Hyrule awoke to something cold, and slimy on his cheek. He opened bleary, tired eyes to find the shadow standing before him with an evil grin on its face. “Having fun yet, hero?” it sneered maliciously. Hyrule coughed weakly.
“What… makes… you… think… that?” Hyrule wheezed.
The shade licked its lips as though it had finished some sort of feast. “Oh, nothing. I know I’m having fun and was simply curious to see if you felt the same. I thought you would have pulled the knife out by now.”
“I’ll admit… that I could be… considered stubborn,” Hyrule said.
“And why won’t you pull it out?” the shade wailed.
“I’m no fool… Just die … quicker death,” Hyrule answered, voice steadier than he expected. Never mind that the dagger was poking his back or that it might be going through an organ. Hyrule felt his eyes flutter.
Ganon’s ashes! his mind supplied, and Hyrule jolted - and regretted how it made the knife dig into whatever organ it was piercing.
“Your friends don’t care about you. They aren’t coming, hero,” it spat.
“See… I like… to think… that they are,” Hyrule mumbled, his voice audibly slurred, even with the pounding in his head. A clang came from above. Either one of the shadow’s enhanced monsters had dropped its weapon, or the Chain was already on their way. “That might even be them.”
“No, just my minions dropping something. I swear, I’m the only competent one,” the shade finished his sentence to himself, but Hyrule heard it anyways. The darker-than midnight colored hand grabbed the hilt of the dagger. “Let’s find out how much you can take.”
The blade twisted in whatever organ it was stuck in, and Hyrule’s vision went white from the pain. A muffled scream reached his ears.
When Hyrule’s vision returned, the shadow stood in front of him, hands covering what would have been ears.
The shade noticed Hyrule’s semi-open eyes. “Still conscious?”
“Mhm,” Hyrule answered. Something wet tickled his throat and he coughed into his tunic. He couldn’t help but notice that the sleeve came away stained red.
“Ooh, internal bleeding, how fun!” the shade crooned. Hyrule’s vision began to blur, and the last thing he saw was the shadow’s evil grin.
