Work Text:
Yuki took a quick glance at the time displayed on her phone and hastened her steps. Who would have thought that she'd receive a last minute job request that would lead to her having to pull an all-nighter? As a result, she was now running late—A rare occurrence for someone like her who always tried to be prepared.
She spared no glance to her surroundings and let familiar sights pass by as she reached the school building. Dazed from lack of sufficient sleep, her body functioned on autopilot, and before she knew it, she had already changed her shoes and was running up the stairs. In her hurry, she didn't even have the time to pause and consider the warning bells ringing in her mind as her subconsciousness sensed something odd. She only slowed her pace once her classroom came into sight. Drawing a quick breath, she opened the door, a well-prepared apology already ready in her mind—
But she was welcomed with nothing but the strum of guitar strings.
“R-Ruka…?” Yuki asked, her voice coming out in a squeaky gasp owing to her breathlessness.
The familiar blonde girl turned around and looked up at her. Her distracted expression quickly focused to form an elated smile as she became aware of the identity of the intruder.
“Yukki!” Her face looked like she was close to discarding the guitar on her lap and jumping. But before she could, Yuki dragged a chair and sat opposite Ruka, placing her bag on the floor.
She couldn't speak for a while as she tried to catch her breath. Seeing that, Ruka decided to give her time and grabbed a bottle of water from her own bag and offered it. Yuki hesitated for a moment but eventually accepted, pouring the cold water down her throat as she tried to calm down and regain her usual cool composure.
“It's rare to see Yukki so flustered~”
Yukki frowned at the remark. She knew that Ruka didn't mean it—That as both a friend and now as her lover, Ruka had seen her flustered many times before. She knew that she was just teasing Yuki about her insistence on carrying herself a certain way. But that was precisely why the comment was embarrassing. But she knew that she could not fall for the bait and retort that she was always flustered around Ruka. That would be digging her own grave again.
So instead, Yuki swallowed her protests and asked in a slightly rough voice, “What're you doing here?”
“Huh? Well, I didn't know that classes were canceled today,” Ruka’s tone was carefree. “And since I went through the trouble of getting here, I thought I might as well hang around for a bit.”
She looked down at her guitar and strummed a few strings as she explained. “And I was just getting bored and was thinking about how nice it would have been if a certain someone could have kept me company when the exact same person happened to pass through the door!”
Yuki felt heat rising to her cheeks as she realized what had happened. Noticing her colorful expression, Ruka chuckled.
“But… You didn't tell me that you were gonna attend classes today,” Yuki's tone sounded a little accusatory, almost as if she felt betrayed.
“Sorry, I thought I’d surprise you by making it to school today,” Ruka moved the guitar, making space on her lap, as she apologized. “But you ended up surprising me instead! What’s up? Got some work here?”
“No… I…”
“Yeah?”
“A job suddenly came up last night and I was so caught up on not missing classes again that I forgot that classes were canceled today,” Yuki mumbled out meekly.
“Whaaaat?” Ruka exclaimed in surprise, as if Yuki had just said something unbelievable, before the corners of her mouth twisted into an impish smile. “So even the perfect Yukki makes mistakes like that.”
“I’ve never claimed to be perfect. Aren't you the perfect one?”
“Non, non~ It makes sense for me to make a mistake like this but not for Yukki.”
“What’s with the double standards?”
“There, there. Everyone makes mistakes now and then so it's fine. I won't hate you for it or anything.”
“Why’re you avoiding the question? And it's scary if you were to actually hate me for such an insignificant mistake. Don't instill new fears in me.”
Yuki closed her eyes and sighed. But when she opened them again, a smile was sitting on her girlfriend’s face.
Ruka pulled her chair forward and took Yuki's hands in her own. “Don’t worry. I could never hate you.”
“Stop, you're making me look like an anxious wreck.”
“If you weren't an anxious wreck who had rushed to school, you wouldn't have appeared right when I wanted to see you, right?” Ruka's grin only widened. “So I like that part of you too.”
“Ugh…”
No matter how many times she had heard it before, Yuki’s heart could never calm down at that confession. Her emotions were a whirlwind again, and she gulped and squeezed Ruka's hands. She wanted to convey her love too. So she pulled those hands so that Ruka’s body leaned towards her own, and then she quickly placed a kiss on her left cheek. She let go with the same speed and then draped her hands around Ruka's neck, burying her hot red face on her lover’s shoulder as the embarrassment finally overtook her.
Yuki knew that she wasn't thinking as much as she always did and was giving into her impulses quite a bit today. She blamed it on not having gotten enough sleep. And she had already endured enough humiliation to not be as bothered anymore.
Ruka was surprised for a moment but her own arms moved involuntarily to support Yuki's body and pull her closer.
“You could have gone for the lips…” She whispered near one of Yuki's ears, her voice not concealing encouragement and eagerness.
Yuki was startled by the sweet voice at a close range, but she wrapped her arms tighter, determined not to let go.
“Next time, maybe…” She mumbled back in a shaky voice.
“Mhm,” Ruka hummed in response as she too hugged tighter, letting Yuki rest within her arms as she peppered kisses on the side of her forehead, excitedly waiting for Yuki to lift her face so that she could attack her lips herself.
