Work Text:

Wilkesbooth crept slowly up the Theatre stairs. It was a perfect opportunity for him to eradicate the problem for the american people. Armed with a Derringer pistol, he would put an end to Abraham Lincoln's presidential term once and for all.

Admiring the walls of the booth, he couldn't help but think about the good old days, when him and Abe were happily in love. He shook those feelings as he inched ever closer to the president.

"I won't forgive you after what you did to me.." Wilkesbooth said, tears welling up in his eyes just thinking about it.

He reached the top of the stairs, standing face to face with a small door. Slowly cracking the door open, he could see the top of Abe's hat. That damned stupid hat. I should just blow it right off his head! Wilkesbooth thought. He slowly brought the pistol up, aiming it right where Abe's head would be, and..

A tap was felt on Wilkesbooth's shoulder. He whipped around, gun drawn, ready to shoot whoever it was that dared interrupt his master plan, only to be met with Lincoln staring back at him.

"Wilkesbooth..? What are you doing here? And what is with the gun?" Abe said, looking at Wilkesbooth worringly.

"You..You! I should just-!" Wilkesbooth quickly rose the gun to meet the temple of Abe's head, reached to pull the trigger, but failed. What? Did it misfire? They both thought.

Wilkesbooth looked down to find that he hadn't pulled the trigger at all. He couldn't bring himself to do it.

Wilkesbooth stood there the gun still raised,

“Why?” Wilkesbooth asked as a tear rolled down his cheek.

“Why what?” Abe Lincoln asked as he handed Wilkesbooth a handkerchief.

“You knew how dangerous this is, you had to have atleast known that something like this would happen.” Wilkesbooth said as he wiped away his tears.

“I never knew you still cared about me, John and honestly I still have feelings and care about you too.” Abraham Lincoln said as he grabbed Wilkesbooth at his waist.

'Abraham.... I.. I still love you." He wiped the tear from his cheek "But.. after what you did? I... don't know.."

Abraham gently shushed him, pushing the pistol into his coat so no one else could see.

"Wilkes... I.. I'm so sorry. I never should've let the world get in the way of our love..." Abraham began to tear up slightly, shaking his head "We can do this! I don't care how long it takes-- please, let's try again" he said, the hope potent in his tone.

"You know I could never truly hurt you- Abe- I..." *Wilkes stared up at Abraham. "you know what... if.. if you are willing." They locked eyes as Wilkes continued "Let's run away together. Just us- we have the money. We could live our life out somewhere, how we truly want it! safe! away from these people" he gestured around at the theatre.

"yes- absolutely" Abe nodded, pulling Wilkes close as they left the theatre. They packed quickly and left that night, heading north. By the time the sun rose, the couple were already hours away on horses, carrying all they could on their backs.
