We can't be friends (wait for your love)

Summary:

I didn't think you'd understand me
How could you ever even try?
I don't wanna tiptoe, but I don't wanna hide
But I don't wanna feed this monstrous fire
Just wanna let this story die
And I'll be alright

We can't be friends
But I'd like to just pretend
You cling to your papers and pens
Wait until you like me again

Wait for your love
Love, I'll wait for your love

Notes:

Hi! I'm new to writing and i'm not a good writer. English is not my main so yeah, bare with me. I also don't know how to use the tags. Basically, this work inspire by the mashup of Chaewon and Yunjin i found on twitter. I suggested to read this while listening to We can't be friends (wait for your love) - Ariana Grande.

Work Text:

It was the kind of night that made Yunjin miss Chaewon even more. The sky was painted with the deepest shade of indigo, the stars twinkling like they were winking at her. She stood alone at the edge of the pier, the salty breeze playing with her hair, the waves gently lapping against the wooden planks beneath her feet. In her hand, she held a worn-out notebook, filled with countless scribbles and doodles of Chaewon. Her eyes scanned the words, her heart aching with every syllable.

"We can't be friends," she whispered to herself, tears welling up in her eyes. "But I'd like to just pretend. You cling to your papers and pens, wait until you like me again. Wait for your love, love, I'll wait for your love." Her voice was laced with sadness and longing, echoing through the silence that seemed to envelop everything around her.

She remembered the first time they met, in the library of their high school. Chaewon had been sitting at a table, engrossed in a book, her long, raven-black hair falling over her face. Yunjin had been instantly captivated, drawn to her like a moth to a flame. They had become inseparable, sharing their dreams, their fears, their secrets. But then, something had changed. Chaewon had started to pull away, treating Yunjin more like a nuisance than a friend.

And now, here she was, standing at the pier, the notebook filled with memories and promises that would never be fulfilled. "I'll wait for your love," she whispered again, her voice barely audible over the gentle lapping of the waves. "I'll wait for your love, and maybe that's all I need." But deep down, she knew that she couldn't keep waiting forever. Sooner or later, she would have to let go and move on, even if it meant leaving a piece of her heart behind.

The breeze picked up, rustling the pages of the notebook, as if Chaewon's own words were trying to comfort her. "We can't be friends," they seemed to say, "but we can be something more." It was a fragile hope, a threadbare thread that connected them across the distance, but it was all she had left.

Yunjin closed her eyes, taking a deep breath. The saltiness of the air stung her nostrils, reminding her of the countless times they had walked along this pier together, laughing and dreaming of a future that now seemed impossibly out of reach. She reached into her pocket, fingering the tiny piece of pier charm, a memento of their time together.

Opening her eyes, she looked out at the ocean, the vast expanse of water that stretched out before her, seemingly endless and infinite. "One day," she whispered, her voice strengthening, "I'll find someone who loves me the way I love you." And with that, she tore the last page out of her notebook, folding it carefully and slipping it into the pocket of her jacket. Then, turning around, she began to walk away from the pier, towards the rest of her life.

The wind picked up, swirling around her, as if the sea itself were trying to say goodbye. But Yunjin didn't look back. She knew that she couldn't keep waiting for a love that might never come. Instead, she took a deep breath, lifted her chin, and started to walk forward, ready to face whatever the future had in store for her.

And as she walked away from the pier and the memories it held, she felt a weight lifting from her shoulders. She might not have Chaewon by her side anymore, but she knew that she would carry their love with her wherever she went. Because even though they couldn't be friends, their love had changed something inside her, had made her stronger, had shown her that she deserved to be loved, truly and deeply, just as much as anyone else.

And so, with a newfound sense of determination and hope, Yunjin stepped out into the world, ready to find her own happiness, her own love, and to make a life for herself that was worth living. Because she knew, deep down, that even though things might have ended between them, their story wasn't over yet. It was only just beginning.

She moved to a new city, found a job she loved, and started to make friends. She didn't tell them about Chaewon or the notebook or the pier, because it felt like a secret now, something precious that belonged only to her. And maybe that was for the best. Maybe it was time to let go of the past and embrace the future.

Slowly but surely, Yunjin began to heal. She went to parties and concerts and art galleries, living life to the fullest. She learned how to dance, how to cook, how to speak a new language. She traveled the world, tasting new foods and seeing new sights, and with each passing day, she felt herself growing stronger, more confident, more sure of who she was and what she wanted from life.

But despite all of this, there was always a part of her that ached for Chaewon. She wondered how she was doing, if she was happy, if she had found someone else to share her life with. Sometimes, when the nights were dark and quiet, Yunjin would close her eyes and imagine that they were back on the pier, the saltiness of the air, the sound of the waves crashing against the shore. She'd remember the way Chaewon would laugh, the way her eyes would light up when she talked about her dreams.

Over the years, when on one fine day, as she was walking through a crowded market, Yunjin felt a familiar hand grab hers, pulling her to a stop. She turned around, her heart racing, expecting to see Chaewon standing there. But it wasn't her. It was someone else, someone who looked eerily similar.

"Excuse me," the woman said, her voice soft and familiar. "Are you...Yunjin?"

Yunjin's heart skipped a beat. She couldn't believe it. There, standing in front of her, was Chaewon's twin sister, Yuri, a woman she had never met but had heard so much about. The resemblance was uncanny, down to the same bright eyes and infectious smile.

"Um, yes," she managed to say, still trying to process what was happening. "It's nice to finally meet you."

The sister smiled warmly and took a step closer. "It's nice to meet you too," she said. "I've heard so much about you from my sister. She talks about you all the time."

Yunjin's heart sank. She couldn't believe that she was actually standing here, face-to-face with Chaewon's twin, and all she could think about was how much she missed her. She wanted to tell the sister everything: about their time together, about the promises they made, about the notebook and the pier. But she couldn't bring herself to do it. Instead, she forced a smile and changed the subject.

"So, how long have you been in town?" she asked, trying to make conversation.

Yuri seemed surprised by the change in topic but recovered quickly. "Oh, just a few days. My sister and I are actually here for a family reunion."

"That must be nice," Yunjin said, her voice a little wistful. "I wish I had a big family like that."

Yuri looked at her kindly. "You know," she began, "sometimes family isn't just about blood. It's about the people you choose to surround yourself with, the people who mean the most to you."

Yunjin felt a lump form in her throat. She wanted nothing more than to tell Yuri that she understood what she meant, that Chaewon was that person for her. But instead, she just nodded, grateful for the reminder.

As they continued to chat, Yunjin couldn't help but feel a sense of longing for Chaewon. She wanted nothing more than to have her back in her life, to have the old friendship they once shared. But she knew that things had changed, and she couldn't go back to how they were before. She had to move forward, to find her own happiness and make a life for herself.

Yuri seemed to sense her emotions and gently placed a hand on her shoulder. "You know," she said softly, "it's okay to miss her. But don't let that hold you back from living your own life. You have so much to offer, and the world is full of wonderful people who can love and cherish you."

Yunjin looked up at Yuri, her eyes filling with tears. "Thank you," she whispered. "I needed to hear that."

As they continued to talk, Yunjin found herself opening up to Yuri, sharing stories and laughter. She felt a connection with her that she hadn't felt with anyone else in a long time. It was as if Chaewon had never left her side. When the sister finally had to leave to attend the family reunion, Yunjin felt a pang of sadness, but also a newfound sense of hope. Perhaps, somehow, this encounter was a sign that she was moving forward, that there was still joy and love waiting for her in the world.

Later that day, as Yunjin walked away from the market, she reached into her pocket and felt the notebook and the keychain with the pier charm. She smiled to herself, knowing that she would always carry a piece of Chaewon with her, but also knowing that she was capable of finding happiness on her own terms.

She decided that from now on, she would live her life to the fullest, cherishing each moment and each memory. And maybe, just maybe, someday she'd find someone who would love her as much as Chaewon did, someone who would make her feel as whole and complete as she once did. Until then, she would continue to write in the notebook, documenting her journey and all the people she met along the way.

As she rounded the corner, a familiar breeze brushed against her face, carrying with it the salty scent of the ocean. She looked up and saw the pier in the distance, the waves crashing against the wooden planks. For a brief moment, she considered going back, to sit on the bench and look out over the water, just like she used to with Chaewon. But then she remembered the Yuri's words, and she smiled to herself. Today, she would write a new memory, one of hope and love and the promise of a brighter future.

Making her way to the pier, Yunjin pulled out her notebook and began to write, the pen gliding across the page as her thoughts flowed freely. She scribbled down the date and the title: "A New Beginning." As she looked out over the water, she felt a weight lift from her shoulders, as if she were finally able to let go of the past and embrace all that lay ahead.

But as she wrote, she couldn't shake the feeling that she wasn't alone. Glancing up, she saw a figure approaching, and her heart skipped a beat when she realized it was Chaewon. She had come to find Yunjin, her eyes filled with a mix of hope and uncertainty. Chaewon hadn't been to the pier since that fateful night, when she had realized that she could no longer ignore her feelings for Yunjin. The sight of her brought a rush of emotions, a cocktail of joy and fear, love and doubt.

As Chaewon approached, Yunjin quickly tucked the notebook away, trying to compose herself. She had so much she wanted to say, so much she needed to explain. But when Chaewon finally reached her, all the words she had rehearsed in her mind escaped her. They simply stared at each other, the silence stretching out between them like the vast ocean before them.

Finally, Chaewon spoke, her voice tentative. "I heard you were here," she said. "I had to come and see you."

Yunjin searched Chaewon's eyes, looking for a hint of the love she had once seen so clearly. "Why?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

Chaewon took a deep breath, her hands fidgeting with the hem of her shirt. "Because I miss you," she admitted. "And I know I hurt you. I just... I didn't know how to deal with everything I was feeling. I pushed you away because I was scared of losing you, of what it would mean if we tried and it didn't work out."

Yunjin's heart ached at the admission. "And now?" she prompted.

"Now," Chaewon said, taking a step closer, "I know that I can't live without you. I've been trying to find myself, to figure out what I want. And all I keep coming back to is you. I want to try, Yunjin. I want to be more than just friends. I want to be your everything."

Yunjin felt a lump form in her throat as she stared into Chaewon's sincere eyes. She knew that she had been so focused on her own pain and confusion that she hadn't stopped to consider the effect she was having on Chaewon. It was clear that Chaewon was hurting too, that she was just as lost and unsure of herself as Yunjin had been.

Tentatively, she reached out and took Chaewon's hand in hers. The touch sent a jolt of electricity through her, making her heart race. "Chaewon," she whispered, her voice barely audible over the sound of the waves lapping against the pier, "I've been writing a new memory for myself. One where we can start over, where we can be together and find happiness. And I want that with you."

Chaewon's lips curled into a shy smile as she leaned in closer, her body pressed against Yunjin's. "Then let's write it together," she said, her voice soft and tender. "Let's write a new future, one where we're not afraid to take a chance on love."

They stood there for a long moment, lost in each other's eyes, their hearts beating in perfect rhythm. As they stood there, surrounded by the vastness of the ocean, they knew that no matter what challenges lay ahead, they would face them together. They were in this together, bound by their love and their commitment to each other.

And as they stood there, holding hands, they began to write a new memory, one of hope and love and the promise of a brighter future. A future where they could finally be truly happy, together.

Yunjin pulled the pier charm from her pocket, feeling its smooth surface under her fingertips. She held it out to Chaewon, her hand trembling slightly. "Do you remember this?" she asked, her voice filled with hope and vulnerability.

Chaewon's eyes widened as she took the charm, the color of the sea glass reminding her of their first kiss under the pier's shadow. "Yeah," she murmured, her voice thick with emotion. "How could I forget?"

Yunjin watched as Chaewon turned the charm over in her hand, the light catching the green tint. "It was the night you gave it to me," she said softly. "The night you said you wanted to be more than friends."

The memory washed over them like a wave, bringing with it the sweetness of their first love and the pain of their eventual separation. Chaewon looked up, her eyes brimming with tears. "I'm sorry," she choked out. "I'm sorry for everything."

Yunjin's heart clenched at the sight of Chaewon's pain. She had been carrying this burden for so long, afraid to let anyone else in, afraid of getting hurt again. But now, as she looked into the eyes of the woman she had loved for so long, she knew she had to take a leap of faith.

"Me too," she whispered. "But maybe it's time we gave ourselves a second chance?"

Chaewon nodded, her eyes never leaving Yunjin's. "I'd like that," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. "I'd like that very much."

They sat down on the bench, the one that had been the witness to their first kiss and their last goodbye. The pier stretched out before them, a symbol of all the moments they had shared and all the moments they had lost. But now, it was also a symbol of the future they could build together.

With trembling hands, Yunjin opened her notebook to a fresh page. "Let's start a new chapter," she said, her voice filled with hope. "A chapter where we don't pretend to be just friends."

Chaewon took the pen from her, her hand steady and sure. She wrote down her phone number and her new address, handing the notebook back to Yunjin with a smile that lit up her eyes. "I'm serious," she said, her voice firm and resolute. "I want to be with you, and I want to try this again. But only if you're really ready for it."

Yunjin looked up from the notebook, her heart swelling with hope. She could feel the warmth of Chaewon's touch, the sincerity of her words. She knew this time was different. "I am," she said softly, reaching out to take Chaewon's hand. "I'm ready for us to be together."

They sat in silence for a moment, lost in their own thoughts, but connected by the strength of their feelings. The waves crashed against the pier, a soothing rhythm that seemed to echo the beating of their hearts. Finally, Yunjin summoned the courage to speak. "I love you, Chaewon," she said, her voice barely audible above the sound of the sea. "I've always loved you."

Chaewon turned to face her, tears streaming down her cheeks. "I love you too, Yunjin," she whispered. "More than anything."

They leaned in towards each other, their lips mere inches apart. The air between them crackled with electricity, the anticipation of what was to come palpable. And then, as if in some perfect harmony, they closed the distance, their lips meeting in a tender, passionate kiss. The pier charm hung around Yunjin's neck, a symbol of their love and their determination to make this new chance at happiness last.

As they kissed, the world seemed to fade away, leaving only the two of them and the endless expanse of the ocean. They were together now, bound not by fate or circumstance, but by the strength of their love and their unwavering commitment to each other. And in that moment, they knew that no matter what challenges they faced, they could face them together.

Yunjin's hands found their way up Chaewon's back, tangling in her hair as she deepened the kiss. Chaewon moaned softly into their embrace, her tongue dancing with Yunjin's. Their lips were soft and supple, their bodies pressed tightly against one another. It felt as if they were made for this, as if their souls were intertwined and destined to find each other again and again, despite all the obstacles in their path.

The pier charm swung gently between them, a testament to the love they shared and the promise they had made to one another. As they kissed, they could feel the warmth of the sun on their skin, the saltiness of the sea in their mouths. Time seemed to stand still, and for a brief moment, it was as if they were the only two people in the world.

Finally, they pulled away, their breaths coming in ragged gasps. Their eyes locked, and in them, Yunjin saw a depth of emotion that she had never before experienced. "I love you, Chaewon," she whispered, her voice barely audible above the sound of the surf. "More than anything."

Chaewon smiled, her eyes shining with unshed tears. "I love you too, Yunjin. Forever and always." She leaned in again, their lips meeting in a tender kiss. As they kissed, the world seemed to spin around them, and for a fleeting moment, it was as if they were the only two people in the world. And in that moment, they knew that they had found their home, their sanctuary, their forever.

I'm sorry if my story feel like it's all over the places. I'm new to writing, please be kind to me.
