Ethan pov
I can't believe this is finally happening. My very first borrowing! I'm so excited! This has been my dream since, well, forever!!
I do know that as a borrower I shouldn't be so excited to go up there, to a literal world of giants, but I can't help it. With every book, story and piece of gossip I hear about the surface world, even though a lot of them talk about how 'dangerous and wild' it is and how you should 'never go out there' I can't help but wonder about the amazing, undiscovered side of it and yearn to explore.
Take for example the sky, and how it can change so drastically from a pitch black ceiling filled with twinkling little dots of far off stars and galaxies to the clear baby blue sky that allows rays of sunlight to shine down and lighten everything in sight. Or nature, so green and colourful and full of life, each plant sending out a different variety of foods and smells for anyone to enjoy.
It was way different from where me and the colony of borrowers I live with live. No plants, no sky, no beautiful, jaw dropping views. Just an underground cavern where the only colours besides dirt brown and black were found in illustrated books, and the only source of light we had came from the borrowed, dimly lit torches (match sticks) sprinkled throughout the underground town. This was why I wanted to leave so bad. It's just too boring and dark down here for me, especially when knowing about all the un-boring, sunny world just above your head. I mean wouldn't you wanna leave?
Of course no one is actually allowed to just up and leave, can't risk possibly exposing our kind. So to satisfy both myself and the colony I chose the next best thing... ✨Borrowing✨
Unlike in the movies, borrowings here occur every couple of months or so, with only the bravest and most capable of the colony going up to gather a load of needed food and lost items that'll last the colony until the next one. This is mainly so there's less of a chance of being caught. Less time out there equals less chances of being seen. Which is by the way pretty much the worst, most horrific thing that can happen to a borrower out there. It was basically a death sentence.
Or so they say.
Our elders have always warned us about the humans and how, even though they may look similar to us, they are basically feral animals, both mindless and heartless creatures who care only about looking for their next meal or unfortunate little toy to play with. And everyone in the colony just believes it, seeing as no one has ever actually seen a living human for themselves to make up their own damn mind. But I think different.
I think beans are more like us then we're lead on to believe. Have you seen the stuff we borrow from them? Pins, pencils, socks, lightbulbs, batteries, sugar, napkins. These things were created by humans, and if they're smart enough to create all that I believe they're smart enough to not want to kill us for no reason other then instinct. No 'mindless monster' can build this kind of stuff. So believing that, I of course didn't have any fear in signing up for the up coming borrowing trip, and it wasn't much of a surprise that I got accepted almost immediately after I did. Nearly everyone in the colony was to scared to volunteer, so they were pretty desperate to accept me when I did. Lucky me I guess.
----------------------
After a few weeks of waiting it was finally time, the day of the borrowing was here.
I woke up excited as ever and happily dressed into my uniform, an all black full body suit completed with black handmade boots and a jacket. Though it wasn't what I'd usually wear I had to admit it looked pretty badass in the mirror. It made me feel like I was a ninja or spy of some sort getting ready for my next mission.
After admiring myself a bit more, I ran to the kitchen and quickly scoffed down a bowl of bland cereal. Then rushed out the door, sprinting non-stop til I reached the edge of town, where the only exit and entrance to the bunker was. There I noticed a huge crowd of borrowers cheering as they surrounded about 10 others in the same uniform as me and walked right up to the crowd hoping to join them. But not seeing any way around I start hesitantly squeezing my way through.
"Sorry, excuse me! Trying to get through! Sorry" I apologize as I push past people, trying to get to the front.
Unfortunately for me it was a real struggle. I didn't have the strength or heart to just cut through everyone. But thankfully someone from the volunteer group noticed me drowning in the crowd and came to my rescue. With a helping hand they reached out for me, stretching their arm. I gladly took hold and started being yanked out of the crowd. Once I squeezed past the last person I was greeted with a weird sounding but friendly voice. "Whew! You alright buddy, saw ya getting squished half to death in there" it said.
I look at the hairy, almost paper pale hand that saved me as it lets go and slowly look up until I'm meet with an equally hairy and pale face, with eyes as blue as the sky, or at least how I imagined it would be. Then, realizing the blue eyed borrower in front of me just asked a question, blurt out a quick reply, "Oh, uh, Yea, I-I'm fine, thanks". He snickers at my nervous response.
"Are ya new?" He asks, tilting his head a little with interest.
"How could you tell?" I reply with a chuckle, nervously scratching the back of my neck.
"I don't remember seeing ya last time. Then again I've only done this twice myself since I've been here"
To that I raise my brows in shock. I've never meet an outsider before. "You're not from here?!"
"Nope, I'm from Ireland" he states proudly.
My eyes open wider and my mouth falls agape with astonishment. I've read about Ireland before, and palpably remember how far away it is from here. But I've never heard of a borrower traveling that far before. Actually I've never heard of a borrower traveling at all before. Most of the maps we had were only copied from human maps. "How did you get here?"
"Well" he begins, voice like a narrator as he goes on with his story. "About a year ago I was on my usual borrowing trip, nothing too out of the ordinary, but being a little reckless that day I accidentally fell into a box. Luckily the human I was borrowing from didn't notice me in there, but before I could get out the human closed the box, leaving me trapped inside". I gasp slightly and lean closer, getting really invested in the story. "I didn't know if the human was still out there so I waited a little, but the box started moving, everything inside crashing and bumping into each other. I was almost crushed so many times. Fortunately I managed ta last the whole 15 hours until finally everything stopped moving. But then I heard shuffling above me and hid in the darkest corner when I noticed the box was being opened. And when the light came in right above me, for a few seconds I saw two giant hazel brown eyes."
"A human" I gasped
"Yep, a human" he confirmed. "Luckily though he didn't seem to notice me and I managed to escape. Then found this place a couple days later and I've been here ever since".
"Whoa, I can't believe you actually saw a human. Are they as big as they say?"
"Bigger" he replies simply with widen eyes, and my mind goes wild trying to imagine exactly how big.
Before either of us can say another word a whistle blows, signalling that it's time to go. Both of us bend down to each grab a bag and head off, trailing behind everyone else as we take our first steps into the tunnel. The crowd cheering louder in praise.
As we walk through, the blue eyed borrower turns to me suddenly and extends a hand. "I'm Sean by the way" he mentions, smiling. I extend my own hand and shake his, "Ethan".
---------------------
It took three long, exhausting hours of walking almost vertically and hauling equipment to finally reach the end of the tunnel, and feeling as dog-tired as we were we all collectively decided to take a well earned break, many of us huffing dramatically as we drop to the floor to relax.
Me and Sean sit together, sweating non-stop from the long walk and start conversing about what was just outside, sounding as excited as little kids on Christmas. Everyone kept giving us weird looks, not understanding why we were so peppy before going into human territory. But we just ignored them, only focusing on the wonders we'd hoped to find.
After a bit it was time to go out. Sean was the first to stand up and pulled me off my feet, excited to finally show me the outside world since he'd already seen it. Together we both trot to the rest of the group, grabbing our bags as everyone else did the same and gathered. Then we were off! Finally!
We followed each other out in a straight line, and when I took my first steps out I was immediately mesmorized by the unbelievably tall, emerald green grass and flowers surrounding us. So much different varieties of colours, I couldn't help but gawk over it all. I've never seen so much colour in one place before!! And the smell, oh the smell. I don't know how to describe it, it was just, fresh. I didn't hesitate to breath it all in, finding it way better then the usual dirt and mud smell back at home.
Looking up I was mesmoriszed yet again, this time by the mostly blue and purple evening sky above me. It was so beautiful. Possibly the most beautiful thing I've ever seen. Especially when I noticed those tiny twinkling lights starting to appear in the quickly darkening atmosphere. I've always wanted to see them, having read many illustrated books. But I never could've imagined it being this breathtaking, and now that lm looking at it I couldn't help but tear up. It was better then I ever could have imagined it to be.
"Heh, like the colour blue?" I heard Sean chuckling beside me, giddily watching me as I stared upward, still shedding a few tears.
"Sorry, it's just soooo beautiful. I've never seen the sky before" I awed, whipping my tears away as I look over at a proudly smiling Sean.
"C'mon, we need to start moving. Were trailing behind", Sean pointed out before following the rest of the already far ahead group, frantically motioning for me to hurry along as he walked backwards, facing me. Coming to my senses I quickly jog after Sean and together we catch up to the group, fishing through the grass that was as tall as us.
After a bit, as the sky was turning to an even darker shade of blue I take notice of a massive box shaped building ahead of us and immediately realize it as part of the humans home we were going to be borrowing from. I start hoping, flailing my hands with excitement as we get closer and eventually make it past the grass fields to a sea of concrete. The patio. Just beyond it, only a few feet away was a giant wall of red bricks.
When we finally reach the wall we walk, one by one through a crack in it just big enough for us and our equipment to fit through. Inside it was almost completely black, but thanks to the torches we brought along with us and the moonlight shining through some of the windows we could see just enough of the house.
I couldn't help but gasp at the sight of the room. It was huge! 100 times bigger then any building we could ever make. In fact it was big enough for our whole town to fit in with room to spare. I can't even imagine how big the human that lives here must be.
However I didn't even get much of a chance to as the borrower proclaiming himself to be the 'leader' of the group quietly called out a certain task for everyone one to do. Most people were assigned to look in the kitchen and bathrooms, where the most useful items were usually found like utensils, food, medicine, while the less experienced borrowers, meaning me and Sean were sent to explore the living room, since it was presumably the room least used by the human and therefore the safest.
Even though there wasn't much we could borrow from the living room, besides spare batteries, thread or food crumbs I was still enthused to venture within the world of a human. With a skip in my steps I made our way to the living room of the house, taking almost 10 minutes to walk across a single room that'd probably take a human 10 seconds to do, and come to a halt when the ground suddenly feels softer under my feet.
"You ok?" I hear Sean whisper beside me.
"Huh? Yeah, I was just... The floor changed" I whisper back, looking down.
"Heh, yeah it's carpet. Humans use it to make the floor fluffy, more comfortable"
"Carpet" I echo in awe.
Slowly I start walking forward, enjoying the almost squishy floor feeling beneath my shoes, until we make it to the centre of the room, between a giant coffee table and an unbelievably huge couch. There we attempt to scope out the area for anything useful. However it's so dark we couldn't see anything besides the giant silhouettes of the furniture surrounding us.
"I can't see anything" I whine as I squint my eyes, very faintly seeing Sean.
"Me neither...Oh wait! how the fuck could I forget I had this" reaching in his bag Sean pulls out a torch and quickly lits it up, flicking it against the fabric of the bag on his back. "There we go, now we can see... Sorta"
Although we had the torch we still couldn't see more then 10 feet around ourselves. These torches suck! A little annoyed I sigh and look up, my arms hanging lazily behind me, but marvel over the height of the ceiling above me. It's so far away. It almost looked as far away as the stars did.
I reach my hand out towards the ceiling, knowing full well that I'd never reach it and slowly let my gaze travel downward until my eyes catch the silhouette of the couch. An idea pops in my head.
"Think we'd get a better view from up there?" I whisper and point at the top of the couch.
Sean suspiciously looks at where my finger is pointing and shudders. "I think so but... That's so... High"
Too fixated on the idea to notice Sean's obvious fear, I grab his free hand and run to the base of the couch. Then pull out two hooks made of sharpened metal and start climbing up the armrest, stabbing the hooks into the fabric. Half way up I notice Sean still on the ground and call out to him.
"Sean!? Come up, I can already see better from here"
Sean fidgets for a bit, his brows knitted as he felt unease, then hesitantly he jogs up to the couch, grabbing his own pair of hooks and starts climbing. Satisfied I continue up the armrest and after a few minutes I'm at the very top. With a huff I pull myself up, pack my hooks away and look out at the living room. Even though it was pretty dark I could still notice the incredible size of everything, from the mountain tall table to the TV as big as an entire field. It was Amazing.
With wide eyes I slowly look around the place, gawking over it all until I spot Sean still making his way up. In the dim light of his torch I notice his shaky, hesitant movements as he clambers up. I became afraid he might fall. Once he was within reach I kneel down and gently pull him the rest of the way up, helping him get to his feet.
"You ok?" I ask, concerned. He stares sharply for a moment, huffing in both anger and fear.
"...No, I'm not ok. We're so high up off the ground, and I'm deathly afraid of heights" He frantically shouts, though his voice as quiet as a whisper.
"Sorry" I quickly respond, backing up with my hand infront of me as he steps away from the edge.
He then sighs, calming himself down with his hand over his chest. "No, no I'm sorry. I came up here ta face my fear, but clearly I'm still...Very much afraid"
"It's ok... Since we're already up here, how about we look around, hm?"
Slowly Sean nods in agreement and together we begin to scan the room, looking for anything of use. I glance up and down the rest of the couch and catch a glimpse of something reflecting Sean's light on one of the couch cushions. What was that? Intrigued, I slide down the armrest and start making my way to the mysterious, shinning object, the darkness making it almost impossible to see what was around me.
"Hey! What are ya doin? Don't leave me up here" I hear Sean shout from the top of the armrest.
I turn to look up at him, his worried face slightly illuminated by the torch attached to his backpack. "I thought I saw something! I'm just checking it out, I'll be back" I assure him and continue walking along the cushions.
After a few seconds I hear Sean suddenly call my name, but his voice was whimpering and almost too quiet to hear. Almost like he didn't want someone else to know he was there. He sounded afraid. I turn to face him, worried that there may be something wrong, and just in time notice his horror filled expression before his torch was blown out. All I could see now was his silhouette, shivering in the dark. I stepped back in fear, not knowing what could've possibly made him so scared, but ended up tripping over and falling on my butt, landing on an unexpectedly flat and hard surface. Which was very strange. The cushions before now always felt soft and bouncy. But what was even weirder was as soon as I fell the surface beneath me lit up, brighter than any light I've ever seen and for a few seconds I could see Sean's expression. He still had that horrified look on his face, but he wasn't starring at me anymore, he was looking at something beside me.
I swallowed a thick lump in my throat before looking to my right, where Sean was looking, and lost my breath as I came face to face with a real live human, giant brown, almond shaped eyes as wide as my own starring straight at me, piercing with shock and awe. All I could do was blink as we starred at each other. I felt frozen by his gaze. And holy shit he was huge! More then huge, he was gigantic!
How did I not notice such a human laying down right next to me!? Was I blind!?!
Before I knew it the light went out and I was left in complete darkness, the behemoth's face disappearing from my view. It shook me to the bone knowing it was still there.
Understandably I wanted to get up and run as far away from here as possible, but my stupid legs wouldn't move, no matter how much I begged them to. I was stuck, still frozen in fear. But it only got worse from there.
After a few unnerving seconds of silence I heard fabric suddenly shifting all around me, making me shudder. It was terrifying not being able to see what was happening, however my legs still wouldn't move. Then I heard a tap really close behind me, even felt the ground shake a little, and the light that glowed from before was turned back on. As soon as I could see again I heard more fabric shift and quickly turned my head around to spot an absolutely massive hand, big enough to crush a person slowly moving away and lay down on the ground behind me.
I didn't want to believe it, it was impossible for a hand to be so big, yet I was looking right at it. I couldn't have been any taller than one of it's fingers. Oh gosh!
"You're real". A sudden deep and tired voice awed, making my insides vibrate as a gush of warm air ruffled my hair. Immediately I looked towards the voice and shuddered seeing the humans face, once again illuminated by the unusual light source beneath me.
Mark's pov
Today was such a busy day, in fact this whole month was busy. With all the meeting new people, worrying about Covid, shooting and editing videos and doing it all in such a hurry I end up exhausting myself. I've also been forgetting about groceries too, alway having to push it to the next day because of the exhaustion or just being plain lazy. However today that just couldn't happen. I was running out of food and I couldn't let myself or more importantly Amy and Chica go hungry. So I went out midday, after filming, breakfast and a quick work out to the shopping centre and bought a week's worth of groceries.
By the time I was finished it was 9 pm and still had to haul a car load of stuff into the house. When I was finally done cleaning and packing everything to its rightful place I decided to lay down, not even bothering to make it to my own bed and crashed onto the couch, my stomach and face smooshed against the cushions. Then I pulled out my phone and mindlessly scrolled through a few social media apps, just seeing what the people were up to these days until eventually I fell asleep on the couch, phone beside my face.
I was woken up some time later by the sound of soft whispers. I knew it was still night at the time by how dark the house was. I couldn't see a thing when I opened my eyes. So I just closed my eyes again, wanting to go back to sleep. Until I thought of what I was hearing....Voices.
Was there someone in my house? It didn't sound like Amy, it sounded more like a man's voice, possibly even two men. Was this a break in? Were we getting robbed?
I forced myself to stay in place, feigning sleep and listen very closely to the 'intruders' conversation.
"Hey, what are ya doin? Don't leave me up here" a panicked and Irish accented voice whispers.
"I thought I saw something, I'm just checking it out, I'll be back" another, more American sounding voice whispers back.
From the variety of voices I heard, there were at least two people in the house. But they sounded weird, like they were really far away even though their voices were clear. It seemed they were really determined to stay undetected with how softly they spoke. I wonder what they're doing here?
Still unsure of their intention I keep quiet and listen, determined to find out more. But it seemed from the lack of noise they had gone quiet too.
Did... Did they notice I was awake?...
"Ethan" I suddenly hear the Irish fella whimper, sounding incredibly scared. Then silence.
Why did he sound scared? Is Ethan one of their names? Why are they being so damn quite!?
Curiously I open my eyes and peek around the dark room, making sure not to move at all so I don't accidentally alert the intruders. It was way to dark to actually see anything, but coincidentally at that moment my phone, that was infront of my face on the couch turns on and lights up the room, allowing me to see something very strange that was laying ontop of it. With wide eyes I focus in on it and basically stop breathing when I realize, it's a little, tiny person.
Though it was still pretty dark and I couldn't exactly see his face I could tell he was there. He was sitting on my phone, his hands behind him like he'd just fallen over, and he was, from what I could tell only 3 inches in height, about as tall as my finger. So small.
I was obviously stunned to say the least and ended up just staring at him until the light of my phone faded away, which was only like 10 seconds, though it felt much longer. Yet even though I saw it I still couldn't believe it.
Was it just my imagination? Was I seeing things?
To make sure it wasn't just my tired mind playing tricks on me again I slowly and carefully reach my hand out and tap my phone so it lights up. And lo and behold the tiny guy was still there.
"You're real"
Ethan's pov
We starred at each other, unmoving until the light faded away. That's when I finally had enough and took off running to the armrest.
You'll never take me alive, human!
When I made it across I instantly try climbing up, but I remembered like an idiot I had left my bag up there and it was almost impossible to climb up without any equipment. Either way I was desperate and still tried getting up, jumping, clawing, grabbing onto any lose fabric I could find but it was futile. Nothing worked, and with each failed attempt I grew more and more afraid, tears threatening to pour down my cheeks.
In the midst of my panic I heard fabric shift and springs squeak around me. The human was moving. With slow movements I turn around and press myself into the wall behind me as I notice the giant silhouette of the human, now sitting up and towering over me. It was so incredibly terrifying, especially since I couldn't see any of the details in his face. I couldn't tell whether he was angry, grinning like a maniac or barring his teeth with a hungry stare.
I know I said I didn't believe those stories of humans being nothing but monsters and killers but it was pretty difficult not to in this situation. I just hope for the sake of mine and everyone's elses lives they weren't true. Oh please don't let them be true.
All of a sudden a blinding light shines down. I cover my eyes with my arms and keep as still as possible, to scared to move at all. There was a long pause as I waited for something horrible to happen. But strangely enough nothing did.
Rather awkwardly I unravel my arms and squint while looking towards the light, trying to see the human again, but I couldn't see anything past it, only dark.
Then without warning I notice a giant hand appearing through the darkness, steadily coming closer to me. I press myself back even further into the cushioned wall and cringe, fearing the worse. My eyes grow wide as his it's finger reach out to grab. Just as it was about to touch me I flinch, wrap my arms around my head again and anxiously wait as my mind floods with terrifying images of what the human might do. But then again... nothing happens.
Curiously I peek through my shaky arms, and grow confused when I come face to face with the tip of a giant finger.
What?... what is it doing?!
Slowly I lower my arms and stare dumbfounded at the giant outstretched finger, confused as all heck. Then look up at where I think the humans face is, but don't get any obvious answer from him. Instead the finger infront of me wiggles slightly. I stare at it, head tilted for a few silent seconds until I have an idea of what he may want from me.
A handshake?
With great caution I look back and forth between the giants finger and face and slowly lift both my arms and place my hands on either side of his finger. Then with a nervous smile I carefully move it up and down. As I do I hear the human chuckles warmly and with a soft yet booming voice says, "hello"
My eyebrows rise in surprise at such a friendly gesture from the human and as to not be rude I smile back whilst still shaking his finger.
It was a very odd experience to say the least. I could feel every little detail on his finger, the ridges, the lines, the bumps. It was like holding a bundle of rope or a tree branch except a little more soft, squishy and warm. Plus attached to a whole frickin giant.
Quite suddenly the hand pulls away, making me stumble forward, and the light fades. When I look up again my breath quickens, afraid as I notice the towering figure of the human grow even bigger as he stands, making the springs squeak under his moving weight. Then before I could even notice his figure moving away I heard and felt the booming sounds and thuds of his steps, gradually fading as he walks to one of the rooms walls. When he makes it to the other side I hear a click and the whole room suddenly lights up, allowing me to clearly see the human standing on the other side.
He turns around and looks at me, a friendly yet curious smile on his face. I couldn't help but feel intimidated by his gigantic size, and I especially couldn't help stumbling back when he started walking towards me again. Each step he took he'd grow bigger and shake the ground more and more until finally he stopped walking. Unfortunately he had stopped right infront of me, or more accurately over me, his shadow completely engulfing my tiny form, and what was worse I wasn't even on the ground yet and he was still one of the tallest things I had ever seen.
Thankfully he crouches down, making me feel a little less panicky, and smiles. "There we go, I can actually see you now" he chuckles.
As we stare at each other, admiring one another's size I noticed there was no malice or hanger in his eyes. Only genuine wonder and awe. Was I right about the humans?
After a bit of silence the human leans closer and casually rests his chin on his arms, which I now notice are riddled with muscles. Then with a voice as quiet as a whisper he asks "what's your name little guy?"
I open my mouth, wanting to answer but the only thing that comes out are whimpers and squeaks, like my voice was stuck in my throat. I look down momentarily, feeling a bit embarrassed. Then look back up at the human, expecting him to be angry or frustrated I didn't answer his questions. But instead I find him tilting his head and smiling at me with the most adoring eyes.
"Awww" he cooes, tilting his head a little more. "It's ok, take your time. I can wait"
Of course not wanting to keep a human waiting, I take a deep breath and think of calming thoughts to ease myself. Once I've relaxed enough I look towards the human again, his smile widens with encouragement, and I muster up enough confidence to say "m-my names Ethan".
Immediately his face lights up in a way that says 'I'm so proud of you', and introduces himself as well. "Nice to meet you Ethan, I'm Mark" he says, slightly nodding his head. I smile and wave shyly in response, immediately moving my hands to my sides right after.
I notice Mark's expression gradually changing to one of concentration. I take a cautious step back and knit my brows, unsure of what he was thinking about.
"Question, are you the same tiny person I saw in my mail a couple months ago?" He asks, lifting a pointing finger in the air.
I instantly go silent, unsure of how to reply. I'm certain the borrower he was talking about was Sean, wasn't it? What am I meant to say here? Do I lie to him? I can't say no, otherwise he'll know there's more of us, but if he finds out I straight up lied to him who knows what he'll do to me.
"Y-yep... that-that was me, definitely", I said, opting to cover up the truth.
"Really?...". However it seemed Mark was already catching onto my lie as he had a suspicious look on his face. "You seem unsure"
"Uh-uh, i-i'm sure... Really" I stutter
Still the human looks unconvinced by my answer and I quickly become scared again. He must know I'm lying, what do I do, is he mad?
I start barreling in thoughts, full of fear and regret when suddenly I hear someone screaming. My fear quickly turns to confusion as it continues, unsure of who it's coming from. It certainly wasn't Mark as he looked around as confused as I was. Plus it was faint, like the person screaming was far away.
"Ow! What the fuck?" Mark abruptly shouts looking down at his feet, confused and angry at the same time.
Then unexpectedly I hear another, very familiar voice shout from below. "L-leave em the fuck alone, you-you m-monster!".
At first Mark's expression conveyed anger as he searched the ground, but when he heard and saw the borrower who shouted at him his face lit up in excitement.
Hey now, no need for that, I'm not gonna hurt anyone little guy" Mark says softly. I then see one of his hands move out of sight, reaching down with extreme care. "Here, let me just-"
"H-hey! What are ya- Don't ya dare touch me!" I hear the very Irish borrower call out. "Ahh! No! Let me go!"
I see Mark slowly raise his hand, which was closed in a fist, and in that fist, struggling and shouting all sorts of profanities was Sean. I couldn't believe how tiny he looked.
"Alright, alright, it's ok" Mark assured as he opened his hand and dumped Sean out onto the couch, next to me. "There you go"
Sean's Pov
How could I have done that? I just left him there, all by himself. I'm such a piece of shit!
My mind wouldn't stop battering me, filling with non stop curses of guilt and anger. And I deserved every little bit of it. I just left Ethan all alone with a human and no way to defend himself. Just to save my own ass.
Like a scared little boy, I've hidden myself underneath the couch and helplessly listened to Ethan and the humans surprisingly 'normal' conversation. At least as normal as it would be to talk to someone 100 feet taller than you. But I could just faintly hear the shudder in Ethan's voice. He was terrified, and rightfully so.
From where I was I could only see up to the humans ankles and even that was making my heart race. I couldn't imagine what it was like to see the rest, and for the human to see you too.
Suddenly I hear the human, Mark as he so calls himself, ask Ethan a question that sends a new wave of guilt and regret through me. "Question, are you the same tiny person I saw in my mail a couple months ago?".
Ethan went completely silent, unsure of how to answer, and I cringed. I told Ethan I arrived here in the humans mail, I had no idea he actually saw me. However that wasn't why I cringed. I made a huge mistake before I escaped. I stole some of the humans things while I was in that box, a few pieces of package papers and fabric to be precise, and now he probably thinks Ethan did it. What if he wants revenge!? He's gonna die!!!!! Unless, he plays it smart and says it wasn't him.
Suddenly I heard Ethan's voice pipe up, "y-yep, that-that was me, definitely". I Instantly start to panic, even having to bite down on my own fist just to keep myself from screaming.
Why would he tell him that?! Is he trying to get himself killed!? oh, who am I kidding this is MY fault!! I have to do something! Quick!
Even though I hadn't known this guy for very long I knew I couldn't just let him take the blame for something I did. So as quickly as possible, mainly so I don't wimp out, I take out a pin from my bag and charge full speed at the human's foot, screaming the whole way. With all my strength I jab the pin into the human's big toe and jump back when the human screams out in pain and looks down, malice written all over his face.
Fueled with adrenaline I step forward and out from beneath the couch and shout up at the human in a demanding tone. "Leave em the fuck alone, you monster!".
However as soon as the human spots me and smiles like he wasn't afraid or intimidated at all by my attack I lost all my confidence and immediately became frightened again, now noticing just how big and muscular this human really was. Slowly I tried backing away as the human looked between me and the pin stuck in his foot.
"Hey now, no need for that, I'm not gonna hurt anyone little guy" he said, picking out and tossing aside the pin. Now his free hand was creeping towards, me!
"H-hey! What are ya- Don't ya dare touch me!" I cried out, pointing a warning finger to try and scare the hand away, but it obviously wasn't working as it kept getting closer. Finally I tried stepping back to try and get away but his hand moved quickly to block my escape and created a wall of flesh behind me. I was trapped.
With nothing else to do I looked up at the human, his crouching figure still towering over me like an entire mountain. So fucking huge. And his eyes. The same ones I saw peering into the box were full of, curiosity.
As I starred at his face I felt fingers as tall as me tenderly wrap around my waist, rendering me helpless. Instantly I shout and struggle in his hold, punching, pushing, even biting at his fingers but it was futile. I was effortlessly lifted off the ground against my will, vertigo hitting hard, and my phobia of heights certainly didn't make things any better. I tried not to look down at the long drop but even knowing I was being lifted higher made me feel sick to the stomach. Then without warning the hand holding me opens up and tips over, making me tumble onto the couch cushions with a thud.
Ethan's pov
I approached Sean as he attempted to get up, noticing him to focused on Mark to even notice me there beside him. Carefully I sneak up behind and whisper in his ear. "Hey Sean"
Immediately he yelped and turned around, scared. But once he noticed it was just me he seemed more relieved.
"Ethan!" He cried out, pulling me into a tight, unexpected hug. "Yer alright! I'm so sorry I left ya"
Awkwardly I return the hug, patting him on the back. "heh hey, no need to say sorry", I offer.
While hugging each other, my eyes travel up to Mark and notice with a gasp he's looking down at us, smiling.
"Um... S-sean", I whisper. Slowly Sean loosens his grip and looks at me. "Mark... He's looking at us"
I feel Sean stiffen, and although he was very obviously scared of Mark he moves his arms to his sides and slowly turns around to face him, gulping hard. "S-so he is"
Mark, looking directly at Sean raises his hand and gives a small wave. "Hello"
"Uh... h-h-hi", Sean manages to say, waving his own shaky hand.
