Chapter 1: A Homeless teen and Two campers

Chapter Text

The air grew cold as the sun set over the Autumn hills of downstate New York. Not much sound except a few crickets chirping.

The silence was broken by a teen in a raggedy green jacket, combat boots, and ripped jeans ran past. His green eyes darted around as he looked for a hiding place. Behind him a loud bark echoed through the forest, a hound close on his tail. The teen quickly foraged through his pockets and found a tiny bag, he threw it on the ground causing a big explosion of dust filling the air. The hound winced as he kept running, now with his eyes closed. He was too distracted to notice the two figures in front of him. They collided, the two new people yelled and screamed as they rolled down the hill.

“Dude what the fuck!”

A pale kid with Green hair, Dr Martens and a bright orange tee shirt screamed. “Yeah, that was so uncalled for-” the blond one added in the same orange tee. They were immediately shushed by the first.

“It’ll hear us, shut up…”

The three, now covered in dirt and at the bottom of a hill, all quieted.

The two younger looking looked in fear as the hound sniffed around the top of the hill. Luckily it lost the trail and went the other way. “Now can you see why-” A sentence was forming as the teen looked at the blond ones legs. As if in a trance he stared. The others exchanged glances before the blond spoke. “Ok two things, one it's rude to stare, and two, you can see them?” The teen broke from his trance and simply said. “You’re a satyr. How the hell is that possible?” He quickly stood up frightened. “Yeah, but you’re not supposed to be able to see that, unless.” The satyr began inspecting the teen. “Hey personal space! I don't even know either of your names yet.”

“Juno”

The satyr said while they still inspected him.

“Why should I give you my name?” The other jetted at him.

“Elliot, be nice” Juno shot right back.

“Hey, rude. Anyway, now you have to give us your name!” Elliot said. “And if I don't?” The teen joked “I'll stab you” In that moment a dagger appeared out of Elliot’s pocket.

“Elliot, what did Zander tell you! Stop threatening people with your dagger!” “Fine,” Elliot said as it went back in his pocket.”

“Fine, my Name’s Loki.”

The teen spat out with a hint of fear.

At that moment Juno stepped back, “He may be one of you, I have a feeling. How long have monsters been bothering you?” “Since my mom died so like, 3 years.” They both looked up. “Oh, sorry for your loss.” Juno muttered. “Nah it's fine, She was a bitch anyway.” Loki laughed. “Well we should get back to camp now, Lets go.” Juno began walking with Elliot trailing behind.

Loki’s mouth hung open with an annoyed expression “Well bye I guess.” “No you're coming with.” Juno said, turning around. “Why?” “Because you could be like Elliot.” They said, “What does that even mean!” He yelled “Is that a bad thing or what, because if you're gonna sit here and insult me I'm just gonna go!” “I mean you could be a half blood!” They yelled back. “And what is that?” Loki crossed his arms “Only the coolest thing ever!” Elliot yelled “It’s where one of your parents is a god! Mine's Hermes!” He put his hand on his hips and let out a big grin.

Juno hit them across the back of the head.

“You weren't supposed to say that yet!” Loki looked at the two dumbfounded “That would explain where my dad was.” He muttered in disbelief. How could he, A homeless teen who has had to survive the New York forest running away from monsters for 3 years, have a god for a parent? “Come on! I think you’ll fit right in!” Juno smiled warmly.

Loki began taking a few steps forward, this might have just become the craziest day of his life.

The three walked for a bit through the forest till they reached an opening. A Marble that looked like it was straight out of a fantasy book met them, ‘Camp Halfblood.’ Loki was gonna take a moment to think of what he was doing but he was dragged in by the two normal campers. Loki was skeptical as he walked along the empty dirt paths of camp. He passed many cabins but one particularly caught his eye. ‘Cabin 9’ the top read, as his eyes went down the smell of sulfur and ash hit the air. He smiled, Loki has always enjoyed tinkering from a young age and would do anything to be able to do it again, maybe here he could.

The trio wandered along the path till they got to a larger building. Purple siding lined it and it seemed pretty welcoming as the three went inside. The room almost looked like a doctor's waiting room, a desk with a bell and many chairs against the walls. Juno went up and rang the bell, the sound echoing through the room. Then suddenly a head popped out from a doorway and scared Loki. Purple hair tied back into a braid, green and orange horns and piercing white eyes. “Alright, what did Elliot do this time-” The eyes then fixated on Loki. “Oh, who do we have here?” The purple haired figure fully walked into view.

Loki jumped back at the height of the man. The man also looked startled. “Shit, sorry did I scare you?” his pointed ears leaned down.

One thing Loki learned through living on the streets, don't trust adults, they’re always out to hurt you directly or not.

Loki readjusted and held steady. “I didn’t expect you to be as tall as you are.” Loki muttered while looking to the side. “Oh, my bad” The adult laughed, sounding weirdly nice. “I’m Zander, the activities director of camp.” He walked forward and held his hand out to Loki. There was an awkward pause as Loki looked at zander’s hand. “And you are?” Snapping Loki out of his trance “Yeah, Loki.” He awkwardly shook Zander’s hand.

“Zander, what's taking so long!” A voice yelled from behind the door. “Well Elliot didn't do anything wrong this time, In fact he and Juno brought back a new camper!” He yelled back. They all heard shuffling before the man showed himself in the doorway. A man with a dark gray beard and hair showed himself, he was plump and held a diet coke in one hand. The man looked at Loki with eyes that felt like they were piercing his skull and he sighed. “Of course this would happen late at night.” He moaned as he went up to Loki. “Who are you?” he glared. “This is Loki-” Zander was cut off. “I asked the boy not you, sometimes I wonder why you even were told to work here.” Zander turned red and looked away.

“I'm Loki, what's it to you?” he glared back. The man let out a chuckle, “You seem like an interesting kid, I’m Mr D” he said softening his gaze. “What does D stand for?” Loki asked.

“Dionysus.”

Loki’s expression went blank.

First he met a kid whose dad is Hermes, then he met Dionysus.

As if Mr D realized what happened he laughed. “Exactly what I was expecting. Anyway, welcome to camp, you can stay in the Hermes cabin for the night and we can address things in the morning.” He turned around and gestured to Zander to follow. The two walked back into the room but before closing the door Zander waved and gave a warm smile to Loki. Loki, obviously confused by all this new information, stared at the door before Elliot broke the momentary silence.

“You get to sleep in my cabin for the night! How cool is that!” He beamed. “Amazing,” Loki danced his hands up in the air sarcastically. Then Elliot grabbed one of his wrists and dragged him off. “Hey I can walk you know!” he yelped “And? I don't care.” Juno began trailing after them. “Be nice,” Juno said as they caught their breath.”

Elliot then stopped dead in his tracks, Loki almost fell over before he caught his feet. “This is my cabin!” The cabin looked like a normal log cabin. ‘Cabin 11’ was printed along the top, it seemed to be a bit bigger than the others but overall welcoming. “You may need to sleep on the floor but you can sleep next to my bed! And I think we have leftover sleeping bags.” Elliot began to walk forward. “Night El!” Juno yelled “Good night Loki, I hope you enjoy your stay!” They said as they ran off, waving. Loki waved back.

“Lok, get your ass over here!” Elliot yelled. “Lok? That's new” Loki said, walking into the cabin. Almost everyone was asleep, the ones who weren't mumbling to the others. No one paid attention to the newcomers. El grabbed a red sleeping bag from the box and walked over to the corner. “This is my bunk.” He loudly whispered. Exiled to the back corner, Elliot had a messy bottom bunk with a suitcase underneath. “You can put your sleeping bag here.” He said, pointing to the floor space next to the bed while handing Loki the sleeping bag. “Thanks,” Loki muttered. He laid the sleeping bag across the floor and got in, by the time he laid down Elliot was already snoring.

Loki tossed and turned not able to get much sleep still repeating to himself. ‘This is the craziest day of my life.’
