Work Text:
He was out of breath, it had been so long since he had ran for that long, it had been way too long since he last had felt so anxious.
He could feel it in his bones.
Something was wrong, deeply and horribly wrong.
So he kept on running and running, around him there was so much death, chaos and destruction, but it didn’t affect him until he saw him, laying on the floor.
“No! Guren?” Shinya ran even faster before falling to his knees the moment he had reached the dark haired soldier.
He was covered in blood, the smell of it was nauseating, but somehow, it felt as if it was his own heart the one bleeding in that moment.
“Hey Guren, come on, open your eyes” a nervous laugh left his lips as he touched his shoulder to shake him, like he used to do when he’d find him sleeping on the small couch in his office.
But Guren didn’t move an inch, he could tell he wasn’t breathing either but he kept his tears from rolling down his cheeks, he shook his head and took a deep breath.
“I know you’re not dead, you--”
He started doing CPR, again and again, always checking for a pulse on his bruised neck but there was nothing, his body was cold, it was weird, Guren was always so warm, even in the middle of the winter, but now, now it was stone cold.
“No, no, no, please, please don’t go” he carefully moved his hand to stroke his cheek, his skin was so dry, so dull.
“We were supposed to die together you dumbshit so g- just wake up” harshly, putting all the strength he had left in his body, he hit his chest with his fist, getting his hand stained with his blood, that too was cold, it made his heart ache, how long had he been laying there, in the middle of the street, dead with nobody to bring him home?
Finally, the tears start to flow his cheeks, his hands started to shake as he stared at them.
Was it his fault?
If only he had managed to stop him from leaving, if only he had been a better friend…
Shinya looked around, there weren’t other soldiers, just the two of them but he could feel like someone was watching him.
“God, please, if you really are up there, bring him back” he pointed his blue eyes at the dark cloudy sky, he felt like cursing at whatever God there was.
He noticed Guren’s sword, it seemed as if it had been somehow cut in a half, it wasn’t shiny anymore, as if his connection with the demons had been broken, that would have been a why his body had not healed at all. After taking a deep breath, he brought his body closer to himself, holding it tight, not wanting to let go, not ever. It felt like there was no point of living if he wasn’t there next to him.
“You left me here all alone, it’s not fair” his tears felt burning hot against his cheeks.
“If you think I will take your place, that’s bullshit, everyone can go to hell for what I care” that wasn’t fully true, there were few people he could count on one hand that he cared about.
“How will I tell the girls and Goshi that you’re gone, mh?” another nervous laugh left his lips as he felt like he was losing his shit more and more.
“There has to be a way to bring you back, there has to be” he looked around once again, as if the answer to his prayers was going to be around them.
“Well, well, well, this does bring back memories” an annoying voice came from in front of them, Shinya looked up to meet the red eyes of the bloodsucker, he was quick to grab his weapon and point it at him.
“What did you do to him?” his voice was low and full of anger as he held Guren in a protective way.
“Me? Ouch, can’t believe that you think I did this? Me and him were besties” Ferid smiled, trolling with him, playing dumb, as if he didn’t know what had happened, as if he wasn’t there too.
“The don’t stand there! Do something! There has to be something that can save him!” at that point Shinya was desperate, not even himself knew what he was truly asking for, for him to turn him into a vampire? Would Guren even want that? At that point, Shinya didn’t care, human, demon, vampire, whatever it would be, he wanted him back.
“Don’t you think it’s a bit late for that?” Slowly, he walks slower, as if he doing a runway show, only adding fuel into Shinya’s anger, he was now ready to actually shoot him.
“I can see why the two of you are so close, at the end of the day, you are the same” a smug smile grew on Ferid’s lips.
“The same? Oh no, I am far way worse, he’s angel compared to me” a sick laugh left his lips as he shook his head, after all, Guren had always been his moral compass, even if he had done many bad things over the years, now he could do even worse.
“It’s cute, really, but” he clapped his hands together “Suck it up, bury him somewhere deep or whatever you humans do” once again, he showed him a fake sweet smile, making Shinya throw a rock at him, it was fast and strong enough to hit him on his shoulder.
“You are a vampire, you can turn him into one” finally, Shinya stood up, getting closer to the blood sucker.
“I will do whatever you want, I will get you whatever you want, just please, please, help me!” he was way too close to him, but for some reason he didn’t feel like he was in danger.
Ferid grabbed his face, his hand was cold, he could feel his long nails pressing on his wet cheek, it was if he was studying his face or something like that, then he let him go, laughing.
“Ah, Guren what a lucky guy~ but either way, he’s not a regular human, I think you must have noticed that by now, he’s possessed, if I turn him into a vampire, it wouldn’t even be him” he shook his head, passing by Shinya and kneeling down in front of Guren’s body.
“You fought well buddy, you can rest now” he gave him a pat on the shoulder that way too friendly, it made Shinya feel sick.
“You don’t have to worry, you kept your promise, I will keep mine” for some reason, that felt honest and Shinya was very close to ask him what promises he was talking about but then he heart footsteps behind him, someone was running, they were familiar.
“Shinya!”
Shinya turned around to see his little sister, she too seemed to be injured but nothing serious, he placed himself in the trajectory of her sight so she wouldn’t see his body.
“Fe- that’s Lieutenant's sword!” she tried to get closer but Shinya stopped her, shaking his head.
“Wh- what is going on?” she felt anxious, for the first time in her life she could read Shinya’s true emotions and none of them were good ones, he appeared to be destroyed.
She managed to free her wrist from his grasp the moment Ferid moved and she saw the dead body, a gasp left her lips before she screamed, she ran there and froze in front of him. It was true, the last few months her relationship with her “teacher” had been rocky, but that man wasn’t only her teacher or senior officer, he was the one that basically saved her, Guren and Shinya had been helping taking care of her ever since she was a kid.
Her legs were shaky before they gave in.
“What happened? This can’t be true, Shinya, right? He’s strong and smart, he’s too smart to die like this!” she looked at her brother who took a deep breath, he got closer to them and placed his arm around his sister.
“Let’s take him home, then we will with who did this to him”
“Burn his body, they will try it to use it” was the last thing that Ferid said before leaving, almost disappearing like fog.
