Work Text:
Reincarnation was a mundane affair.
I’d died peacefully in my sleep. Though I supposed that was my fault, seeing as I’d overdosed on my sleeping pills. That was very stupid on my part.
The insomnia had gotten to me and i'd desperately needed sleep. I’d been so tired of the sleepless nights.
Reincarnation wasn’t particularly painful, but it was like a floating sensation. One moment I was peacefully sleeping, next I was a six-year old orphan.
I wasn’t particularly happy about this but then again, I wasn’t shocked. A lot of religions believed in reincarnation so I wasn’t particularly surprised.
o0o
The body that I’d transmigrated into was Kyoto, and she had no last name. She’d learnt that after the first few days of her waking up here.
Kyoto also learnt that there was some kind of war going on here, and that this world comes with a side package of superpowers.
Her first inclination to this notion was when she’d looked out the window of the orphanage and there was a man dressed in some kind of uniform walking up the side of a building, which was definitely supposed to be impossible.
Then again that would explain the strange energy she’d felt in Kyoto’s body (well she supposed it was her body now) ,while settling down for a good night rest and not really being able to sleep for a few hours, and was kind of just drifting in between being conscious and unconscious.
She tugged and played with it and it moved like honey. It was the best way she’d felt to describe it.
o0o
The con of my recent reincarnation was that I was six. I wasn’t allowed to go anywhere or do anything without some semblance of supervision. I was also surrounded by a bunch of belligerent children that couldn’t stop talking.
There was always an abundance of children, leaving or coming in that were probably war orphans.
o0o
The amount of food that was eaten was a small and portioned amount that she was sure wasn’t a healthy amount for children, though it looked like that was the best they could receive. Though it was enough to ensure they’d survive.
Kyoto was also extremely bored and had nothing else to do when she wasn’t eating with loud and messy children, or listening to stories about ‘shinobi’ from one of the matrons, or reluctantly playing with the dolls that were provided to the girls. There wasn’t really a need for her to stand out too much.
The only thing that really piqued her was when they taught her how to read and write. Her body instinctively knew how to do these things and her vocabulary was quite impressive for a six-year-old .
The language wasn’t English or French though she thought it might be Japanese or maybe Korean but she wasn’t too sure.
They were usually allowed to play outside before lunch and that was the highlight of the day because she got to climb a big tree to get away from the other children, do some more meditating, and experimenting with the energy that was in her body.
She’d done a bit of reading on the basics of chakra, which is what they call this energy here, and she really wished that she could go to the library to learn more about it, instead of asking one of the kids that went to school. She thinks they called it the ‘Academy’.
Anyway the book was enlightening, and she really didn’t even bother with thinking about the implications of her being in some kind of anime. What was it that her baby sister called it ‘chakra’ and she’s pretty sure that the word chakra come from an anime that was called, Naruto I think - anyway she didn’t want to think of the implication that there were people who could quite literally walk on water and defy physics.
o0o
Today a shinobi came in to talk to the kids about becoming a shinobi and what not. The usual propaganda to get kids to join the army, or in this case the shinobi forces.
Kyoto wasn’t too impressed with his speech, and when he’d left she left to go read the book on chakra theory an older kid had lent her.
o0o
“So, Yuko-san see any interesting kids to ship off to the academy”, Kou said. He turned to look at the ex- shinobi and she pinned him with a contemplative stare.
“I suppose there are quite a few,” she mused “Off the top of my head, I could definitely say, Maki,Kyoto, Maru, and Akio”, she listed them absentmindedly.
“Especially Kyoto. She’s been exhibiting suspicious behavior these few weeks but she’s definitely got some natural talent with chakra. She recently discovered chakra and has been experimenting with it quite often. She also is good at reading and writing. I think she’d make a good shinobi” Kou looked at Yuko with a calculative stare. Then he nodded, and sunshined away.
Thinking of the girl, Yuko wasn’t sure what's changed with the girl, but one thing was for sure, She’d make a good shinobi.

During lunch the next day one of the matrons rounded a few six year old's up and led them to the study room.Kyoto walked to a seat in the second last row on the right and plopped down.
“Today you will be taking a test to see if you are fit to be shinobi” , the matron announced, then she paused as the room quickly erupted in the whispers of excited children. Kyoto’s tilted her head now paying full attention to the matron. After the noise died down she continued, " Once I finish passing out the papers you may begin. If you talk you fail"
She began passing out the papers to each of the kids. As soon as Kyoto got the paper she began. All the questions were fairly easy for her, her only problem was reading the kanji , though she got it easily enough. The first five questions were on math, Kyoto had no trouble with that, though for the other kids it could've been challenging. This was followed by simple reading and writing questions.
This collectively could've taken her a few minutes to do, but to not arouse suspicion, she spent longer on each question. When she finished she flipped the paper over and turned her head to look out the window.
Forty minutes later the matron took back the test papers, and led them outside to play.
Kyoto doesn't really mind if she becomes a ninja. She just doesn't want to be stuck in the orphanage for life. She also wants to defy physics.

Kyoto gets put in class B4 with the civilian kids as well as kids that have shinobi parents but aren't clan children. She got placed in an apartment building along with another girl from the orphanage named Anko.
She never interacted with many of the other girls in the orphanage, but Anko was always acting up and being annoying. she'd even tried to fight her once. she was really dreading this situation .
Kyoto is slightly surprised that she's been sent to live alone with another twerp since they're both six. She suspects that this is the norm and everything. She supposes she should've expected that, with the way things work here. They definetly use child soldiers.
But, then again she gets put in an apartment building with a lot of other shinobi as well as orphans. She thinks that the leader deliberately put them their so they could be checked on or something. Her next door neighbor is definitely a ninja and she’ll have to pester him about teaching her how to fight when she gets the chance.
o0o
Kyoto's first semester starts in two weeks. Its the third day of staying here and she's going insane. Anko always tries to start a fight every day, leaves her stuff all over the apartment, and she even ate the snacks she'd gotten for herself.
Kyoto holed herself up in her room to not have to deal with Anko, but it's not like she can spend all day reading about the history of Konoha that she got from the library .
Kyoto sighs heavily and puts the book down at her bed side. She hops off her bed silently cursing her current height and shuffles into the living room where Anko's sitting and still eating her chips loudly while getting crumbs everywhere.
Anko smirks triumphantly while staring Kyoto. Kyoto closes her eyes and takes several deep breaths and forces herself to remember that she's mentally thirty-four and she wasn't going to let this six year old get a rise out of her.
She promptly spins on her heels and walks towards the kitchen and opens the fridge. She closes the fridge turns right back around and stomps into the living room. "Anko where the hell's the rice I made for myself ? "
Anko grins right back at her, "I ate it. Whatcha gonna do about it ya stuck up princess". Anko hops of the couch while dusting of her hands. Kyoto blinks at her calmly, as a few seconds go by and nothing is said. Kyoto and Anko stare at each other. Kyoto decides that shes done putting up with Anko's bull.
Kyoto tackles Anko to the floor and all hell breaks loose. Anko starts pulling Kyoto's mid length hair and in retaliation Kyoto bit Anko. Then Anko bit back, to which Kyoto punched her hard in the face. She continues to punch Anko in the face until she lets go. Kyoto pauses her assault to look at Anko's face , she has a newly bruising black eye, as well as a bloody nose. There are small tears in the corner of her eyes.
Kyoto jumps off Anko like she's a hot iron and scurries off to her room before slamming the door behind her.
o0o
Kyoto's lying awake and it's probably near mid-night. She feels bad for beating Anko up, though she supposed it was bound to happen anytime now. She probably owed Anko an apology even though Anko was the one being shitty.
She'd finished the book she'd been reading already, and started on the next one though she hadn't gotten too far with that seeing as she'd been distracted. She sighs heavily, and she'd been doing that a lot since she moved into this apartment.
She supposes that she'll try to attempt that trick she saw in the book. They called it 'The leaf exercise'. She quietly slips out of her room. She slides on her sandals, unlocks the door and quietly walks out.
The air outside was very refreshing and she'd almost forgotten why she'd come out here in the first place. She just stood out their and basked in the silents for a few moments before squatting down and picking up a nice orange color leaf. The weather was still hot , though at night it got quite cold.
She sat down on the cold hard floor and closed her eyes while recalling the instructions of the exercise. She placed the leaf on her forehead and focused some chakra to were the leaf was.
The leaf stuck to her forehead for a few seconds before falling off. She repeated this until the leaf stuck for some minutes, before letting it fall to the ground. She looked around for a bit until she saw some leaves stuck on a spiderweb and plucked them off. She sat down again and placed the leaf back on her forehead, then, while the leaf stayed in place, she added more leaves. They stuck for a total of about 5 seconds before falling off. She repeated this process until she could stick several leaves onto her body in different places while moving around.
By the time she'd managed to accomplish this, there was only a few hours left until dawn. Kyoto yawns tiredly and shuffles off to bed feeling much better than she'd felt in a while.
o0o
Kyoto wakes up feeling groggy and she thinks she may have over done it earlier. She sighed and rolled off her bed and walks lazily to the bathroom. She took one look at her bed head and decided that she should probably comb her hair.
After brushing out her bed hair she looks in the mirror and decides that she doesn't really need all the hair on her head and decides to cut it shorter.
She mourns the loss of her beautiful hair but decides that it is for the best. She briefly combs out her hair to make sure to get out any extra knots, then she ties back the front part of her hair to make sure it doesn't get in the way while brushing her teeth. She decides to leave her hair like that and walks out of her room.
She walks into the living room only to be confronted by Anko's angry glare. Anko huffs and turns her head away. Kyoto ignored her and walked to the kitchen. She contemplates what to eat for breakfast, and she settled for an egg sandwich.
Kyoto should probably learn how to cook some of the dishes native to fire country, but that's for another day. While making the egg sandwiches she thinks that she should probably make one for Anko, though she hopes Anko actually eats it like she ate the rest of her food and snacks.
Kyoto thinks that this is probably the best time to apologize to the girl for beating her up. As she finished making the sandwiches she brought out some plates to put them in before walking out of the kitchen and into the living room where Anko is sitting while reading a comic.
Anko looks up from where shes reading and narrows her eyes at Kyoto. Kyoto grabs a pillow off of one of the run down couches and places the plates on the table. "What the hell do ya want now. Just wanna rub your victory in my face ya prick." , Anko says through gritted teeth. Kyoto winces and inwardly grimaces at the bruises on her face.
She sighs at Anko and pushes a plate with a sandwich towards Anko. " I wanted to apologize for hitting you yesterday" Anko scowls harder and snaps "I don't want or need your damn apology or ya charity" Theirs a beat of silence before Anko's stomach betrays her and starts to growl loudly
Kyoto raises a brow at her and Anko blushes. Kyoto sighs and says, " It isn't charity. I just realized now that you probably don't know how to cook for yourself and resorted to stealing my stuff. Next time just ask to share and I'd even make some food for you."
Anko doesn't reply and Kyoto breaks eye contact and stands up and walks out of the room only to come back a minute later with a novel in hand as well as two cups of orange juice and places it down on the table before sitting down again.
Kyoto promptly eats while reading her book ignoring the strange looks Anko sends her. Anko hesitantly reaches out her hand before quickly grabbing the food like it would be taken away. She takes a bite and scarfs down the rest of her food and finishes her orange juice. When Kyoto finishes she takes her and Anko's plates and washes them before coming back to the living room sitting down and reading her novel.
Anko stares at Kyoto in surprise, and then she looks back down at her comic, picks it up and continues reading.
Kyoto thinks that maybe she could survive being roommates with Anko Mitarashi after all.
o0o
Kyoto's eye twitches slightly annoyed by her recent predicament. She wasn't under the impression that after she passed that damn test , she'd be moved into an apartment with everyone. Anko hadn't even taken the test with her but here she was dreading going back to her new apartment in fear of that brat being there to piss her off.
Kyoto sighed and began to make her way back home when she abruptly remembered wanting to go to the library a while back. It wasn't like she had anything else to do. She was already close to her apartment building so she decided to unpack her groceries and go back out to the library.
She wasn't too sure where the library actually was but was pointed in the direction of the library by a nice lady that was probably a kunoichi. The library was actually right next to the academy, and was even close to the Hokage tower.
Kyoto stood in front of the large doors of the library, feeling slightly intimidated by the sheer size of it. She walked up the stairs and pushed the doors open. Kyoto was enthralled by the sheer size of the library, as well as the design. The interior was mostly decked out in Hashirama wood with little intricate design everywhere you looked.
"What a brat like you doing' here.”, a large man loomed over Kyoto as she craned her neck to look up at the tall figure. He was easily over six feet tall. Kyoto was momentarily at a loss for words because, why the hell was he so tall! The man raises an eyebrow and Kyoto flushes at her momentary loss of manners.
She bows slightly, and seeing as she couldn't sense anyone else in the area, assumed he was the librarian. "I am here to get some books to read.", Kyoto cringes at how robotic her voice sounds and looks back up at the man . He peers down at her in what she assumed to be an assessing glance before he silently waved her of to continue as she was.
Kyoto was all too happy to get away from the man and the awkward interaction. She finds a few books she wants to take back to her new apartment and approaches the man again and requests to take it home.
The man agrees to let her take it home but warns her that she'd have to pay for any damages. Kyoto thanked him and happily made her way back to the apartment.
(After many visits to the library, Kyoto later learns that the man's name was Senju Harata. Kyoto files that information away for later analysis and continues with her life.)

"Why do ya always read books", Anko suddenly asks Kyoto a few days after the 'incident' or so Kyoto dubbed it. Kyoto tilted her head slightly in Anko's direction as she thought about how to respond. "I've always liked reading books, usually to learn new things or just for fun." Anko nodded her head seemingly pacified by this response.
Ever since Kyoto had apologized for hitting Anko, they'd developed a tentative friendship. Anko had taken to asking her random questions at whatever opportunity she got.
Kyoto was mildly amused, when Anko started following her around like a Duckling. When she went to the market to shop Anko followed close behind, (though she usually ends up getting lost so Kyoto has taken to holding her hand, besides it often gets them stuff for cheaper , bless the civilians bleeding hearts. ) .
Anko had even taken it upon herself to practice with her chakra as soon as she noticed Kyoto sticking a leaf to her finger with chakra, much to her amazement. Anko had even followed her to the library and mopped about until Kyoto had found the books she'd wanted.
Kyoto found it very funny to watch Anko try and fail at the chakra exercises it reminded her of her si

A month before summer, Tetsu-sensei surprises Kyoto's class with a joint training session. Shu-sensei takes them out onto the joint training field where they are joined by classes B4 and C4.
Kyoto is thoroughly intrigued by now and is curious about what they were supposed to do. After a few minutes the graduating class for this year walks out. there's a brief pause, the sensei waiting for the students to calm down.
"Today we will be testing class A1 on their leadership skills. Each of the students from class A1 will get 3 students from each of the following classes. You will be given a scroll and as a team leader it will be your responsibility to get you and your team to the point that is designated on each scroll. You will be designated to different locations to report too in the nara forest you have until noon to reach your location. The test starts now, find your team and go!"
The once quiet training ground erupted with activity as the students from class A1 paired off with their teams and began making their way to their locations. Kyoto was one of the last ones there as her team leader finally managed to find them.
Kyoto shuffles closer and peaks over Obito uchiha's shoulder. The boy is nervously laughing while fighting with the map and Kyoto can already tell it would be a disaster as they make their way to the Nara forest.
oOo
They'd barely been in the forest for 5 minutes and they were lost. Kyoto sighs as she sits down and leans up against the tree.
"Seems were lost", commented her team leader as though she needed the reminder. The boy next to her, who she should probably know the name of sits next to her and nervously twiddles his thumbs.
"Perhaps we should learn each other's names first, before continuing", Kyoto suggests, seeing as they weren't doing anything else. Each person properly introduces themselves.
Kyoto picks up the map from the stop that it was placed in and takes a look around. Kyoto realizes that the big tree that she's leaning on is a checkmark of the map. She stands up quickly and announces that she knows what direction to go in.
oOo
When Kyoto's team finally arrives at their destination it's nearly noon. Kyoto hands over their scroll to the ninja and he lead them back to the school and gives Obito's sensei his scroll
"Thanks Kyoto-kun you really saved us back there", Obito claps her on the back. She gives him a half smile and pointedly ignores the fact that he thinks that she's a boy.
o0o
Summer was finally here and Kyoto couldn't be happier. As she walks out of the Academy doors, she's greeted by several families picking up or congratulating their children for graduating.
Kyoto feels a slight pang in her chest, before she feels her hand being tugged by Anko. She walks slowly despite the insistent hand tugging for Anko, looking for black spicky hair in the sea of people. She sees Obito and smiles at him as she waves. Since the group exercises, Obito and Kyoto always greet each other whenever they have the chance.
Anko pouts slightly and tugs Kyoto's hand ruffly. "Kyoto-kun!", she turns her head to see Obito running in her direction. Kyoto turns to Anko and waves her hand in her direction as Obito begins dragging her away.
Anko huffs and stomps off. "I'll meet up with you soon", Kyoto yells over her shoulder, feeling bad for leaving her. Obito had dragged her all the way over to what she presumed was his family.
"So this is the famous boy i'd heard all about?", Kyoto bows slightly looking at the woman who spoke. "It's nice to meet you", Kyoto says after an awkward pause.
"Go on boy, introduce yourself '' Kyoto looks at the boy that's probably close to her age. He sticks out his hand , smiling so hard that she could see his dimple. "My name is Shisui. Nice ta meetcha !"
Kyoto smiles at him, taking his hand. "Congratulations Obito", Kyoto smiles and bows again, and the boy waves at her as she turns around and walks off unaware off her inner turmoil.
Kyoto's sure she's heard of the names Shisui and Obito she just can't remember where. Kyoto shakes off her thoughts and runs to catch up to Anko.
(Later Kyoto does in fact remember where she'd heard those names from. They'd come from her sweet da sister. She remembers it now like it was yesterday after one of her dreams. Kyoto doesn't want to think about it anymore. She inhales and exhales. This might come back to bite her in the ass later. She just hopes that her interference might change the future. She doesn't want Obito to suffer)
o0o
The first time Kyoto sees her neighbor, she'd been walking back to her apartment with Anko when she saw a man in crutches unlocking the door to the apartment right next to theirs.
He hobbles into his apartment before closing the door.
Anko doesn't seem to notice , too busy yapping on about the snake sannin. Kyoto tunes her out because she gets creepy vibes from the snake sannin, and it's not cause she doesn't like snakes.
Kyoto opens their apartment door and takes off to go take a long warm shower. By the time she gets out of the shower she decides how she's going to properly meet her neighbor.
o0o
Kyoto wakes up late the next day, having spent the night in a training ground. She'd read about chakra augmentation from one of the books she'd borrowed from the library. She regrets having read the book, seeing how sore her muscles were now. She hadn't been channeling her chakra the right way and ended up making less progress than she'd wanted too.
She'd been too eager to learn this skill with her young body. Kyoto supposes she'll focus on the actual building of her muscles before she tries again.
She lazily rolls off her bed feeling the strain in her legs as she stands up.It takes her a great amount of effort for her to make it to the bathroom. She brushes her teeth and decides to take a shower, much to the displeasure of her muscles.
After a long, shower she wears a black shirt and orange shorts. Kyoto's hair now reaches her shoulders, but she decides against cutting it. She walks out of her room. Anko's probably gone out to visit one of the friends she'd made in class C4. Kyoto was just glad Anko had made another friend, though she hadn't interacted with Umino a lot, he wasn't half bad .
o0o
It's a quiet day When Kyoto turns seven, not bothering to mention her birthday to Anko. She lets the day come and go feeling anxious for some reason. That night, she gets some more of her memories back
o0o
Kyoto's walking back home after a training session. Anko had somehow come down with a cold the day before that wasn't gone yet. She'd walked down to the apothecary that was close to the hospital and bought her some expensive cough medicine.
Kyoto absentmindedly moved the lollipop in her mouth around and looked up at the cloudy sky.
"Kyoto-kun!", Kyoto turns her head when she hears the familiar voice, and slows to a stop so Obito could catch up. He grins and she smiles back, his happiness contagious. "Haven't seen you in a while, how's life treating you. "
Obito proceeds to talk about his teammates Nohara Rin and Hatake Kakashi as well as his sensei, Namikaze Minato. He tells Kyoto about how 'cool' and 'nice' Nohara was and how prideful and annoying the prodigy was. He continues talking about his sensei and his sensei's girlfriend Uzumaki Kushina.
She files all this information away in her head to mull about later.
At some point they'd taken a turn and ended up near some Akimichi owned restaurants.
"Wanna go get something to eat. I'm hungry.", Kyoto shook her head stating that she had to take care of Anko.
"Maybe next time", Kyoto says reluctantly, reminding herself that she didn't have enough money.
" 'Kay see you 'round Kyoto-kun! " , Kyoto sigh before walking off in the other direction. Being broke sucked for her.
o0o
It takes two weeks before Kyoto actually gets around to 'Bumping into her neighbor'. She didn't want to disturb his peace, since he was clearly injured. Her plan was to back something and offer it to him while smiling at him kiddy style.
Kyoto actually had to buy a cooking book cause she didn't know how to bake for shit. She just hopes he likes sweet things.
o0o
Kyoto's not even sure if he liked her cookies, When she knocked on the door he'd smelled like he'd just come out of the shower or something.
"Hello, it's nice to meet you!", Kyoto cringed at the sound of her voice and practically shoved the tray of cookies in his face. He blinked down at her general direction, And Kyoto wasn't so sure he was actually listening to what she said.
There was a full beat of silence before he'd finally acknowledged her.
"So you're one of the brats that moved in next door. Shoo kid. Go back busy playing with your dolls or something."
He then proceeded to grab a cookie from the tray and slam the door close. Kyoto feels very offended.
Kyoto does not stomp back to her apartment and whoever says otherwise is a fool.
At least Anko appreciated her cookies.
o0o
Kyoto continued her stretches as the kid nervously stutters something. Anko had decided to bring her little friend along.
"What did you say ?" , Kyoto lazily stared at the boy, looking over him. He blushed even harder fumbling with his fingers. Anko sighed and rolled her eyes. "Iruka wants ta join us for training"
"I don't really care if he joins us but you better make sure he keeps up ."
Thus started the tentative friendship between the trio.
o0o
Kyoto does see Obito from time to time but rarely ever long enough to talk. So she was quite shocked to find him dragging his younger cousin Shisui . He look so in (Is that how small she is ?) Shisui had been pestering Obito to train with him and had bumped into the trio while on the way to training ground seven.
Obito and shisui ended up joining them, and that made for an interesting training session.
Kyoto does find out that shisui would be joining the academy next year. Usually they join later but one thing leads to another along with Shisui's prodigy status.
Obito does make for a good sparring partner. Kyoto thinks that the training session was very productive, the only con being the bruises because, why the hell did Obito hit that hard.
o0o
Kyoto had been visiting the library from time to time, absorbing all the information she could. When Kyoto goes past the academy level stuff Harata dutifully ignores it.
It was only a matter of time before Kyoto bumped into a book on basic fuinjustu. It hadn't given much information on how to use it , but from what she can just tell fuinjustu would be useful in the long run.
She wants more information though, so she asked Harata.
One thing led to another, and she was saddled with fuinjustu lesson that extended to taijustu and chakra control. The ex-shinobi had been all to happy to bully teach her.
It's safe to say that the rest of Kyoto's summer was full of activities.
Kyoto dodged under a kunai that was meant for her left leg, before making a beeline for the tree as the kunai kept coming.
Kyoto then proceeded to do a text book back flip to get away from the kunai that could have potentially taken her eye. She reminisced about the days when attacking children was illegal.
She cursed as she tripped over a tree root and just barely managed to twist her body to minimize the damage from the fall. Harata, the bitch snorted at her awkward position on the floor.
Kyoto slowly stands up and scowls up at the man.
"I asked for fuinjustu training, not to learn how to dodge kunai !", Kyoto feels frustration bubble up in her chest.
"Your handwriting isn't nearly good enough for fuinjustu yet. Even then you have to learn how to apply chakra to a seal. ", Kyoto huffs before scowling down at her hands. Even though she could write with both of them her handwriting wasn't good enough. All she'd been doing was practicing her handwriting.
It's harder than the man thinks it is. Her mind wants to write with her left hand, the one she was previously familiar with versus her right hand, the one this body was used to.
It's kind of hard to control her left hand because this body wasn't used to it, but as they say 'old habits die hard'. Kyoto just settled on learning how to use both. It was harder than it sounded.
Harata's large hand landed on Kyoto's hair before ruffling it , making it tangle ."Go home kid. I expect you here at this training ground at six sharp. " Kyoto sighed and turned around already thinking about the warm bath she would take when she got home.
o0o
Kyoto flopped down on the grass ,ignoring the soreness that she felt in her arms and legs . Iruka and Anko were sparring, using the academy style. Shisui sat down next to her watching the fight. It was the day before the academy started up again.
Shisui had already passed the entrance exams earlier that day. Kyoto and Anko had waited for him outside of the academy gate. They had briefly paused to say hello to Obito's grandmother, which she'd belatedly realized was also Shisui's grandmother.
They then dragged shisui to a dango stall that was near the academy and bought some, before bumping into Iruka out shopping with his parents. Anko had promptly grabbed his hand .
They ended up just going to a training ground that's reserved for academy students.
Kyoto had wanted to relax at home and relish in the bittersweet feeling of having to go back to school. Kyoto groans and throws her hand over her eyes. She hated school.
"Kyoto-chan what do you think about being a ninja", Kyoto sat up and looked at Shisui. He blinked back eyes pure with innocence. eyesthathewouldn'thaveanymorewhenhe died . Kyoto looks up at the sky , not knowing what to say. She settles for the text-book answer that he wouldn't believe for a minute. He was just smart like that. A true prodigy. Not like her. Compared to him she was just the Walmart version.
"I think that it's great to protect our village.", Kyoto says it with nonchalance, knowing that he would just accept the answer and not press.
Why did she want to be a ninja anyway? Sure orphan life sucked but it wasn't that bad. She could have just gone to a civilian school or gotten an apprenticeship. She could have just failed the test or failed her way out of the academy.
She Looked over all the people she was currently friends with.
Kyoto snorts and curses her bleeding heart. Well, if she died she would at least feel like she made an impact on people.
o0o
The academy had started up again. Everything was fine up until a month ago when she got taken out of class A3 and moved to class B2. Apparently the academy sensei had come together and decided that she was too good to stay in her current grade and moved her up a grade.
Kyoto was very behind on the current curriculum, and taijustu was a struggle. It's not like she wouldn't be able to catch up academically, compared to her classes in college it was child's play. Her only real problem was the taijustu training.
They decided to pair her up with a Hyuuga. He had more than two years worth of taijustu training and probably had more opponents too. Safe to say she had lost every taijustu battle she'd fought against him.
She wasn't always paired up with him but it was a very near thing.
On the bright side, Kyoto was able to start her fuinjustu training with her shishou. (She'd taken to calling Harata that. It was funny to see the man get flustered) on the weekends.
She still had taijustu training with him. Kyoto surprisingly found the training useful when dodging her opponents, and had even managed a win against the Hyuuga.
The only problem with this was that her first lessons were spent learning how to mix fuinjutsu ink with blood. The first few times the ink had exploded it got all over her clothes and was very hard to wash off. She resigned those clothes to only be used while doing fuinjustu.
o0o
Her shishou had started teaching her how to handle kunai, and the same week her sensei had taught them how to do the Transformation technique and the clone technique.
Kyoto got it easily enough since her shishou had taught her how to manipulate chakra using hand seals. Harata had held off from teaching Kyoto any justu. Kyoto had been slightly disappointed at the time, but she got over it.
Sadly the same week Kyoto had to start joining her fellow kunoichi in attending kunoichi classes. They teach the girls about flower arrangements codes and whatnot . The only useful things they learn are about seduction, though she wonders how weird it is that eight and nine year olds have to learn about seduction. She doesn't dwell on it though.

Kyoto learns that two students from her year have already graduated. Shisui had gotten pushed up a year as well. Kyoto thinks the war must be getting really bad if Konoha had started allowing third years to graduate.

Kyoto and shisui graduate on the 14 September, both respectively seven and eight. That was the day that Kyoto signed her death sentence.
