the street below. People were walking about, some lost in conversation, some scrolling on their phones. Nobody had noticed her on the roof four floors up, her toes over the edge.
It’ll be easy, she told herself again, heart hammering in her chest. One step forward, that’s it.
Her hands trembled, eyes burning with the tears she was trying so hard to keep in. This wasn’t how she wanted to die.
One step forward. Just don’t think about the fall.
The gun to her back dug into her, stopping her turning away. A gruff voice spoke behind her.
“Jump.”
Miranda’s mind was working in overdrive. If she fell, there was an extremely small chance of survival. If she refused, he’d shoot her and make sure she was dead.
It’ll be easy, she told herself again, taking a shuddering breath. One step forward and it’ll be over. One step forward and you’ll be safe.
She didn’t want to do this, but she had no choice.
Before she could stop herself, before her fear could get the better of her, she screwed her eyes shut and stepped off the edge.
