Reunited

Summary:

The plan might not have been as flawless as they had believed. The one thing that Pete and Kenta failed to consider was that after Babe and Way escaped, it would be harder for the next pair to leave. That’s why Charlie and Jeff got lost while attempting to outrun the guards pursuing them in order to stop them. Kenta was also unable to leave while the two children were missing.

It took them 10 years to find the missing kids. Charlie's entry into the racing industry was the only reason they were able to do so.

Now that the children had reunited, it was time to carry out the plan to defeat Tony and release the other kids who were still imprisoned in his mansion.

Chapter Text

The sun hung high over Bangkok, casting a golden hue over "The Hollows," the famed race track alive with excitement and anticipation. Fans packed the stands, their voices a chorus of chants and cheers, a testament to their unwavering support for their favorite racers. Banners of vibrant colors fluttered in the breeze, each one a declaration of loyalty and hope. The air buzzed with electric energy, a palpable force that set hearts racing even before the engines roared to life. Mechanics hustled around the cars, their hands moving with practiced precision as they performed last-minute checks and adjustments. The smell of gasoline and burnt rubber permeated the air, mingling with the sweet scent of anticipation.

At the starting line, the tension was almost palpable. Engines growled with keen anticipation, their deep rumbles vibrating through the ground. Babe's sleek white and blue car, emblazoned with the X-Hunter’s logo, held the pole position. Its aerodynamic lines and polished finish made it look like a predator waiting to pounce. Beside him, Way’s car gleamed in the sunlight, its surface reflecting the heat waves like a shimmering mirage. Just behind them in third place was Charlie in his black and red car, a stark contrast that spoke of aggression and raw power. Completing the front row was Winner, his car a testament to unyielding determination, positioned in fourth place on the starting grid.

The signal lights blinked from red to green, and the race was on. Engines roared to life, tires screeched, and the cars shot forward like bullets. The sound was deafening, a wall of noise that reverberated through the stands. Charlie struggled initially, his car weaving through the tight corners as he fought to keep pace with his rivals. Each turn was a battle, each straightaway a fleeting moment of relaxation. Way held his ground in second place, his strategic mind calculating every move, while Babe led with flawless speed. Winner, despite his aggressive style, lagged behind, unable to break past Charlie.

As the laps flew by, Charlie found his rhythm, the earlier struggles giving way to a smooth, relentless pursuit. He managed to overtake Way in a daring maneuver, securing second place. Now, his focus was entirely on Babe. The gap between them closed steadily, the two racers pushing their cars to the absolute limit, engines screaming in protest as they demanded more speed, more power.

In the final laps, the tension reached its peak. Charlie was right on Babe's tail, their cars less than a meter apart as they sped through the curves and straightaways of The Hollows. The crowd was on the edge of their seats, their collective breath held in anticipation of the upcoming climax. Babe's heightened senses guided him with precision, but Charlie's relentless pursuit kept the pressure on.

With the finish line in sight, Charlie made his move. Drawing alongside Babe, he pushed his car to the brink, the two vehicles now neck and neck. The crowd was on its feet, the roar of the engines drowning out their cheers. It was a battle of wills, each racer pushing themselves and their machines to the absolute edge of endurance.

In a flash, they crossed the finish line. The crowd held its breath, the tension so thick it was almost suffocating. Then the announcement came: Charlie had won by a fraction of a second. The stands exploded with cheers and applause. Babe crossed the line just a heartbeat later, his face a mix of disappointment and determination. Way secured third place, and as expected, Winner finished in fourth, his aggressive style unable to compensate for the raw talent of his competitors.

As the cars coasted to a stop, the drivers emerged, shedding their helmets to reveal faces flushed with exertion and adrenaline. Charlie’s grin was wide, his eyes sparkling with the thrill of victory. Babe, on the other hand, wore a look of fierce determination, his mind already turning to the next race, the next opportunity to reclaim his throne.

The atmosphere in X-Hunter’s pit garage was thick with tension, the air practically vibrating with Babe's frustration. His pacing back and forth mirrored the turbulence inside him, his face twisted with an intensity that threatened to explode any second. Each step he took seemed to leave an imprint of anger on the floor.

North, standing nearby, watched Babe's agitated movements with a mixture of concern and uncertainty. He tried to offer comfort, his voice gentle and reassuring. "It's okay, P'Babe. You-"

"North, shut up!" Babe's voice cut through the air like a knife, echoing off the garage walls. His outburst made North flinch, and a momentary silence fell over the room.

Sonic, sensing the escalating tension, moved quickly to diffuse the situation. He gently pulled North away from Babe, his voice a low whisper. "Come on, let’s give him some space," he urged, guiding North to a safer distance.

Leaning against the wall, Way watched his brother with a knowing look, his eyes filled with a mixture of empathy and frustration. "You're mad because it’s them, aren’t you?" he asked, his voice calm but demanding.

Babe stopped pacing and turned to glare at Way, his eyes burning with anger. "If it was someone else, I wouldn’t mind. But it’s the people I hate the most," he spat, his words dripping with venom.

Alan stepped forward, placing a calming hand on Babe’s shoulder. His touch was firm but gentle, a grounding presence amidst the storm. "Calm down! We will win this season like we always do. This is just the first race. And it’s probably their last win," he said, his voice steady and reassuring.

Before Babe could respond, Winner walked in, a smug grin plastered on his face. His presence seemed to suck the air out of the room. "How does it feel to be second, Pit Babe?" he taunted, his tone dripping with mockery.

Dean and Way moved almost in unison, each grabbing one of Babe's arms to hold him back as he lunged towards Winner, his eyes locked on him with murderous intent. Babe's struggle was fierce, but their grip was stronger.

From the sidelines, Kim, who had been watching the scene unfold with a keen eye, moved swiftly. He sneaked up behind Winner and grabbed the back of his racing suit collar, pulling him away from Babe. "Do I have to remind you that you were behind all three of them?" Kim's voice was cold and sharp, cutting through Winner's arrogance.

Winner had an excuse ready, his tone defensive. "It was a problem with the car! The alignment was off, and—"

"Then let’s go see it before you get yourself beaten," Kim interrupted, dragging Winner back towards the Red Racing pit garage, his grip unwavering.

Charlie followed Kim and Winner watching them with a mix of relief and curiosity. Just as he was about to walk into their garage, James stepped in front of him, blocking his path. "We need to talk," he said, his tone serious but his eyes betraying a hint of indifference.

Charlie frowned confusion and worry etching his features. "What’s wrong, P'James?"

James sighed, his expression softening slightly as he placed a hand on Charlie's shoulder. "This is your last race with Red Racing," he said, his voice tinged with regret that seemed almost too rehearsed.

Charlie's eyes widened in shock, disbelief washing over him. "What?"

James looked down, unable to meet Charlie’s eyes. "The team has some financial problems, and our only option is to transfer you to X-Hunter," he explained, his voice heavy with the weight of his words, though his gaze occasionally flickered with disinterest.

Charlie's mind raced, trying to process the unexpected news. In all his years with the team, he never thought there would come a day when he would have to leave. "I don’t understand. Why me?" he asked, his voice barely above a whisper.

James sighed again, his grip on Charlie's shoulder tightening slightly. "I’m sorry, Charlie. It’s not personal. There’s just no other way. Alan or someone else from his team will contact you for further information. I wish you the best, Charlie," he said, his voice filled with what seemed like genuine regret, but his eyes lacked the usual warmth.

With those words, James walked away, leaving Charlie standing in stunned silence. The weight of the news seemed to press down on him, making it hard to breathe. After a moment, Charlie turned and made his way out of the garage, still reeling from the unexpected turn of events. He couldn’t bring himself to tell Kim what had happened just yet.

Kim was waiting for Charlie in his car, ready to head home. "Mom and Jeff are waiting for us. Dad is also—" Kim started, his voice trailing off as he noticed the strained look on Charlie's face.

"P'Kim," Charlie said, his voice trembling slightly.

Kim immediately sensed something was wrong, his concern deepening. "What happened?"

Charlie hesitated, glancing out the window as if searching for the right words. "Can we stop by the garage first?" he asked, his voice barely above a whisper.

Kim’s worry intensified, but he nodded, deciding not to press further. "Okay," he agreed, starting the car and driving in silence.

The weight of unspoken words hung heavily between them as they drove. As they neared the garage, Charlie’s mind was a whirlwind of thoughts. He knew he had to tell his family the news, but he couldn’t bring himself to do it just yet. For now, he would focus on collecting his things and preparing for the changes ahead.
