To say he had scars was an understatement.

Hugo came from difficult times, as from the time he was born he was taught to steal and lie, nabbing from both the richer and the poorest of the people in Ingvarr.
He didn't know when he was born, how he was born or what he was born to, but he knew one thing.
He wasn't born to live a life of poverty, and that he knew for sure, and he sure as hell stuck by it.
Although most of his ‘heists’ were successful, the occasional scratch from a broken window or a tussle with the previous owner of the stolen items would leave him bruised and with new cuts on his body. Over the course of a few weeks, the red lines would scab over, then turn white, and Hugo would have a new brushstroke to the masterpiece that was him.
He smiled.
Back then, Donella had called his scars ‘disappointments’ and referred to them as evidence of his failures. After Hugo would retreat to his room, he would glare at them in hatred, angry tears welling up in his eyes and he gazed down upon them.
But Varian had taught him to heal, Varian had helped him through his past traumas which related to Donella and that life, and Varian had helped him to learn that his scars weren't evidence of his past failings , they were evidence of his growth and how much he had changed since he officially joined Varian and his crew on their journeys.
Now? His scars reminded him of the past sure, but they also brought him to look at the future with hope, that even if he does get a few more scars, he’ll be able to make them with people like Varian, and Nuru, and Yong, and maybe even Varian’s friends.
That would be nice.
