Luz and Amity met on the first day of kindergarten. Luz had shown up to school in a pair of overall shorts with an Azura patch sewn on, a long sleeve rainbow shirt and she sported a pixie cut. Amity wore a pair of old purple shorts and a faded The Good Witch Azura graphic t-shirt that she bought with her older siblings from the local thrift store with the little money her mother had given her to buy new school clothes. When Luz saw the brown haired girl wearing a shirt with her favorite book series that her father always read to her she immediately ran up to her and started talking.
“OhmygoshdoyoulikeAzuratoo!?!? IloveAzura!” Luz rushed out all in one breath.
Amity was shocked to say the least. Afterall she wasn't really expecting a girl to rush up to her and talk so quickly that she wasn't even sure she was speaking the English language. After taking a moment to shake herself out of her shock she cleared her throat and spoke to the girl.
“What?”
“Your shirt! It's Azura right? Do you read The Good Witch Azura too?” Luz asked with the biggest, brightest smile on her face and more excitement in her voice than amity has ever heard from a person.
Still slightly in shock, all Amity could do was nod her head in an up and down motion, too nervous about having to talk to a person who wasn't her siblings or parents. Not that she ever talked to her parents much anyway.
“I'm Luz. Luz Noceda and I love The Good Witch Azura too!”
“Im Amity Blight”
“Wanna be friends Amity? We could read The Good Witch Azura Together!” Luz said, a smile still on her face.
“You know how to read?” Amity asked in amazement. Amity herself could only read a few words and small sentences thanks to the help Ed and Em for teaching her a few things before school started since her parents never bothered to teach her. After asking that question Luz’ smile fell as if in thought before returning in full force.
“No, my papá always reads it to me… but we can learn together and then read it together! So do you wanna be friends?” she asked a little hesitantly, almost as if she were afraid of being rejected.
Taking a moment to think, Amity decided that she rather liked Luz. She seemed nice and liked Azura. She also seemed to radiate happiness which Amity liked.
“Ok! I'd like that.” Amity agreed with an eager nod and a small smile on her face.
Squealing with delight Luz scooped Amity into a bone crushing hug. “We will be the best friends the world has ever seen!”
Not being used to receiving hugs Amity wasn't sure what to do so she just stood there awkwardly with her arms at her sides and wore a slight blush on her cheeks. After releasing Amity from the hug Luz led Amity to one of the joint desks in the middle row where they sat side by side with their backpacks hanging off the backs of their chairs. For the rest of the day the two girls stayed side by side, playing The Good Witch Azura together during recess, sharing food during lunch when the teachers weren't looking (nothing with milk was shared with Luz due to her lactose intolerance), and helping each other with their art projects.
After school that day Luz got into the car where her father waited for her and told him all about her new friend Amity and how she also reads Azura and how they are going to be best friends forever.
Amity walked home with Ed and Em on either side of her and told them all about Luz. She told them everything from the Azura patch on her overalls to her bright and bubbly personality. She had the biggest smile the twins had ever seen her wear as she told them about the girl with the pixie cut and it was probably the happiest the twins have ever seen Amity.
Little did they know that this was the start of a life full of friendship, love, heartaches, and happiness.
