Work Text:
As the Yule Ball approached, nearly every student was consumed with the task of finding a date for the event, which was considered one of the most significant occasions in a Hogwarts student's life. You, however, remained indifferent to the find a good date part, content with the idea of attending alone. Being an introvert, you preferred the solitude anyway. Nonetheless, you accepted Luna's invitation to accompany her to the Ball as friends, knowing it would be a shame to miss out.
The day of the Yule Ball slowly arrived and the Great Hall was transformed into a winter wonderland with enchanted snowflakes falling gently from the ceiling, disappearing just before they touched the heads of students. The effect created the illusion of a starry night sky, adding a touch of magic to the already enchanting atmosphere. Floating candles provided a warm, flickering light, while enchanted ice sculptures emitted a soft, ethereal glow. The staff had truly outdone themselves this time, you mused, impressed by the breathtaking view as you entered the Hall.
So now, here you were, sitting on one of the benches near the buffet, casually munching on a random snack you grabbed from the table. Luna had just left your side after Neville approached her for a dance. You knew she had a crush on him, and seeing her happiness, you had eagerly encouraged her to go (read: shoved Luna to Neville because they were both too shy to take the initiative). From your seat, you could see them dancing together, their faces glowing with joy. It was a heartwarming sight and you couldn't help but smile as you observed them enjoying every moment of their dance.
"Mind if I sit here?"
The voice was smooth and familiar. You turned to find Draco Malfoy standing behind you, impeccably dressed in a white tuxedo that contrasted sharply with his platinum blonde hair, neatly parted in the middle. His usual smirk was absent, replaced by an unusually careful expression.
"You can, I don't mind," you replied, gesturing to the empty seat beside you.
Draco settled beside you, and a comfortable silence enveloped the two of you. The Hall was alive with laughter and music, the twinkling lights casting a warm glow over the elegantly dressed guests who swayed and twirled on the dance floor. You found yourself absentmindedly watching them, your thoughts drifting as the melodies filled the air.
"So," Draco started after a while, his voice breaking the silence, "not dancing with your partner?"
You shook your head, offering a small smile. "Didn't find one, but it's okay. I don't mind."
Draco's expression softened from boredom to understanding. "Fair enough, honestly. Most of the blokes here wouldn't know a thing about etiquette anyway." His gaze shifted across the room to where Hermione Granger sat on a staircase, her shoulders shaking as she sobbed. "At least you're doing better than Granger over there," he mused, a hint of amusement in his voice.
"That's a bit... harsh, Malfoy," you chided gently. "But thanks."
"Anytime," he replied with a faint smile.
The music continued and you found yourself lost in the rhythmic flow of the evening once more.
"So, why are you here? You were with Pansy, no?" you asked, curious about his reply. Draco's smile faltered for a moment. "Let's just say that she found the company of Nott over there better." He nodded towards the dance floor where Pansy and Theodore were dancing, their faces lit with happiness.
"Oh, I'm sorry," you said, giving him a sympathetic look. "They do look quite happy together."
"No, it's okay, really," Draco said, brushing it off. "We only went as friends anyway. And she really does look much happier with him than me."
"Guess we're both alone then, huh?" you joked, trying to lighten the mood. Draco laughed, a genuine sound that surprised you. "Seems so."
As another song began, Draco stood up and faced you, extending his hand. "Actually," he said, a playful glint in his eyes, "I was hoping you'd want to accompany me to the floor? It would be a shame to miss out on the dance after all, now that we're here."
You chuckled, feeling a warmth spread through you. "Sure, Malfoy. I'll gladly accompany you," you said, placing your hand in his.
He led you to the dance floor with a confident stride, and as you began to sway to the music, he leaned in slightly, his voice low and sincere. "You look gorgeous tonight, by the way, L/N. The color suits you really well. Thought I should mention that at least once."
A smile spread across your face as you met his gaze. "Thank you, Draco," you replied, feeling a flutter of excitement.
"On a first-name basis already, are we?" He teasingly said.
"Oh shut up, Malfoy."
The two of you moved gracefully to the rhythm of the music, the world around you fading into a blur of lights and colors. In that moment, surrounded by the magic of the evening and with Draco, you couldn't help but feel happy about how Luna may have abandoned you for this.
As the night wore on and more students drifted away to retire or find quieter corners, you and Draco decided to take a break from the dance floor. The energy in the Hall was starting to wane, and the music had mellowed to a soft hum in the background. You both wandered back towards the courtyard, the cool night air a refreshing contrast to the warmth inside.
Finding a quiet bench, you sat down, feeling the fatigue of the evening settle in. Draco followed suit, sitting close enough that your shoulders almost touched.
"Well, I enjoyed this night way more than I thought I would, Malfoy. Thank you," you said, turning to him with a genuine smile.
Draco leaned back, a satisfied look on his face. "You as well, L/N. You were a pleasure to be with."
A comfortable silence enveloped you both, the distant sounds of the dwindling party and the gentle rustle of leaves providing a soothing backdrop. You glanced at Draco, noticing the way the soft light highlighted his features, making him seem almost ethereal.
"Can I ask you something?" you asked, breaking the silence.
"Of course," he replied, his tone inviting.
"Why did you really choose to spend the evening with me?" you asked, your curiosity getting the better of you.
Draco took a moment to respond, his gaze thoughtful. "I think... I was looking for something real. Something different from the usual pretense and expectations that comes with being a Malfoy. And when I saw you sitting there alone, you looked like you felt the same way. I thought maybe, for once, I could be myself without any masks."
You decided to put your head on his shoulder, understanding exactly what he meant. "I'm glad you did. It's been a while since I felt this... at ease."
Draco put his arm around you in respone and smiled with a genuine warmth in his eyes. "Likewise."
As the stars shimmered above, you realized that this evening had been more than just a dance. It had been a chance to see another side of Draco Malfoy, and perhaps, for him to see another side of you.
"You know," Draco said after a while, his voice soft, "tonight doesn't have to end here. We could... keep talking. Get to know each other better."
You felt a flutter of excitement at his words. "I think I'd like that."
And so, you continued to talk, sharing stories, dreams, and secrets under the starlit sky. The night had started with unexpected companionship and ended with the promise of a deeper connection. And yet you both knew that this was just the beginning of something wonderful.
