Summary:

It’s a winter of firsts for everyone.

It’s Colin and Penelope’s first winter as a married couple.

It’s Penelope’s first time putting on ice skates and venturing onto the frozen lake with the entire Bridgerton family.

It’s Colin’s first time watching the ice crack, just barely out of reach, and seeing his wife disappear into the murky water below.

Notes:

I know, I’m still in the middle of the fire story - but I couldn’t help it.

I started writing this before part 2 of season 3 dropped, so there are some things that don’t quite line up (such as characters leaving for far away who haven’t in this story) but not much.

Chapter 1: A Joyous Gathering

Chapter Text

The Bridgerton estate stood proudly amidst the rolling hills, now blanketed in a pristine layer of snow.

Each tree branch glistened with delicate frost, transforming the landscape into a winter wonderland.

The morning sun cast a soft golden glow over the snow, causing it to sparkle as if embedded with countless tiny diamonds.

A crispness filled the air, invigorating the senses and promising a day filled with joy and excitement.

The grand Bridgerton house was a sight to behold, its stately architecture adorned with festive winter decorations.

Wreaths of evergreen, adorned with bright red berries and silver ribbons, hung from every window and door. Icicles, like delicate crystal daggers, dangled from the eaves, catching the light in a dazzling display.

The entrance was framed by two large, ornately decorated trees, their branches heavy with candles.

Inside, the estate was a hive of activity.

The warmth from the roaring fireplaces spread throughout the halls, mingling with the scent of pine, cinnamon, and freshly baked pastries. The Bridgerton family and their guests bustled about, laughter and cheerful conversations echoing through the spacious rooms.

In the drawing room, Violet Bridgerton oversaw the preparations with a serene smile.

She wore a deep green velvet dress that complemented the season, her silver hair elegantly pinned up.

She directed the servants with practiced ease, ensuring that every detail was perfect for the day's outing.

Near the large bay window, which offered a breathtaking view of the snow-covered grounds, Penelope stood in quiet contemplation, six months a Bridgerton.

She was wrapped in a rich burgundy shawl, her auburn hair falling in loose curls over her shoulders. Her cheeks were flushed with anticipation, and her green eyes sparkled with the reflected light of the snow outside.

She watched as the Bridgerton children played in the garden, their laughter ringing out as they built snowmen and engaged in playful snowball fights.

Penelope's heart swelled with happiness. Her marriage to Colin, still fresh and filled with the promise of a shared future, had brought her an overwhelming sense of belonging and joy. Today, she looked forward to spending time with him and his family, making memories that would last a lifetime.

The sound of footsteps drew her attention, and she turned to see Colin approaching. He wore a dark blue coat that highlighted his broad shoulders, a matching scarf draped loosely around his neck. His eyes, the same shade of blue as a clear summer sky, were fixed on her with an affectionate gaze. He smiled, and Penelope felt her heart skip a beat, as it always did whenever he looked at her.

"Enjoying the view?" Colin asked, his voice warm and teasing as he joined her by the window.

Penelope nodded, her smile mirroring his. "It's breathtaking. The estate looks even more beautiful in the snow."

Colin slipped an arm around her waist, pulling her close. "Not as beautiful as you," he whispered, his breath warm against her ear.

Penelope laughed softly, leaning into his embrace. "Flatterer. But thank you."

“Are you sure you’re ready for this, Penelope?” Colin asked, his tone teasing but his eyes filled with genuine affection.

Penelope smiled, her nerves easing in the warmth of his gaze. “As ready as I’ll ever be. Just don’t laugh too hard when I inevitably fall.”

Colin chuckled, pressing a kiss to her temple. “I wouldn’t dream of it. Besides, I’ll be right there to catch you.”

Their exchange caught the attention of Eloise, who sidled up to them with a mischievous grin. “Oh, this I have to see. Penelope on ice – I can’t imagine anything more entertaining.”

Penelope laughed, her cheeks flushing slightly. "Well, I aim to provide entertainment, if nothing else," she retorted, her eyes sparkling with humor.

"Don't listen to her, Pen," Anthony interjected, clapping a hand on her shoulder. "Eloise is just jealous because she's been known to have a few spectacular falls herself."

Eloise shot her brother a mock glare. "That was one time, Anthony, and I was eight years old!"

Kate laughed, linking her arm through Anthony's. "I seem to recall it happening more than once, Eloise."

The room erupted in laughter, the warmth and camaraderie of the family evident in every interaction. Penelope felt a swell of gratitude for being part of this boisterous, loving family. She looked up at Colin, who was grinning down at her, clearly enjoying the banter.

"Don't worry, Penelope," Daphne said, joining the group with Simon at her side. "We're all in this together. Besides, I have a feeling you'll be a natural."

Simon nodded in agreement, his deep voice adding to the assurances. "Just follow Colin's lead. He's always been steady on his feet."

Colin raised an eyebrow, feigning modesty. "Well, I wouldn't say always. There was that one time—"

"Don't you dare," Benedict interrupted, pointing a gloved finger at Colin. "No one needs to hear about that particular incident."

Penelope laughed, feeling more at ease. "Now I'm curious. What happened?"

Colin leaned in, lowering his voice conspiratorially. "Let's just say it involved a particularly slippery patch of ice and an impromptu dive that would have impressed even the most skilled of swimmers."

Benedict groaned, while the others laughed heartily. Penelope felt a rush of warmth and belonging, the nervousness about skating fading away in the light of their humor and affection.

As the final preparations were made, Violet Bridgerton entered the room, her presence immediately commanding attention. "Is everyone ready?" she asked, her tone gentle but authoritative. "We should be heading out before the sun gets too high."

A chorus of agreement followed, and the family began to gather their things, ready to embark on their winter adventure. The younger children, bundled up in thick coats and scarves, were already bouncing with excitement, their high-pitched voices blending into the joyful symphony of the household.

As they made their way outside, the crisp winter air greeted them, filling their lungs with its invigorating chill.

The snow crunched underfoot, and the world seemed to sparkle with a magical quality. Penelope looked around, taking in the beauty of the estate in winter, the grand house standing proudly amidst the pristine white landscape.

Colin tightened his grip on her hand as they walked towards the waiting carriages.

"Are you sure you're ready for this?" he asked again, his eyes twinkling with mischief.

Penelope nodded, her earlier apprehension replaced with excitement. "With you by my side, I think I can handle anything."

They climbed into one of the carriages, joining Daphne, Simon, and their three small children.

The interior was warm and cozy, a stark contrast to the cold outside. As the horses began to move, the carriage jostled slightly, and Penelope found herself nestled closer to Colin, who wrapped an arm around her to steady her.

"So, Penelope," Daphne began, her tone light and conversational, "do you have any more secret talents we don't know about? Perhaps you're a hidden ice-skating prodigy?"

Penelope laughed, shaking her head. "I'm afraid not. My talents are more suited to quieter activities, like reading and writing. But I'm looking forward to learning today."

Simon smiled, his dark eyes kind. "You'll do just fine. And if you do fall, just remember, it's all part of the fun."

The carriage ride was filled with light-hearted conversation and laughter, the family's closeness evident in every exchange.

Penelope felt a warm glow in her chest, grateful for the love and support that surrounded her.

She glanced out the window, watching as the frozen lake came into view, its surface smooth and glistening under the winter sun.

As they arrived at the lake, the group disembarked from the carriages, their breath visible in the frosty air.

The lake was a breathtaking sight, framed by snow-covered trees and bathed in the golden light of the morning sun.

The ice looked inviting, promising an afternoon of joy and adventure.

Colin helped Penelope onto the ice, his grip firm and reassuring. "Just take it one step at a time," he advised, his voice calm and steady. "I'll be right here with you."

Penelope took a deep breath, feeling the cold air fill her lungs, and nodded. "Alright. Let's do this."

As they began to skate, the rest of the family spread out across the ice, their laughter and shouts of encouragement filling the air. Penelope wobbled at first, her legs unsteady on the slippery surface, but Colin was there to support her, his presence a comforting anchor.

"See? You're doing great," Colin praised, his eyes sparkling with pride.

Penelope smiled, feeling more confident with each passing moment. The cold air stung her cheeks, but the warmth of Colin's hand in hers kept her steady. They glided across the ice, the world around them a blur of white and gold.

"Thank you," Penelope said softly, looking up at Colin. "For everything."

Colin smiled, his expression filled with love. "Always, Penelope. Always."

Today was a day for making memories, and as she skated with Colin, she knew that this moment would be etched in her heart forever.

As the family settled into their ice-skating rhythm, Colin gently guided Penelope towards a quieter part of the lake, away from the bustling activity of the others.

The ice was smooth and unmarred, reflecting the bright blue sky above.

Colin held Penelope’s hand firmly, offering support as they moved to a more secluded spot framed by a small grove of evergreen trees.

“Are you feeling alright?” Colin asked, his voice soft and filled with concern.

He looked into Penelope’s eyes, searching for any signs of distress.

Penelope smiled, feeling the warmth of his love in his gaze. “I’m more than alright, Colin. This is wonderful. Thank you for bringing me here.”

Colin’s eyes softened, and he pulled her a little closer, their skates gliding in perfect harmony. “I’m just happy to share this day with you. Seeing you out here, with the snow and the ice, it feels like a dream.”

Penelope laughed lightly, her breath visible in the cold air. “It does feel a bit like a fairy tale, doesn’t it? I never imagined I would be here, skating with you on a beautiful winter day, surrounded by your wonderful family.”

Colin’s expression turned serious, and he stopped skating, turning to face her fully. “You’re part of that family now, Penelope. Our family. And I wouldn’t have it any other way.”

Penelope’s heart swelled with emotion. “I never imagined I could be this happy, Colin. Growing up, I always felt a bit out of place, like I didn’t quite belong anywhere. But with you, with your family, I’ve found my home. You’ve given me a sense of belonging I’ve never felt before.”

Colin cupped her face in his gloved hands, his touch gentle despite the layers of fabric. “You belong with us, Penelope. You belong with me. Every day, I thank the stars that you chose me, that you’re part of my life. I can’t imagine a future without you.”

Tears pricked at Penelope’s eyes, and she blinked them away, not wanting to miss a single moment of this beautiful day. “I love you, Colin. More than words can say.”

Colin leaned in, pressing a tender kiss to her. “I love you too, Penelope. More than I ever thought possible.”

They stood there for a moment, wrapped in their own world, the sounds of the family’s laughter and the gentle swish of skates on ice fading into the background.

Penelope closed her eyes, savoring the feeling of Colin’s arms around her, the security and love that his embrace always brought.

Breaking the silence, Colin pulled back slightly, his eyes sparkling with excitement. “You know, I’ve been thinking about our future. About all the adventures we’ll have together, all the places we’ll go.”

Penelope’s curiosity was piqued. “Oh? And what sort of adventures do you have in mind?”

Colin’s grin widened. “Travel, for one. I want to show you the world, Penelope. Take you to places you’ve only read about in books. We could start with Italy. Venice, Florence, Rome. Imagine us, wandering through ancient streets, exploring art galleries, tasting the finest food.”

Penelope’s eyes lit up at the thought. “Italy sounds magical. I’ve always dreamed of seeing those places. And with you, it would be even more special.”

Colin nodded, his enthusiasm infectious. “Then it’s settled. We’ll make plans, and as soon as the weather warms up, we’ll set off on our grand adventure.”

Penelope’s heart soared at the promise of future travels, of shared experiences that would deepen their bond. “I can’t wait, Colin. It sounds perfect.”

Colin’s expression softened, and he squeezed her hand gently. “But for now, I’m just grateful to be here with you, in this moment. Today is about us, about making memories with our family. And I want to savor every second.”

Penelope leaned into him, resting her head against his chest. “You always know just what to say, Colin. I feel so lucky to have you in my life.”

Colin kissed the top of her head, his lips lingering for a moment. “It’s not luck, Penelope. It’s destiny. We were meant to find each other, to share this life together.”

They stood there, wrapped in each other’s arms, the winter landscape around them a perfect backdrop to their love. The world felt still and peaceful, as if it were holding its breath, allowing them this private moment of connection.

Eventually, Colin broke the silence, his voice filled with a playful lilt. “Now, shall we return to the others? I think it’s time to show them what a magnificent skater you’ve become.”

Penelope laughed, feeling lighter than she had in days. “Magnificent might be a bit of an exaggeration, but I’m willing to give it another go.”

They skated back towards the group, their hands intertwined, their hearts beating in sync.

Despite her initial nervousness, she found comfort in Colin’s steady presence.

He guided her gently, his grip firm and reassuring.

“You’re doing great,” Colin encouraged, his voice filled with warmth. “Just keep your knees slightly bent and let your body move naturally.”

Penelope smiled, her cheeks pink from the cold and the exertion. “I’m trying. It’s just a bit... slippery.”

Colin chuckled. “That’s the nature of ice, my dear. But look at you – you’re already more confident than when we started.”

Penelope laughed lightly, her breath visible in the cold air.

Around them, the Bridgerton siblings showcased their various skating abilities.

Daphne and Simon skated gracefully, their movements synchronized as if they were dancing. Eloise and Benedict engaged in a playful race, their competitive spirits igniting as they sped across the ice.

Nearby, Anthony and Kate held hands, their expressions relaxed and happy. Even the younger Bridgertons, Gregory and Hyacinth, were laughing and chasing each other, their youthful energy contagious.

At one point, Colin released Penelope’s hand, skating backward in front of her with an encouraging smile. “Alright, Penelope, try it on your own. I’m right here if you need me.”

Penelope took a deep breath, focusing on her balance. She pushed off tentatively, her movements wobbly at first but gradually becoming more assured. “I’m doing it!” she exclaimed, her eyes wide with delight.

Colin beamed. “I knew you could. Look at you, skating all on your own.”

Penelope’s laughter rang out, a joyful sound that mingled with the winter air.

She glanced around, taking in the sight of the Bridgerton family and their friends, all immersed in the festive spirit of the day.

It was a scene of pure happiness, a moment she would treasure forever.

As she skated, Penelope noticed the subtle beauty of the ice beneath her feet. The patterns formed by frozen bubbles and cracks created a delicate mosaic, a reminder of nature’s artistry.

Anthony was in the midst of showing off an impressive skating maneuver when he spotted them. "Ah, there you are!" he called out, waving them over. "Ready to try some fancy moves, Colin?"

Colin laughed. "I'm not sure if we're up for fancy moves just yet. Penelope is still finding her balance."

Penelope smiled, feeling a mix of pride and nervousness. "I think I can manage a bit of a twirl, though."

The family gathered around, cheering and offering words of encouragement as Colin guided Penelope through a gentle spin. She felt the world whirl around her, the cold air biting at her cheeks, but Colin’s steady presence kept her grounded. As they finished the spin, the family erupted in applause.

“Well done, Penelope!” Daphne called out, her voice filled with genuine delight.

“You’ve got the hang of it now,” Benedict added, grinning. “Soon you’ll be giving Colin a run for his money.”

Penelope laughed, feeling a warm sense of accomplishment.

She glanced down at the ice, noticing again the intricate patterns and subtle cracks that made up its imperfect beauty.

“You’re a natural, Penelope,” Colin said as they slowed to a stop, his voice filled with pride.

Penelope’s heart swelled with happiness. “Only because I have such a wonderful teacher.”

They shared a tender kiss, their breath mingling in the cold air. Around them, the sounds of the family’s joy continued, creating a backdrop of warmth and love.

As they resumed skating, Colin pointed out various members of the family, sharing anecdotes and memories. “Did you know Anthony used to be terrified of ice skating? When we were children, he refused to step on the ice without holding Mother’s hand.”

Penelope laughed, glancing over at Anthony, who was now confidently guiding Kate around the ice. “I can’t imagine Anthony being afraid of anything.”

Colin grinned. “Oh, he had his moments. But he’s always been the protective older brother, looking out for all of us.”

As the morning wore on, the group continued to skate, their laughter echoing across the lake.

Children raced each other, their high-pitched giggles filling the air, while the adults engaged in friendly competitions and playful teasing.

The sense of camaraderie and happiness was infectious.

Eloise skated over to Penelope, her cheeks flushed from the cold and the excitement. “You’re really getting the hang of this, Penelope. I’m impressed.”

Penelope smiled, grateful for the compliment. “Thank you, Eloise. I was a bit nervous at first, but it’s turning out to be quite fun.”

Eloise grinned, a mischievous twinkle in her eye. “Just wait until we convince Colin to try one of Benedict’s ridiculous ice-skating challenges. That’s when the real fun begins.”

Penelope laughed, feeling a surge of affection for Eloise and the rest of the Bridgertons. Despite their differences, they had welcomed her with open arms, making her feel like she truly belonged.
