Work Text:

Anyone taking their first look at Evie would say that she didn’t belong in the Rider’s Quadrant. Secretly, Evie believed they were right.

Pretty blonde hair and ocean-blue eyes didn’t get you very far in the 3rd Wing. Evie’s first night in the cold halls of Basgaith had left her winded and bruised — asking an asthmatic to walk three miles without a break was a recipe for disaster. And don’t get her started on combat training; Evie had yet to win a single match on the mat.

Hell, she was surprised — at first — that no one in her wing had tried to kill her yet. Stories floated from around Basgaith of attempted murder in the 4th Wing of the Sorrengail girl, and the nightmares kept Evie awake at night.

Yet, despite her fears and insecurities, hope began to flicker in Evie’s chest on the night of the Great Basgaith Road Trip.

Dragons of all shapes, sizes and breeds flew in shaky formation across the night sky. Where they were traveling, Evie wasn’t sure — but what she saw before her was glorious.

Wingleader Yan kept the lead on her red Scorpiontail, always ready to jump at a moment’s notice, Vanth and Fay at her flank. Ever present at the front, Yan never saw the ongoing badminton set between Jack and EmJay in the rear — where they got that pair of boxers to play badminton with, Evie would never know, but it was entertaining nonetheless.

“Strength isn’t the only measure of your worth, dear one.”

Long since used to Pneuma reading her mind, Evie smiled. She allowed herself to relax, situating against the back of her green Swordtail. One day, she would match the rest of her team in either brawn or brains, but today was not that day.

For now, Evie would let the wind take her wherever the 3rd Wing may go, and lend a hand where she could.

Because maybe, just maybe… Being alive and present was enough.
