Spring Allergies

Chapter Text

Walking into the bunk room with a wad of balled up tissues, TK sneezed and blew his nose, as he quickly got dressed into his uniform.

"I hate the trees, I hate the flowers, I hate the grass, I hate pollen," TK grumbled, as he made his way downstairs, sneezing twice more.

"Someone's in a grumpy mood," Nancy observed, watching as TK walked over to the ambulance with a pouty face.

"Shut up, Nance. These allergies are kicking my butt. My eyes are so itchy, my nose is all stuffed up and itchy, and I'm popping allergy pills round the clock, I hate allergies." As if to prove his point, TK turned away from Nancy and sneezed three times into his shoulder. Turning back to her, he sniffled, looking miserable.

"I dont know what to tell you, TK, maybe take the day off?" Nancy suggested.

"No, Nance, I can't do that. Austin can't be down a perfectly fine paramedic."

"Well, then if you're perfectly fine, how about you start helping me stock the ambulance," Nancy said.

Grumbling, TK got to work helping Nancy. As they were making headway on stocking supplies, the alarm went off:

"EMS 126, medical assistance call out to Lonestar SC Justin Lane Soccer Fields," the words of the dispatcher blared over the speakers.

Rushing out of her office, Tommy hopped into the back of the ambulance, "Let's roll."

Hopping into the driver's seat, TK switched on the lights and sirens as he pulled out of the ambulance bay. Navigating through the afternoon traffic, he pulled up to the soccer fields within five minutes, and looking around, noticed a group of people surrounding someone lying on the field. Hopping out of the ambulance, TK let out a sneeze as he grabbed his medical bag.

Walking across the field, the three paramedics soon made it to the group of people, and TK's heart dropped into his stomach as he noticed who the injured person was.

"Carlos!!?" Dropping to his knees next to his injured husband, TK began pulling his gloves on to check Carlos over. "What happened?"

"We were responding to an altercation in the park and when we were almost ready to leave, he got hit in the head with a baseball. He lost consciousness for a couple minutes, he only recently came to," Carlos' partner replied.

As Nancy and Tommy began examining Carlos' head, TK pulled the penlight out of his pocket, turning it on and instructing Carlos to look at him. As he passed the light over Carlos' eyes, TK noticed his pupils were out of focus. Clicking the penlight off, TK heard Carlos moan, and looked up to see him go an unsettling shade of green. Grabbing an emesis bag, TK held it in front of Carlos as Carlos emptied the contents of his stomach into the bag. Humming in sympathy, TK ran a comforting hand through Carlos' hair. "Baby, it looks like you have a concussion. We're gonna take you in to get you checked out, okay?"

Whimpering in pain, Carlos could only slump his shoulders and sigh.

"Do you want us to bring the stretcher, or do you think you can walk to the ambulance?" TK asked.

"I think I can walk," Carlos managed to say.

Helping him to his feet, TK slung his medical bag over his shoulder and wrapped his other arm around Carlos, as Nancy took up a position on Carlos' other side. Slowly they began making their way to the ambulance, with Tommy a few feet behind.

As they were making their way through the field, TK suddenly twisted away from Carlos, sneezing three times over his shoulder. "Fucking grass," he mumbled quietly.

"TK? Have you taken your allergy pills?" Carlos asked weakly.

"Carlos, no, don't turn me into your patient. You're the patient, let me focus on you," TK said, sneezing again.

Arriving to the ambulance, Nancy opened the back doors and she and TK helped Carlos onto the gurney, with TK keeping a steadying hand on Carlos at all times.

Jumping into the driver's seat, Nancy buckled herself in as Tommy hopped into the back with TK.

As TK was getting Carlos settled, Carlos made a sound, and looking up, TK recognized he was going to be sick again. Grabbing another emesis bag, TK was quick to get it in front of Carlos right before he threw up for the second time. Setting the bag down, TK soothed Carlos as he slowly helped him sit back against the head of the stretcher.

As Nancy began navigating towards Austin Memorial, TK sat down on the bench seat, taking hold of Carlos' hand and rubbing his thumb soothingly across Carlos' hand. As they neared Austin Memorial, Carlos' grip in TK's hand stiffened and Carlos' body started jerking.

"Cap, he's seizing!" TK said in alarm.

TK could only watch helplessly as Carlos seized in front of him. To him, it felt like forever, but when the tremors slowly dissipated, TK turned to Tommy with fear in his eyes. "How long?"

"Just over three minutes. TK, I know you're worried for him but I need you to hook him up to some oxygen, can you do that?"

"Yeah, I can do that," TK said. Going through the motions of prepping the oxygen, allowed his mind to calm down, and by the time he slipped the oxygen mask over Carlos' unconscious face, his hands werent shaking anymore.

"We're here," Nancy called from up front.

As TK and Tommy opened the back doors and unloaded Carlos from the ambulance, TK could only watch as a team of nurses whisked the stretcher away and into a triage room.

"TK, you're off shift for the rest of the day. Let us know when there's updates," Tommy said.

"Yeah cap," TK said. Making his way to the waiting room, TK slumped down in a chair, numb to the hard plastic of it, as his mind worried over Carlos.
