Work Text:
“Are you seriously telling me this would work?” Kurt’s voice strained in his whispers.
“Trust me, it would,”Blaine hushed, his voice beaming with confidence.
Kurt and Blaine felt like they were stuck in a trench while they were in their toddler daughter’s room. She decided on being little Miss Diva for an hour apparently and she was all fuzzy. She wasn’t accepting any feeds, ruling out her hunger. She didn’t seem to be possessed by the sleep devil. They took her out to the park a few hours ago and she played well enough. She followed her routine food schedule without any fuzz and she was burped enough.
Kurt and Blaine couldn’t think of anything else other than turning to her pacifier. Her violet pacifier in the theme of lady mermaids, that she loved to use before her sleep or after her eating.
Her parents knew that she would get more irritated with the loudness of their voices particularly in this situation and hence, they were whispering, which was more difficult in her whimpers filling the already chaotic room.
“This is not going to be working. I mean she decided to be little Miss Diva for the hour and-”
“Oh don’t worry. I’ll get her to accept this little one,” Blaine assured, pointing to the clean pacifier which they cleaned in warm water after she threw the last time.Kurt just wanted to throw his hands but he couldn’t see how Blaine’s plan would work.
“No Blaine! She didn’t let me near her the last time and she threw this across the room. You know how many times we disinfected it, right? I don’t think- mmph”
One moment Kurt was full on rambling on how to deal with this situation and the other moment, his voice was dampened and was replaced by little moans from his dear husband kissing him to say “shut up”in a non-rude, subtle way. It was weird to make out while their kid was whimpering and fuzzing there but Blaine didn’t care. He could make Kurt shut up for once as well as taste his intoxicating lips which he was missing so much. So it was a win-win situation!
They finally parted, with Blaine rubbing his thumb over Kurt’s cheek and Kurt was panting and blushing like crazy.
“What was I-”
“Hey,”Blaine continued soothing him, “ Trust me on this. I think this would work. Just give it a chance.”
Kurt glanced blank, still panting a little, glazing Blaine with a still uncertain.
“Yeah okay. Okay,” he approved, with a little hint of doubt.
Blaine smiled and moved towards their daughter, who was now staring at them yet kept up with her whimpers. Blaine positioned and stood on his imaginary mark, now kneeling down on knee, holding the little handle of the pacifier like a ring. A proposal ring. He took a deep breath and talked.
“My dear sweetheart, you are the little beacon of our lives. The moment we held you in our hands, we were over the moon. We knew we were going to have the best girl in the whole world.”
Blaine was holding his dovey-lovey eyes and Kurt couldn’t help but chuckle. He tried as much to control his chuckles but in vain. Had they seen anyone proposing to their toddler with a pacifier? No. Was it weird? Yes. Was it fun to watch? Absolutely!
“You are dada’s and papa’s sweet little girl and our sweet honey bear.”
Hmm, interesting. Blaine was using her favourite nickname. Blaine knew what he was doing. He was definitely doing something for more than one time. He was sure. To Kurt’s awe, their little daughter was calming down and she was listening to him very curiously, with her little hands, holding the soft rails of her cradle.
“You are our little apple pie. Our little nugget. Papa loves you so much. Dada loves you so much.”
Kurt was getting reminded of their iconic proposal as he spoke. Kurt remembered so clearly; he was melting into a goo; how he was nervous yet he knew he was making a good decision; how Blaine spoke and made him feel like he was his world; how it seemed like there were only Blaine and him, even among the large crowd from 3 different schools.
“So… Charity Alice Hummel-Anderson,” Blaine proposed to the curiously listening toddler, “Will you accept this pacifier?”
Charity’s eyes were glistening from her previous cries but she was cooing. “Dada,”she said, making grabby hands, “Dada, dada!” It seemed like the proposal plan was a win. Blaine dragged his knee on the soft carpet and helped Charity reach the pacifier. She kept making grabby hands until she reached for the pacifier and stuffed her mouth. She began to suck the pacifier gently and was finally calm, now showing the first sign of her nap time.
Blaine punched the air in victory and grinned widely towards Kurt. Kurt held his arms wide open for Blaine to fall into his embrace and he did. He held his tight, almost trying not to cry.
“That was so moving, Blaine.”
“Hey! I didn’t propose to you!”
“I know. You already did for me once and now, I can’t get rid of this ring,”Kurt reminisced that day, waving his right hand, holding his engagement ring. Blaine blushed more and rested his head on Kurt’s shoulder for more time.
A little portal of silence surrounded them, helping their daughter to fall asleep and giving them a few minutes to enjoy each other’s company.
“By the way, “Kurt broke the silence, “How did you know she will accept the pacifier this way?”
“Well…I may have shown her our proposal video and I…thought this would work.”
“Oh, “Kurt’s pupils widened, “Oh! So her dada is trying to raise her standards. Wow, you sneaky little dork!”
“Yeah, Mr.papa. You better watch out and meet her standards next time.”
Kurt let out a loud chuckle and they both laughed together.
“And that’s why I fell for you.”
“Yeah you did.”
Kurt kissed the tip of his nose and they continued their hug session till they moved together to their bedroom, after checking on their daughter. They could use a little sleep…or some hanky-panky time.
