The truck bumped over dirt roads, but she didn't care. They were jostled about on the hard seats. It was over now. Whatever she'd imagined would happen when she and Willa had raced to save Raelle, this wasn't it. Now Scylla sat with her hands tangled in Raelle's hair, with nothing but haunted memories of the evil, black web that had stolen Willa's life.
Why was everything a bargain? One thing in return for another. Abigail had her back to her, but Scylla could feel her malice coming towards her in waves from the front seat.
She brushed a thread of blonde hair back from Raelle's face and watched her closely, now so peaceful in unconsciousness. Her heartbeat raced and thudded in her ears. There were a million ways this could go, but in the end only one thing mattered. She was never leaving Raelle again.
