Preface (Please Read):
In this AU, I have tried my best to be as historically accurate as possible in terms of setting. Unfortunately, there are some large plot holes I am going to be up front about and I’m just going to ask you as the reader to suspend disbelief and accept for the purpose of the story.
- The beginning of this story takes place in 1714, during the golden age of piracy. I wanted to retell the story of Hypnosis Mic but on the Atlantic Ocean between sailors with and against the law. Unfortunately, Japan as an archipelago was isolated from the rest of the world until the Dutch arrived in the Year 1600. Other nations tried to trade with Japan, but got forced out. The Dutch were only allowed to trade with Japan because they were the only nation that did not try to convert them to christianity. Because of this, Japan was almost completely closed off from the western world until they finally opened their borders in 1853. Because of this, Japan was not part of the Golden Age of Piracy, and there would also be no Japanese sailors on any of these ships. I’m just going to ask if you could just roll with the fact that Ramuda is a Spanish noble and that Jyuto is part of the British Navy.
- There is no parallel I can attach to Chuuoku. What I’m rolling with is that Chuuoku is the British Navy. Of course, no women would actually be in power in the British Navy in 1714. It would also make Jyuto, Rio, and Rei work for Chuuoku with is also not accurate, but it is as close as I think we are going to get.
- Ignore language barriers. Just do it. Please.
- It is a fact that Hypmic is kinda gay and I love that for them. Reading inbetween the lines, many pirates (and sailors in general) in the world’s history were on the less heterosexual side with their actions. I admittedly have not done as much research as I should have about this specific topic, but let's just say that these guys’ homoerotic shenanigans are fine and keep our sillies as they are. I am not going to consider what the effects of late 1600s childhoods would do to these guys. I am going to make some ships canon (see tags) and probably add more as I feel like it. I know a bunch of dating pirate captains isn’t realistic, but this is still fanfiction and I can go whatever I want with it.
- Things went much slower in the 18th century. It took several weeks to get anywhere by ship, if not months. For this reason, I have taken liberties to stretch out the timeline of Hypnosis Mic a couple years. Characters will age.
- I have done research about the time era that this takes place in extensively, but in terms of story, I am completely making it up as I go along. Sorry. This is, in fact, Ao3 and not a novel. The current plan is to write the prequel with the TDD arc, and then make it up from there. I may continue to follow the manga, or make up my own plot. We’ll see. I’m sure some ships will become canon. (Haha? Get it? Cus, ships? And canons?....I’ll leave now)
Narrative Context (This is the nerdy shit, you don’t have to read it if you don’t want to):
I’m going to set the historical context on where we are in time. I’m not going to get into any kind of detail, but I'm just going to give you an idea of how things are and why they're like that so you can understand the character’s new motivations in a different setting.
Europe wants spices. India has spices. But going over land takes sooooo long, and going around Africa is too much of a detour to really make it worth it. Christopher Colombus got funded by Queen Isabella I of Spain to fund his trip of trying to go around the world west and arrive at India. (Yes most people thought the earth was round in 1492.)
Turns out, some land was in between Europe and India. A little something that is today known as the Americas.
Europe finds out about new land; they colonize it. Colonies pop up all along the coast and they start shipping raw materials and never before seen items to Europe and eventually triangle trade starts. (I will not be talking about the slave trade during this time, but it is an important part of history you should know about if you don’t. I just want to keep this fic as light hearted as possible. Sure Hypmic had its dark moments, but buying and selling human beings is not something I want to get into in this fic.)
Now sea trading is happening all the time. During the war between Spain and Britain, sailors were hired as privateers as essentially untrained navy to attack other ships for the war effort. After the end of the war, these privateers have no jobs and don’t know how to do anything else. So, they continue doing their thing without crown permission, making them pirates.
Pirate motivations are not to bury treasure. Only Sir Francis Drake ever did that in the late 1500s. Most pirates were sailors that were forced into piracy by being captured by other pirates. The cycle continues and they are outlaws. What makes a pirate a pirate is looting ships. Pirates would loot food, supplies, medicine, people, and only then gold if there was any.
I could go infinitely into more detail, but I’ll stop there for now. Feel free to comment any further questions and I will answer them.

- Jakurai is a religious fanatic (rather than a metic) and was voted to be a captain. Hitoya is part of his crew as well as Hifumi and Doppo.
- Jakurai is 25 when he meets Hifumi and Doppo who are both 19.
Dotsutiare Hompo
- Starts out as a pirate
- Rosho joins as a pirate
- Rei works for the British Royal Navy
- Sasara is a captain on the ship Samatoki gets a job at and they get to know each other and they eventually become co captains. The Mad Comic Dialogue burns and sinks and Sasara switches to a new ship. He meets Rosho at a pub and gives him one of his ships. They work with Rei to try to undermine the British Navy.
