Chapter Text
Sophie patiently waited atop GCPD Headquarters for her confidential informant to show up. Her hands were buried inside her double breasted belted black coat that provided strong protection against the December air. She had traded in the standard issue Crow white button up for a gray turtle neck that nipped at her chin. As she looked across the city, steam rose from every high rise as people nestled inside for warmth.
“Are you ever going to come down here and stand next to me so we can talk like normal people?” The Crow asked the vigilante that knelt on an unfinished square concrete structure behind her. She landed there stealthily but after so many encounters Agent Moore was used to detecting the small amount of noise her landings made.
“We aren’t ‘normal’ people Agent Moore” Batwoman stared back at the Crow as her long cape flapped in the wind.
“New wig?” Sophie noticed that the red and black curls seems much longer than normal. They looked long enough to perhaps be chest length.
“Do you want the information or are you going to stand there and continue to analyze the fullness of my lips and the design of my eyelashes?” The vigilante stood up and crossed her arms over her chest.
“So...the hair is chest length...even if it is a wig”, Sophie thought to herself.
“What do you have detective?” She switched back to Crow mode to obtain the resources she needed.
“I infiltrated the gang. I can tell you where and when some top lieutenants will be showing up. I can put names to some faces and tell you where some of them lay their heads.” Batwoman was stern in her report.
“Wow...that’s great...if you came down here...maybe we could discuss the details….” Sophie was cut off by Batwoman throwing her a thumb drive.
“Everything I’ve found is on the drive.” Batwoman unfolded her arms and pointed at the Crow. “You need to switch to the third number I gave you next time you contact me. The first two numbers won’t work anymore. I also can’t go back undercover in that group….they’re starting to get suspicious around me and some are familiar with my face.”
Batwoman turned to do her hero leap off the building when the Crow called out to her.
“So a group of Gotham low-lifes can see your face but I can’t? We’ve been working together for over a year….you don’t trust me?” Sophie was almost pleading as she took two steps toward where Batwoman was standing.
Batwoman looked over her left shoulder so the Crow could see one of her eyes. She tried to soften her tone. “If I thought all you wanted was to deepen our professional relationship...I would consider it. But by the way you look at me Agent Moore...I can tell you want more than that. More than I am ready to give you or anyone.”
Sophie tried to speak but she felt like she had something caught in her throat. She rolled her lips inside her mouth, closed her eyes and fiddled with her coat belt before she collected herself to speak.
“It was just a joke….for your safety and mine...I can never know who you really are. Thanks for the reminder.” Sophie turned and began walking toward the roof access door when Batwoman called out to her.
“You’ve never left without watching me jump off the roof….I was starting to think it was your favorite part.” Batwoman turned completely around and smiled at Agent Moore’s back.
“Goodnight Batwoman.” Agent Moore opened the creaky door and disappeared into the dark stairwell. For the first time ever, the vigilante knew the feeling of looking into the void for someone that vanished from the rooftop.
