A map of guiding stars

Summary:

Beau and Yasha are making their way through the Wastes and resting for the night when they get talking about Yasha's past

Notes:

It's that time of the year again!!

Work Text:

“I love you babe, but a map is supposed to help narrow down an area, this is literally just the entire Wasteland of Xhorhas.”

Yasha threw her head back and roared with laughter from where she was sitting and stoking the fire and Beau’s stupid heart skipped a beat at the sound.

“That,” Yasha rose and came over to her, pulling out another piece of paper, “is because that’s only half of it. This is meant to go over the map.” Yasha gently took the map out of Beau’s hands and put the other paper over it before handing it back to her.

“Are those… constellations?” She asked and looked up at Yasha.

Her girlfriend, and being able to call her that still gave Beau a rush even after almost 2 months, nodded. “My tribe was, or is, I guess, nomadic. We move around the wastes according to the time of year and depending on the season, you’re going to be able to see one of those constellations. If we find the right one, we know that we’re in the right territory and after that, I know the spots they would be.”

“Huh.” Beau looked down at the maps and back up at the stars, she had never paid much attention to stars or constellations, so admittedly she was a little lost. “This looks hand drawn, did you make it?”

Yasha makes a noise that Beau had come to know as a sign that Yasha is uncomfortable with the attention. “It’s not great or anything, there were people in the tribe that dedicated their lives to making these maps, but obviously I don’t have one of those so we’re going to have to make do wit-!Oph!”

Beau interrupts Yasha with a kiss, recognizing the oncoming rant that would have almost certainly put down Yasha and her skills.

She can feel how Yasha relaxes into the kiss, the soft, happy smile she had come to know so well and love just as much.

“You know, I never really bothered to learn about constellations and shit, it could be pretty cool to learn some. You could maybe teach me?”

Yasha looks at her with a soft look filled with a history that Beau doesn’t know yet but she wants to, desperately.

And she can, she will , because she and Yasha has all the time in the world.

She’s sure that she looks like a love struck fool with how she looks at Yasha. “Well, no time like the present, right? Which one can we see from here?”

Yasha laughs, but Beau doesn’t feel laughed at, but rather like she’s being laughed with, “I, ah, appreciate the enthusiasm, but we will need to wait for a night a little less cloudy. It’s been a while since I had to navigate solely this way and I am a little rusty…”

“Hey, that just means more time spent with you, so I’m not complaining.” Yasha got that soft look again at her words and Beau wanted Yasha to keep looking at her like that ‘til the end of time. “But I really would like to learn more about the stars or even just what you were like growing up.”

“I actually always loved the stars, sometimes I would sneak out just to stare at them. Never for too long or anything, it just made me feel comforted.” Yasha looked over at her and hesitated for a moment. “Also later on, during the times I was alone for one reason or another, they made me feel less alone.”

Beau was smart enough to understand that Yasha included her time with Obann but didn’t want to actively say it, “I’m just happy you had something that gave you some comfort.” She cuddled up in Yasha’s lap, happily wiggling a little into her embrace as Yasha continued to tell her of both the stars and her life.

Beau listened with rapt attention, feeling safe and in love with Yasha beneath the stars.
