Lucy had her mother's eyes. Well not really. But they were green. The kind that turned darker on the edges and got lighter in the middle. Her mom always said that Lucy got her eyes. But it wasn't from some gene passed down to her, it was simply chance. Being adopted meant she didn't know what genes were recessive or dominant with her biological parents. But it didn't really matter to her. She wanted to be like her mom and dad and big brother and it didn’t matter because that was her family no matter what. She liked learning to speak Spanish with them because it made her feel like a part of their family. Her family. She liked having green eyes like her mom, and brown hair like her dad and James. These were the only things about her appearance that had ever mattered to her. But as she got older physical appearances weren't just having green eyes or long or short hair. It was about having good features or a hot body, which to Lucy she never had. James always got attention from girls and even guys and her friends had little two month relationships with boys they thought were cute but boys never even looked at Lucy. Hell, she had been at Hogwarts for 3 years and the only male attention she got was from her brother's friends which was in no way romantic. Not if she could help it.
“Lucy! Come on we're already late for the train!” James yelled from downstairs.
She looked in the mirror in her room and bit her lip. She tried putting her hair up. No. She tried a different outfit. Nothing new. She tried makeup. It helped but she still thought she looked the same. She wanted something to be different about her but she was just looking at what she had seen for her whole life. She decided on the new cream turtleneck and plaid skirt her mom got her with her cream-colored Mary Jane’s.
“I’m coming!” She yelled.
She looked at herself in the mirror one last time and put her hair in a half up half down. As she is doing it James walks in covered in a light layer of sweat from carrying his bags downstairs.
“Can you help me with mine too?” She says with a huge smile on her face.
“Sure princesa is there anything else I can do for you?” He says sarcastically between heavy breaths.
“Well actually-”
“I was joking.” He says handing her one of her bags as he carries the rest of her luggage.
She takes it and starts walking downstairs. “Thank youuuu. You are the best! I love y-”
“Just shut up and get downstairs.”
They reach the bottom and their parents give them both a look. Her mom's eyes are already filling with tears. Their dad is looking at them with a proud wistfulness that he is trying to hide.
“Oh come on guys this is the fourth year you’ve had to do this. And your 5th with James. I would have thought you would be less emotional by now.” Lucy says, crossing her arms.
In true James fashion, he just goes to their mom and hugs her. Lucy and her dad look at each other and exchange sweet expressions.
“We’ll be ok Mom. I’ll keep an eye on her like always.” He says looking back at Lucy.
Lucy rolled her eyes and headed toward the door.
“I don't need that James. now let's go.”
…
“Lucy!” Mary and Lily screamed when Lucy walked onto the train platform.
Lucy screamed and ran to hug them both and James winced at the high-pitched squeal.
“Lucy what happened to you!” Mary said spinning Lucy around and looking at her.
“What do you mean?” Lucy started but was interrupted by James.
“Hey Lily,” he says giving her the famous Potter smile earning a blush from her “and hey Mary.”
“Hello, James. Have you seen Sirius yet? I've been dying to see him all summer.” Mary said with wide eyes and a look that Lucy knew meant she had been wanting more than just talking.
Lucy pulled Lily aside to get on the train as James gave them both a look pleading for help from the situation he is now stuck in. They both ignored him and got on the train laughing. The laughing stopped abruptly though when they got on the train. Lucy looked around to see everyone on the train staring at them.
“Why are they staring at us?” Lucy whispered and grabbing Lily by her arm.
“Us? No, they are looking at you.” Lily asked smiling at Lucy’s reaction.
“Me? Why?” Lucy said stopping.
“You look a lot different from last year Luce,” Lily said before walking into the cabin next to them.
In the cabin, a few people had already gathered chatting and talking about everything they did over the summer. Lily sat down next to Peter on the seat as Lucy walked in.
“Hey everyone!” Lucy said before sitting next to Lily.
When she looked at all of them there were surprised looks on all of their faces. Well except Remus. He simply waved and continued reading the book in his hand. But as for Sirius, Peter, Camille, and Marlene, they all just looked at her with strange expressions on their faces.
“Where’s Casey?” Lily says to Sirius who is still looking at Lucy with a confused expression.
“Um- Some family shit with Reg-” he says not even looking away.
“What?” Lucy says to all of them.
“Luce! You look amazing. What did you do over the summer?” Camille said standing up and sitting next to her.
“Nothing that I know of? I think I got a tan or something?” Camille just laughed at her. She said, confused at what any of them were talking about. Has she really changed that much over the summer?
“Sirius,” James screamed before opening the door to the cabin. “Mary definitely wants to talk to you.”
He says sounding exhausted from probably hearing Mary talk about him since Lucy and Lily left them. Mary follows behind him looking offended by James’ remark.
“I do not!” she says before taking the last empty seat. “I want to talk about Lucy’s glow-up.”
Lucy’s face turns red from embarrassment.
“Actually I think we should try and find the trolly before we leave.” Lucy says trying to deflect from this very awkward situation.
“Fine. Let's go.” Mary says rolling her eyes.
They get up and Camille and Lily follow. And after a moment of silence, Sirius brakes the silence.
“Bloody Hell James. Your sister got hot.”
“Yeah,” Marlene says her eyes wide.
“Yeah, objectively I guess,” Remus says still looking at his book.
“I told you all this before,” Peter says.
“Oh Bloody hell never say that again,” James says giving them all a death glare.
…
It's been two months since the train ride to Hogwarts and it was more than just her friends who reacted. People were looking at her. They talked to her and people were being so nice to her. I guess pretty privilege is a thing. Lucy had thought about it for a while. Had she really changed that much? She knew it was normal for girls her age to change like this but she didn't think she would. All her friends were in the year above her so she had always been a bit behind. But did she really change in just a few months? By the school's reaction, she must have.
“I’m so excited!” Lucy said to Marlene in the locker room after the game.
“I bet,” Marlene says from the shower next to her. “I mean it's your first party after getting hot.”
“Bloody hell Marlene. I think you all are being dramatic about all that. I don’t see any difference from last year.”
They both dry off and put on their clothes before walking out to finish getting ready.
“Oh there is a difference, Luce,” she says, smiling at her and shutting her locker.
“I don't know. You would think people would do more than just stare if that were true. I mean not a single person has asked me out. I mean I don’t need them too. It is just strange that people keep staring but not actually doing anything.”
“I don't know Luce.” Marlene said walking toward the rest of the team.
They sat down at the mirror and started their makeup for the party. The rest of the girls on the team all talked and listened to music to get ready for the party. When they were ready Marlene and Lucy walked up to the party together.
When they walk into the common room there is already music blasting and people yelling everywhere. The guys on the team are still in their gear and are now so drunk they are just screaming about their win. Mostly James. When Lucy walked by people stared. She didn't know how to handle this kind of attention so she just pretended she didn’t see it. But it bothered her that no one had asked her out. Not like she needed it. But after three years of watching her friends talk to guys, she wanted to finally be noticed.
“Hey! Let’s dance!” Mary interrupted her thoughts by pulling her onto the dance floor.
Lucy grabbed a drink and followed her into the circle of people. Take a Chance on Me by Abba started playing and Mary and Lucy both smiled and started dancing. When the song ends Lucy is a little tipsy after her drink. She walks back to the drink table for a second and took another shot.
“Nice Lucy.”
Lucy turns her head to find Paul Wilson. He is another guy on the Gryffindor team but they had never been close outside of the games and practice.
“Thank you. It's an art.” She says turning to face him.
“Definitely. I mean if you are gonna drink underage you should do it properly.”
He was tall and cute and had a nice smile. He was definitely someone that dated a lot but she wasn't gonna judge him. She’s friends with Mary and Sirius for merlin's sake.
“I completely agree.”
He moved closer to her and leaned on the table in front of her.
“So do you have a boyfriend yet? It’s only a matter of time.” He asks bluntly.
“Wow. Straight to the point are we?” Lucy says grinning.
“I'm not one who likes waiting. And I’m never afraid of a challenge. Especially ones that look like you.” He says looking her up and down.
“Oh, and I'm a challenge?” She says flirting back.
“Your brother is.” He says trying to lean closer.
“What do you mean?” She says putting space between them and furrowing her brow.
“You didn't know?” He took another step closer to her trying to bring her back to where they were.
“Know what?” She crossed her arms and took another step back.
“James told everyone on the team and practically the school to not try and date you until you’re 16. But I don't care what he says. If I think a girl is cute I'm gonna talk to them.”
He tried leaning into her again. Almost kissing distance before She pushed him back and looked in the direction of James.
“Excuse me a moment.”
James was dancing with some Ravenclaw girl before Lucy pulled him away and pulled him to an empty hallway.
“Hey what the hell are you doing-”
James stumbled behind her before catching himself on the wall.
“What the hell were you thinking?!”
She was practically fuming now because she now understood why people had been avoiding her.
“What?” He said still very drunk.
“Telling people not to date me until I’m 16!” her ears now a dark crimson.
“Oh, that.” He said running his hand over his face. He clearly thought she wouldn't find out.
“Why would you do that?!”
People were starting to stare at them so he lowered his voice so as to not draw attention.
“You’re not ready Lucy.”
He looked at her like she was a child having a temper tantrum which only made her angrier.
“I am not that much younger than you. And I can handle myself.” She said exasperated.
“No, you can't, it's my job to protect you.”
Her job dropped at how stupid he was being.
“I never asked you to do that,” Lucy said trying to get him to understand.
“You didn't have to.”
She felt bad because she knew that he just cared about her. But he had to let her make her own decisions and he had to stop doing things for her all the time.
“James you can't go around controlling my life. It's not your job. So just let me actually do something I want to for the first time in my life.”
She walked away without even seeing the look on his face. She went straight to the drink table and stopped next to Sirius.
“Hey Luce,” Sirius said before Lucy did two back-to-back shots of whisky.
Sirius's eyes widened before laughing a bit at her eagerness.
“Oh. Wow. Doing good then?”
“So good.” She says blank-faced before taking another shot.
“What's up?” He said as he poured himself another drink.
“James, he is being super overprotective and-”
“Oh yeah, mama bear said no to boys till 16. He told us. He made it VERY clear to me that you are off-limits. Not that I would try. You may have gotten hot over the summer Luce, but it's a no for me.”
She gave a dry laugh pouring herself a real drink. “Believe me it's mutual.”
The idea hit her at the same time as the three shots did.
“Oh, My God. Sirius, you need to kiss me.”
“What? I just said no Lucy and James would-”
“No its not for that. But it might get James off my back. And don't worry I'll keep him from beating the shit out of you.”
He took a second to think about it before responding.
“That wasn't very reassuring but sure. And I'm only doing this cause I'm drunk and need some excitement.”
She grinned at him and grabbed his arm.
“You are the best now come on.”
…
“He is right there,” Sirius said on the couch right across from where James is dancing.
“That’s kind of the point Sirius.” She said rolling her eyes.
“Ok well, I’m sorry I’m hesitant about kissing my best friend's little sister.”
Lucy sat on the couch next to him and grabbed the sides of his face.
“Too little too late Sirius.”
Then she kissed him right in James’ eye line. Luckily Sirius kissed back which helped the whole thing appear more real. It only took about 30 seconds of them kissing before James is dragging her and Sirius by the arm into an empty hallway while muttering curses in Spanish.
“¡Te voy a matar! ¡No me jodas! Tu pinche pandejo! ¡Juro por Dios Sirius-” James said, getting close to Sirius in a clear fighting stance. Lucy took a step in between the two before James could do something stupid.
“Hey Hey ¡Alto! Ok talk to me first. ¡Dios mío!” Lucy said, trying to get James to calm down so she could talk to him.
James looked in between them before looking at Lucy.
“Fine. But I'll be back.”
Lucy pulled them back from a very terrified-looking Sirius.
“Pero qué carajo Lucy? Are you trying to disobey everything I tell you?”
“Yes, I am. Because I have to jump to extremes to get you to understand. I need you to see that if I really wanted to I could find someone to date that you wouldn't approve of. And I will if you keep restricting everything I do. I will purposely go against everything you do if you don't give me space. So please I need you to trust that I can make my own decisions. And then maybe I can be with someone for more than just pissing you off.”
A beat passes between them and he just looked at her and thought about everything she said.
“Fine. I'm sorry I just love you and don't want you to get hurt. But I'll tell everyone I've chilled out a bit.”
“Thank you.” She smiled at him and he gladly smiled back.
After he walked to her and hugged her. And being James it was one that said more than he had to.
“Just don't ever kiss my best friend again.” He said into her hair which made her laugh.
“So I can go and kiss anyone I want now!” She said with a huge grin on her face.
“Bloody hell Luce you are gonna drive me crazy aren't you.” He said on a long sigh.
“Don’t I always”
