june and kyoru were hanging out at her house one day, their parallel play suddenly interrupted when june slowly turned to look at him, grinning. kyoru glanced back at her, immediately feeling lightly concerned.
"does kyoru want to know why you're looking at him like that?"
"why wouldn't you wanna hear what's going in my head?"
"true..."
"soooooooo, i just got the best idea!"
"what?"
"i'm gonna do your makeup!"
he blinked at her. "you can't do that to sonny instead?"
"i mean, i could. i don't think he'd mind. but he's not here right now, so it has to be you! plus, you'd look so pretty."
"kyoru isn't sure about that," he mumbled, glancing to the side.
"come on, you always look pretty anyway," she said with a small pout, making kyoru's face heat up. "sooo, can i?" with a small sigh, he caved.
"alright."
she smiled. "yay! okay, let me wash my hands." with that, she slipped into her bathroom connected to her room. upon her return, kyoru noticed she was holding two little pink things; she held them up to him with a smile, showing off identical 'my melody' hairclips. after brushing his hair out of his face, she clipped them in, keeping it out the way. he instinctively looked away. for one thing, he had never been great with eye contact. he also still didn't like his eyes that much even though june seemed to think they were pretty for whatever reason.
"okay, hold on," she scooted off the bed for a moment to her desk, grabbing a few things off of it and placing them hastily on the bedside table instead. positioning herself back on the bed, she had a little orange bottle in her hand; she squeezed a few drops onto her other hand. "i'm gonna touch you now, okay?" after kyoru nodded, she began to gently pat the cold, sweet-smelling liquid onto his cheeks, over his nose and forehead. "this is just a moisturizer, it makes your skin feel really good, right?" kyoru nodded along.
when she was finished, she replaced the orange bottle with an even smaller pink one. she began pressing it into his face again. "this is the serum i use," she began to explain, kyoru still determinedly looking away. he was painfully aware of how close she was. "it, like, moisturizes your skin and, of course, makes it glow. i love using serums for primers because they give the perfect amount of tackiness for the base to go on, and also, i'm not sure if you're gonna break out after this- so this should hopefully stop that from happening as much! and it smells, like, really good." june brought her hands up to her own face when she was done, sniffing the excess serum on her fingers before rubbing the rest into her hands. after spraying his face with some strange mist - "close your eyes, okay? this might feel weird!" - she took out the first item of makeup that kyoru actually recognized a little bit. at least, he thought it was foundation when he looked at it. she mixed some of it with the serum - "i like to mix it, 'cause then it looks more glowy, and saves more product!" - and she began to smear it against a mildly intimidating mini spatula device.
"you don't use a brush?" he asked as she began to paint the foundation on his cheek.
"i like the spatula better, it reminds me of those cool videos of people painting with little spatulas, you know? so satisfying," she replied simply with a soft smile. "also, i'm a bit clumsy, so this is good for getting a thin, even layer across my face- well, your face."
"oh."
she repeated the process on his other cheek, nose and forehead, using a small sponge that felt like a cushion to blend it, and added another layer just in case. next was a concealer that she applied underneath his eyes and on his chin and her aforementioned primer on his eyelids that she set with some light-colored eyeshadow. kyoru couldn't help but sneak glances at her, trying not to smile at her slightly-parted lips. he wasn't sure why she was doing, but it was cute.
after tapping what she called 'setting powder' under his eyes and the area around his nose, she brushed off her powdery hands. "now it's time for colorful stuff!" clasping her hands together, she admired him. "i think lilac blush is gonna brighten up your face," she commented as she grabbed it, along with a brush. it felt soft and clean on his face. "i like to put it under my eyebag area and then bring it to the sides of my nose - it's how i make my face look more colorful - so i'll do that for you, too!" a few moments passed before she applied another blush, this one a rosy pink, and blended it into the lilac blush. "next is contour!" june picked up a rectangular shaped pallet with three shades, the ones on the side much more worn-down then the practically untouched centre one. "i never use this for myself, they're too dark for my skin, but i love using it on my friends who have the same skin color as you," using a new, smaller brush, she started applying it to the tips of his nose, making him feel a little itchy. she also defined the areas underneath his eyebrows in half-circular motions. she warned him before applying the same spray to his face once she was done. "okay, and for your eyes, i'm gonna use the pink blush again as a transition shade!" june explained as she applied it to his eyes with a fluffy, larger brush, bringing it into the inner corner of his eyes.
"should i do your eyebrows," she pondered, mostly to herself. "i usually do them before eyeshadow, but you have good eyebrows, so i don't think it's totally necessary... i never get to do my own eyebrows," she said with a pout. "they're too dark, i never need to." she decided to leave his eyebrows and instead grabbed a pink pallet filled with various shades of pinks and purples, some sparkly and some not. after examining him for a moment, she applied a mauve shade to his lids. june went in with a lighter hand at first and then built the pigment up, little-by-little. she took her concealer back out and began to do what she referred to as 'cutting the crease'. "i'm gonna put the concealer pretty high, 'cause you have hooded eyes and also epicanthic folds, so, like, you won't be able to tell i cut the crease otherwise."
after a minute or two, june suddenly seemed to grow very excited as she realized something. "oh, it's sparkly time!"
using a new pallet made up of various sparkly shades ranging from pure white to dark brown, she applied the second-to-lightest one onto his lids. "these aren't metallic, they're basically just glitter but for your face, it looks really subtle and pretty!" going back to the part of his eye where she put concealer, she drew a curved line around it with a new, glittery pen-like tool. june was definitely one for attention-to-detail; she kept going back to the purple-pink pallet and adding little details onto his eye before finally moving on to applying a coral eyeliner on his lower lash-line. she was the quietest kyoru had ever seen her as she did this. now, she was holding a more traditional, black eyeliner - "technically, this isn't eyelier, it's an eyebrow pen, but i like it as an eyeliner 'cause the brush tip is so nice!" - and silently drew wings on him, smudging it out subtly with eyeshadow. june then moved on to adding aegyo-sal.
"i don't really know what i'm going for, i'm kind of just winging it," she said, her voice barely above a whisper as she concentrated. "i was just gonna go for whatever i think you'd look cute in, but you'd look cute in everything i can think of, so..."
she used glitter to highlight his under-eyes and nose, then decided to add more glitter to his lids, dragging it down with her finger. "boys always have such nice eyelashes," she said with a small huff. "i don't even need to draw eyelashes on you! you want me to curl them?" she asked, picking up a curler device. kyoru blinked at it for a second before slowly shaking his head. he didn't know what that thing was going to do and he didn't want to find out.
"okay!" putting it back down, she moved on to putting on his mascara straight. kyoru had to do a strange blinking pattern that he couldn't quite get the hang of, but june didn't complain once about it. there was a set of fake lashes on the bedside table, but june ignored them, deciding that if he didn't like the curler, he definitely wouldn't like fake lashes.
"we're almost done," she announced happily, picking up what kyoru assumed was lipstick, but she explained it was instead a lip tint. "this formula is more hydrating, it calls itself 'juicy'! i don't even own any matte lipstick, it tends to dry my lips too much, and i don't think i look good with matte stuff!" kyoru couldn't really imagine her looking bad with any sort of style of makeup, though whenever she was this close, he did notice her lips had a very subtle tint to them. he knew she pretty much always wore some form of tint because her lips were naturally very pale and she was sort of insecure about it. she used the tint to contour his lips and blended some parts of it out with her finger. finally, she grabbed some sparkly lipgloss. it was slightly cold on his lips.
"and that's it, i think!" she scooted back a little, placing her hands on her lap as she admired kyoru's final look. "yeah! i told you you'd be pretty!" shy, kyoru averted his gaze again. "come on, i need to know what you think too," she said as she handed him a mirror from off her desk.
hesitantly, he took the mirror and gazed at his reflection. he was definitely sparkly - maybe june wasn't completely wrong. he still felt like she was exaggerating, but he didn't think he looked too bad, either. "soooo, thoughts?"
"you did great!" he replied, placing the handheld mirror on the sheets. "it looks really nice."
"sooooo, you admit that you're pretty!"
he gave a little shrug. "kyoru was just complimenting your makeup skills, but okay."
"well, you need to also compliment your looks. it's not just about the makeup, you know. the reason you look so good is 'cause of your face!!"
after a moment, he replied, "kyoru will try."
"yay! maybe- oh, maybe we could go out! i can pick you out a really cute outfit - we're the same clothing size, anyway - and-"
kyoru smiled as he listened to her ramble about what they could do. truth be told, june hadn't suggested this to test out her makeup skills - she knew he was already great at it, having so many friends to do the makeup of, and just used that as an excuse. no, she had mostly suggested it because he wanted to try and help kyoru see his beauty. she knew that didn't come easy to him and it made her sad. she wished kyoru could see just how amazing he was in every way, and she was willing to do whatever it took to try and help achieve that result! she also knew it would take a while, but even just the fact that kyoru seemed to like his appearance right now was progress, and she was happy with that.
