There is no me without you.
He said it so plainly, an obvious answer to an unspoken question, one that neither of them had dared to put forth even after all these years. Too loud within the space between them, lingering too long before the cool night air brushed the words against his cheek, tangled through the ends of his freshly dyed hair.
He turned his head, instead tipping his chin towards the stars above. With the mountainside pressed along his back, he could almost count the nervous beats trembling outwards from the man beside him.
We’re rivals, after all.
