No One Knows

Summary:

"Everything is so crazy right now, and I have no idea what my future holds, but it would be so cool if you were in it."

"Luz, I know things are scary, and I don't know what the future holds. But it would be so cool if you were a part of that."

Notes:

It's been ages since I've written anything... feels like I haven't been here in a million years.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Luz couldn't sleep. During her brief visit back to the Human Realm, her mom had made her promise to go back there and never come back to the Boiling Isles. Her brain was playing a bass riff she'd heard a few days ago during Bard classes, but she couldn't stop thinking about that promise.

It's not fair...

I want to go back to the Human Realm, I want to be with my mom, but I can't never come back to the Demon Realm! Why should my fun have to end?

I've only been here a few months, it's only the beginning of my journey! I want to stay, see my friends begin to age, count down to the ends of their lives-

...

ok, maybe the casual morbidity is starting to affect me.

Still, why should I go back to the Human Realm? Aside from my mom, everyone just calls me irresponsible, habitual, Luz-er, and every other insult they can come up with. When anyone thinks of me, they're just filling their heads with schemes to bully me.

But here, in the Boiling Isles? Everyone in school loves me, I have a smart, cool, and classy girlfriend, and Eda's a much more attentive mom than-

...no, that's not fair to Mami. I of all people should know she's still grieving Papi just as much as me. Besides, she's a reasonable woman, I'm sure I could convince her to let me stay if I showed her the wonders of this world. Yeah, that might work!

Luz couldn't sleep after finding out Belos was Philip Wittebane this whole time. She just sat there in the living room of the Owl House, stuck in a traumatized daze.

I-I didn't know!

I didn't want to cause any harm to anyone, I just... I guess sometimes my actions hurt.

Maybe there's something I should find to make a working portal, and then... I'll make plans to leave the Boiling Isles forever.

...

No, no! Call me irresponsible, but I am NOT leaving this world I love more than my own to suffer for MY mistake! I will save the Boiling Isles and I will stay here as its protector, promise to my mom be damned! When Belos thinks of me, he better be filling his head with schemes, because I'll stop at nothing to destroy that motherfucking bastard excuse of a human!

...

Wow... I didn't know... you could run out of... breath... in your own mind...

...

If Belos thinks he'll win, he better think again, because no one knows what I'm capable of! I've overcome every challenge the Isles has thrown at me so far, how would this be any different?

...

I should tell Eda and King what happened. Together, we should be able to think of some way to defeat Belos. After that's done, I'll go back to building that portal... and leaving the Boiling Isles forever.

Luz stood in front of a portal back to the Boiling Isles. Her girlfriend walked up beside her.

"Luz, I know things are scary, and I don't know what the future holds. But it would be so cool if you were a part of that." Amity echoed the words Luz said before asking her out that first time, such a long time ago... "But no more hiding, okay?"

"I understand. See you on the other side. Promise." Luz smiled gently as Amity held her hand and kissed her. Then she watched as her girlfriend vanished into the portal, returning to their world. What was left of it, at least.

Everything is so crazy right now, and I have no idea what my future holds... but it's gonna be so cool now that you're in it.

Notes:

Once again, I've returned to using the song lyrics. Should've known it was too good to last. And even worse, there's barely any Lumity until the very end.

Still, I hope someone out there will like this story better than I do. After all, John Lennon hated a good deal of the songs he wrote in the Beatles, so who knows?
