A week ago, you went hiking on one of the mountains in Germany.
Today, you know the mountain has eyes.
A month ago, you thought humankind was alone in the universe.
Today, you know you were wrong, and scores of people had to die to prove it.
A year ago, you shopped for clothes and jewelry at the mall.
Today, that mall is gone, having been sucked down a tunnel into a hellish underworld.
Two years ago, an explosion in Rio killed hundreds of people.
Today I am glad for the explosion, for it has saved millions of lives.
Three years ago, you believed your friend’s ship sank because the captain failed to see the iceberg in time.
Today, you know the iceberg saw the ship.
Five years ago, you heard that a woman returned to civilization after spending 57 years in a remote forest.
Today, you know that woman did not age even a month during her time in the jungle.
Decades ago, you believed your father kept silent because of undeserved trauma from the war.
Today, you know he kept silent because he witnessed a realm in which logs walk around at night.
