Work Text:
Yoona stands backstage at the annual awards show, the bustling noise of crew members and other actors barely registering in her mind. Her eyes scan the crowd, her heart pounding with an anxious anticipation she can’t quite shake. She has been here many times before, but this year feels different. This year, Junho would be here too.
Junho, with his charismatic smile and undeniable stage presence, is always the star of the show. Tonight, he is the recipient of a major award, and Yoona can’t help but feel a mix of pride and melancholy. They broke up six months ago, a mutual decision driven by their demanding schedules and the unrelenting pressure of their celebrity lives. Yet, seeing him again after so long is like reopening a wound that has barely begun to heal.
As she makes her way to her seat, Yoona catches sight of Junho on stage, accepting his award with the grace and charm that has always captivated her. He steps up to the microphone, the spotlight highlighting his features, making him look even more handsome.
"Thank you all so much for this incredible honor," Junho begins, his voice steady but filled with emotion. "I want to thank my fans for their unwavering support and my team for their hard work and dedication. Without you, none of this would be possible."
He pauses, glancing around the room before his eyes settle somewhere in the distance. "There's also someone special I want to thank," he continues, his voice softening. "Someone who has always supported me from the sidelines, who believed in me even when times were tough."
Yoona feels a pang in her chest, knowing those words are meant for her. She blinks back tears, her emotions a whirlwind of pride, sadness, and longing. She knows there are cameras everywhere—fans' phones, professional photographers, and cameramen covering the event. Yoona forces herself to smile, maintaining her composure for the world to see, even though inside she is anything but calm.
"Thank you for always believing in me," Junho says, his eyes scanning the audience but lingering just a moment longer where Yoona is seated. "Your support has meant everything."
The audience erupts in applause, but Yoona barely notices, her mind fixated on Junho's words. She forces herself to smile, aware of the cameras capturing every moment, while inside, her heart aches with the weight of their shared history.
After the ceremony, the afterparty buzzes with laughter, music, and celebratory conversations. Despite the festive atmosphere, Yoona feels a growing sense of isolation. She excuses herself from the crowd, seeking solace on a secluded balcony. The cool night air provides a welcome relief from the stuffy venue, offering a moment of respite from the whirlwind of emotions inside her.
As she leans against the railing, the city lights twinkle below, contrasting sharply with the turmoil in her heart. She takes a deep breath, trying to steady herself. The sounds of the party fade into the background, replaced by the gentle rustle of the night breeze and the distant hum of traffic.
Just as she begins to find a semblance of calm, she hears footsteps approaching. Her pulse quickens, and she turns to see Junho stepping onto the balcony. He looks as handsome and composed as ever, his presence commanding yet soothing.
“Yoona,” he says softly, his voice carrying a weight of unspoken emotions.
(I’ve missed you.)
For a moment, neither of them says a word. The air between them is thick with memories and unvoiced feelings. Junho hesitates, then takes a step closer, his eyes reflecting the same mixture of pain and longing that she feels.
“Junho,” she replies, her heart aching at the sight of him. “Congratulations on your award. You deserved it.”
(I’ve missed you too.)
“Thank you,” he says, taking another step closer. "It's been a while."
(Did you think of me?)
"It has," she agrees, the distance between them feeling both too far and too close.
(I’ve thought about you every day.)
A heavy silence hangs between them, the air thick with unspoken words and lingering emotions. Yoona looks out at the city lights, their vibrant glow a stark contrast to the dull ache in her chest. She can feel the tears threatening to spill, but she blinks them back, determined to stay composed.
Her heart pounds as she gathers the courage to speak.
"I miss you," she admits finally, her voice barely above a whisper, yet the words carry the weight of months of longing and heartache.
Junho's eyes soften, and he reaches out, gently taking her hand in his. The simple touch sends a wave of warmth through her, a bittersweet reminder of what they once had.
"I miss you too," he says, his thumb brushing over her knuckles in a tender, familiar gesture. "Every day."
For a moment, they stand there, connected by the touch of their hands and the shared sorrow of their separation.
Their breakup had been inevitable, a casualty of their hectic lives, but the love they had for each other had never faded. It lingered in the spaces between their words, in the way their eyes met and held, in the tender gestures that spoke of a bond that time and distance could not break.
Six Months Ago
Junho paced their living room, the tension between them palpable.
"I don't want to do this, but I don't see any other way," he said, his voice strained. "Our schedules, the constant traveling... it's tearing us apart."
Yoona sat on the couch, her eyes filled with unshed tears. "I know," she whispered. "But I don't want to lose you." (Please don't let me go.)
He stopped pacing and knelt in front of her, taking her hands in his. "I love you, Yoona. That's why this is so hard. But we're hurting each other by trying to make this work when everything else is pulling us apart."
She nodded, a tear finally escaping down her cheek. "I love you too, Junho. More than anything. Maybe someday... when things are different..."
Junho pulled her into his arms, holding her tightly as if trying to memorize the feel of her. "Maybe someday," he echoed, his voice breaking. "But for now, we have to let go."
They stayed like that for a long moment, clinging to each other in the last embrace they would share as a couple, both silently pleading, (Please don't let me go.)
Junho takes a deep breath, his eyes searching hers. "I think about you all the time," he confesses. "About us. What we had."
Yoona's grip tightens on his hand. "Me too," she whispers, her voice trembling. "I replay our moments together, wondering if we could have done things differently."
He nods, a pained expression crossing his face. "I know we made the right choice for our careers, but I can’t help but regret how things turned out."
"Do you ever regret it?" Yoona asks, her eyes meeting his, searching for reassurance.
(Do you still love me?)
"Sometimes," Junho admits, his voice thick with emotion. "But I know it was the right thing to do. We needed to focus on our careers."
(I still love you.)
"I know," Yoona says, a tear finally slipping down her cheek. "But it still hurts."
Junho pulls her into a comforting embrace, his arms wrapping around her protectively. "I never stopped caring about you, Yoona. You were always in my heart. It was never about not loving you enough. It was about trying to survive in a world that demanded too much from us."
She clings to him, finding solace in his familiar warmth. "And you were always in mine," she whispers, burying her face in his shoulder. "I never stopped loving you either."
They stand there for a long moment, the world around them fading away as they find comfort in each other's presence. It’s a bittersweet reunion, filled with the pain of their past and the unspoken hope of what could have been. But for now, it’s enough to hold each other and remember the love they once shared.
Junho gently pulls back, looking into Yoona's eyes. "I've thought about us a lot," he says. "Wondered if we made the right choice."
"Me too," Yoona admits. "But being here with you, even just for a moment, makes everything seem clearer."
Junho nods, his heart heavy with the weight of their shared pain. "Maybe one day, things will be different," he says, his voice filled with emotion. "Maybe we’ll have another chance to get it right, without the pressures pulling us apart."
"Maybe," Yoona whispers, a small, hopeful smile playing on her lips. The possibility is a comforting thought.
Junho holds her tightly, reluctant to let go, his arms wrapped around her as if trying to etch the memory of her warmth into his soul. He doesn't know when he will have another chance to hold her like this, and the thought fills him with a deep sense of sadness. Yoona's embrace is equally desperate, both of them clinging to the fleeting moment of connection.
As they finally pull away, Junho presses a gentle kiss to her forehead, a tender promise lingering in the touch.
"Take care of yourself, Yoona." (I love you.)
"You too, Junho." (I love you too.)
They hold each other's gaze for a long moment, the words left unspoken hanging in the air between them. With one last lingering glance, they part ways, each carrying the echoes of their love in their hearts. Junho watches as Yoona walks away, his chest tightening with the uncertainty of their future. He holds tightly to the hope that one day, they might find their way back to each other.
It isn't a perfect ending, but it is their story, and for now, that is enough.
