Work Text:
Eleazar was exhausted. He’d fallen from a great height, managed to crawl away and to find Philip again, and was now helping him to prevent the cavern’s ceiling from collapsing. His ribs were on fire and he didn’t know how he was able to stand, yet he persevered.
Looking at his side, he could see Philip’s magic beam flicker, then stop entirely. He collapsed on the ground, and Eleazar rushed to his side.
“Philip?” he asked, hearing his voice echo in the massive cavern.
“I-I think I managed to secure it, but I don’t know if we can leave. I love you, dad.”
“What do you mean?... Philip?” he asked again, panic in his voice.
No response.
Eleazar checked his son’s pulse, feeling nothing. He didn’t know if he could stand, much less carry Philip out of there.
He hugged Philip and wept, his tears falling on Philip’s face. Nothing mattered anymore. He had lost the last family he had.
